Bogut is a player who the scouts have had a love/hate relationship and who has been a bit of a moving target in terms of projection. He has made some major changes in his game and his body in just three years between coming over from Australia and then his two years as a collegian at Utah. Coming out as a prospect, he was originally pegged as a player to watch as he had the prototypical 7 footer body and tremendous strength already for a young man. But then he showed up at Utah a little too big and it hindered his mobility and athleticism. After a year of conditioning, he showed back up still strong as an ox but having shed some extra pounds and bringing back a bit more mobility and explosiveness. He has long arms and big, strong hands.
He was an interesting case study at Utah because he (like many foreign players) is very fundamentally sound as a player compared to other players his age and they let him explore quite a few facets of his game. He has great post footwork and uses his strength to score on the block. He'll need to develop more post moves to continue to be as successful at the next level, but he definitely has the ability. He has very sound shot mechanics (although he's still frustratingly inconsistent from the free throw line) and he even showed the ability to step out and hit some 3s although he shouldn't be asked to do that much as a professional. He's very much more a screen and roll and high-post type big on offense. His handle is good enough that he shouldn't be a liability in creating turnovers and he passes well when double teamed or when he gets into sudden trouble.
Bogut will be a sound low-post defender at the next level and will be able to use his size and length to bother some shots. While he won't be much of a helpside shot-blocking threat we do expect that he will cause problems for anyone shooting within a few feet of him and certainly will pose a problem for his assignment. He also uses his size and strength well to play the boards and should be an asset to whoever drafts him there.
