Hawes comes to TMBSL after one year as a collegian following a highly-regarded prep career. Hawes brings to the table prototypical size but underwhelming athleticism. While he has the prototype length, height, and build for an NBA center, he is a bit plodding and could stand to run the floor better. However, he is technically very advanced for his age. Despite his lack of quickness, he has tremendous footwork in the post and a soft touch for finishing. He has an array of moves he can use to score, far more diverse and creative than any other big prospect in this draft. He has a smooth jump shot and is an excellent free throw shooter for his size, he may have the ability to expand his range to the three point line at the next level. He moves the ball intelligently and handles the ball well enough to avoid turnovers in those situations where he is double-teamed. Despite lacking verticality and still needing to add strength he attacked the offensive boards well in college.
Hawes may struggle on the defensive end at first in TMBSL. His athleticism will prevent him from being a high level defender, although he showed the ability to time well enough that he wasn't a completely lost cause as a shot-blocker. He needs to continue to add strength so that he isn't bullied as a post defender and work on his footwork and positioning so that he isn't exploited by more athletic opponents. Despite his ability to crash the offensive glass, he often sacrificed his own numbers on the defensive glass to box out and create opportunities for his teammates to crash the boards. Additionally, he struggles to get to rebounds once he's out of position because of his lack of lateral quickness. While Hawes is 19 years old and one of the younger players in this class, some scouts wonder how much of his potential he's maxed out since he is fairly technically proficient and many of his flaws relate directly to his athleticism rather than skillset.
