Welcome back. Days 21-30 of the season were highlighted by some monster performances by some of the league's best players so let's get right into it. Hank Gathers (1) won Week 5 player of the week after putting up 41.8 pts/36 and only 1.4 to/36 during Sim 3 on an impressive 1.232 points per true shot attempt. Gathers' play was good for a 37.2 PER. However, Gathers was slightly outdone by Week 6 player of the week Ralph Sampson (2) whose 38.0 PER was tops among qualifiers in Sim 3. Sampson averaged 37.3 pts/36, 13.4 rebs/36, and 2 stls/36 during the sim. His 37 points per 36 came with ridiculous efficiency as he averaged 1.439 points per true shot attempt. Both players' teams rode them to winning sims as the Washington Bullets went 7-1 in the sim, dropping their final game to the Charlotte Bobcats, and the Blazers went 4-3.
Speaking of the Bobcats, they end Sim 3 in possession of the TMBSL belt after beating the Vancouver Grizzlies (3) on Day 25. The Grizzlies had held onto the belt for 9 days after it changed hands four times in a six day span earlier. This is the Bobcats second time holding the belt in 3001, they hope to make this one last longer. The Bobs first chance to defend the belt in sim 4 comes on day 32 against the Carolina Cougars, who after a 5-2 sim, currently sit as the 5 seed out East with a 16-6 overall record. Free agency addition Lloyd Sharrar (4) had a monster sim 3 for the Cougars, putting up 36.1 pts/36 and 14.9 rebs/36 during the 10 day span. Sharrar is now 2nd in TMBSL in rebounds per game with 12.8, trailing only Kyle Hines (5) who is pulling down 14.2 per game. Hines and the Clippers have been on fire after a slow 5-4 start to the season winning 14 of their last 15 games.
There was a little controversy in TMBSL land as a few general managers brought up the idea that this year's class of rookies are performing too well and bringing an unfair dynamic to the league. While it is hard to say for sure if the rookie class is "OP", there is no doubt that guys like Sampson, Dale Ellis (6), and Antoine Carr (7) have taken the league by storm. Carr and Ellis form a rookie duo for the upstart Philadelphia 76ers who are sitting at a surprising 20-5 record, currently the best in the Northeast division. One rookie who was cited as performing at an appropriate level for a newcomer was Sidney Green (8), the young PF of the Sacramento Kings. Green unfortunately went down with a broken skull in sim 3 and will miss 46 more days of the season. A tough break for the Kings who were trying to see what they had in the young player this season.
The toughest injury break of all so far this season came when Bob Kurland (9) broke his arm last sim. Kurland is still expected to miss 44 more days before returning to the lineup. The Dallas Mavericks have gone 12-4 in his absence, which at first glance seems pretty solid. However, in Sim 3 they were only 4-3 which lead to some grumbling amongst fans of the defending champs. The Mavericks have been shopping Aaron Craft (10) on the trade block, reportedly generating interest from multiple teams.
Multiple trades were completed after Sim 3 with the Indiana Pacers sending Guy Pnini (11) and cash considerations to the Warriors for Branko Lazic (12). Lazic was a solid role player for the Pacers last season and they are excited to bring him back into the fold. Drew Neitzel (13) of the Bullets was traded to the Cougars for a group of players highlighted by Ed Croswell (14) and cash considerations. The move allows the Bullets to carry 21.6 million dollars in cap space into next offseason where they can hopefully add a third star to their duo of Gathers and William Buford (15). For the Cougars, Neitzel will split time at PG with Marques Haynes (16) this season while likely being groomed to become their PG of the future.
Win Shares were released following the end of day 30 and Sergei Belov (17) of the Raptors sat atop the list. Belov lead all PGs with 8.3 win shares thus far, while rookie Clyde Drexler (18) topped all SGs with 6.2. Drexler isn't the only rookie with an early lead at his position, as Antoine Carr leads PFs with 7.9 win shares. Wayne Estes (19) is leading the way at SF with 8.2 while Bojan Dubljevic (20) sets the pace for centers with 7.0 win shares. Bojan's Knicks are the only team not in the playoffs amongst the win share leaders at each position, and frankly, the Knicks aren't even close at this point. Rumors are swirling that Bojan is begging management for some help on the court, but thus far, management is preaching patience to the youngster, pleading with their star to trust the process.
