back when the mavs traded for Kyrie i remember him being called a superstar which is always a can of worms (which is probably the point) but what stood out to me was that his all-nba credentials (two 3rd one 2nd zero 1st) are worse than DeMar DeRozan's (one 3rd two 2nd zero 1st), and i saw DeMar trending on the internet website application twitter today so i took a look at his stats and he's at 59 TS% the past four years, which is a really good number for a guy who famously Does Not Take Threes ™️, and he's putting up really high volume too so i got curious where he stood over those past four years among all nba players, and it turns out the total points list looks like this...
Luka Doncic
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Jayson Tatum
Trae Young
Nikola Jokic
DeMar DeRozan
Devin Booker
Joel Embiid
Donovan Mitchell
...and what really stood out to me is that aside from Giannis/Jokic/Embiid (it's nice being seven feet tall i guess), DeMar is #1 in scoring efficiency in that group... AND has more assists than Tatum, Booker, and Mitchell!
so now i'm really curious, so i dug a little deeper and no, it's not an "AcTuALLy MidRaNgE is GOOD" thing because DeMar isn't even the best midrange shooter of these little guys, that's Booker, and just like everyone else every single midrange shot is worse than his overall efficiency. no, what's driving DeMar's efficiency is he's better at drawing fouls (.42 ftr compared to the rest of the group's .34) and like everyone in the group but Luka he's really good at converting (87 FT%), and he's a little better at getting to the rim (20% of his attempts compared to the rest of the group's 18%) and finishing when he gets there (70% vs. 68%). dropping those two to group averages would drop his efficiency from 59% to 57%, still a good number but he'd be #6 instead of #1
but we also know that the threat of three point shooting helps space the floor, giving the rest of the team more room and improving team efficiency. do we see that in the on/off numbers? ...kind of! the average offensive on/off of the other five guys is +7 and DeMar's is only +5, but there's a wiiiiiide range from Donovan's +3 up to Booker's and Trae's +10. while not exactly relevant also notable is that every one but Tatum is a poor defender, making their teams 4 or 5 points worse on defense (Tatum makes his 2 points better). the closest comp ends up being Luka at +6, which makes sense since Luka is a below average three point shooter over this span at 34%, so even though that's clearly better than DeMar's 31%, it's not enough to overcome Luka being a less efficient scorer on his own... maybe? because Kyrie is slightly more efficient individually and dramatically better from three at 40% and he's only a +6 on offense too
i don't know :D i just thought it was really interesting how well DeMar stacks up statistically compared to players that i think most people would have well ahead of him, both in terms of pure scoring efficiency and overall
