The 3001 TMBSL season began with much fanfare and the first few weeks of the season did not disappoint. The biggest stories are the defending champion Dallas Mavericks off to an undefeated start, but two surprise teams lead by their star rookies are not far behind. The Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trailblazers are off to roaring 7-1 and 6-1 starts, respectively. Both squads had high draft picks in the 3001 rookie draft and their selections are paying early dividends. Interesting note: both teams' only loss is against the Carolina Cougars, who are off to a 5-2 start after a busy offseason adding FA C Lloyd Sharrar and rookie C Steve Stipanovich.
The Sixers trio of Dale Ellis, Antoine Carr, and Manute Bol are on fire early in the season and have fans in Philly starting to move their timelines up a little for this young bunch. Many are wondering if they will be able to maintain this level of play all season or if the rookies will hit a wall at some point. Either way, there appears to be a bright future ahead in the city of brotherly love.
Out west, the Portland Trailblazers, lead by 2nd overall pick Ralph Sampson, are 6-1 and looking to silence the critics. Portland was questioned by some for selecting Sampson, who enters the league as a polished big man, at number two overall ahead of guys like Ellis, Carr, and Sidney Green. After two weeks, the Blazers are looking pretty wise as Sampson may be the early favorite for Rookie of the Year. However, it looks like it was hard to go wrong with a pick in the top five in the last draft.
There were no major injuries in the first two weeks, with the longest remaining injuries being Sidney Green, Jim Lampley, and Drazen Dalipagic all out for six more days. Dalipagic and the Los Angeles Clippers came stumbling out of the blocks to a 5-4 start, but no one is worried yet. The peripherals still show a team that should contend for the Western Conference crown this year.
