A lot was written before final grades were posted, tweaked it once they were released today. Enjoy.
1) Manu Ginobili SG 6'6'' 205 22 B+ C+ B+ B, C, A
He may be the juiciest prospect in this draft. His high inside -- a low growth grade for SG -- makes him enticing for GMs. We don’t have any insight about his jumping but I’d venture to guess it’s relatively low. With points pumped into his jumpshot and some expected TC growth in outside he could become a scoring monster. Or, he could be Michael Jordan. His B defense may allude to above average steals but he ranks 13th among the college stats. His profile talks about above average blocks but he ranked 4th to last among college players. I would venture to guess his defense points are in perimeter defense and drive defense. Similar to Terry he would be much more valuable if he could play PG. His TO’s are about average.
2)Frederic Weis C 7'2'' 250 21 B, C- C, B, B- A
Very intriguing grades with great size. With A potential and a very good TC he could turn into an allstar. He may also peter out and become mediocre. Worth a scout to see his shot blocking and has decent rebounding so a GM shouldn’t have to spend too many points on that upgrade. Surprised to see such an unknown name with tremendous grades.
3)Elton Brand PF 6'8'' 260 20 B, C- C, B- C+ B
Should be an efficient scoring big. He is at or near the top of every efficiency category in college. His blocking numbers are average which is higher than expected and he won’t turn the ball over. His rebounding will be something the GM who takes him has to but points into. That’s a big downside because ideally one would max out his inside. Decent big without a lot of the pitfalls of the Oklahoma Special trap but nothing that sets him apart. I expect his jumping is quite low but definitely worth the scout to confirm. If he had A potential he could be 1 overall.
4)Shawn Marion SF 6'7'' 210 21 B- C, C, B, B, B
He looks like guy who will fill the stat sheet. His B inside is encouraging without any mention of jumping in his profile. He is a more complete Bobby Jones special (I’m coining this, I don’t want to have to remember how to spell Thybulle) who will get blocks, and rebounds. Whoever takes Marion will have a decision to make. Should they upgrade his jumpshot or 3 point shot and try and turn him into a complete player or should Marion focus on his strengths and pump points into rebounding or strength
5)Jason Terry SG 6'2'' 172 22 C+ B- B, C+ D, A
Wish he was a combo guard that could play PG. Why don’t we bring that back? Terry may have the highest potential to turn into a star but will most likely be a decent scoring guard. It seems very ambiguous what attributes makes a SG shoot a lot. I know it has to do with jumping but there are guys like RJ Hampton or Maurice Ager who have great grades but don’t shoot and then there’s Charlie Bell. Jason Terry will be at the minimum RJ Hampton but only the sim gods know how much he will shoot. His rebounding will always be an issue but not a big deal.
6) Andrei Kirilenko SF 6'9'' 205 19 B- C, B- B+ C, C
Looks to be a Bobby Jones special. Similar to Marion he has a good inside grade with no signs of jumping. What separates Kirilenko is his plus plus blocking. He averaged almost a full block more than anyone else in the college stats. He may be an option to play PF, with his poor rebounding the drafting GM has some choices to make. Focus on SF and being a complete player and upgrade his outside or lean into the Bobby Jones special and upgrade his rebounding.
7) Ron Artest SF 6'7'' 233 20 C+ C, C, A, C, B
He is another Bobby Jones special. He should be a no shoot SF who gets steals, blocks and rebounds. Do we have confirmation they are beneficial players? Regardless he should be a guaranteed contributing player. His TO’s similar to Bobby Jones are a bit high. His decent FT percentage is encouraging for his jumpshot but he gets knicked a bit for average blocks.
8) Jonathan Bender SF 6'10'' 210 19 B- C, C, B- C, A
No profile for the former #5 pick in the draft but definitely profile grades. He has high potential and grades that could turn him into a star. He is a boom or bust player. 75% he is trash, 25% chance he turns into a star. The sim gods could favor the young man and he still has an inch that could be put into him.
9) Venson Hamilton C 6'10'' 255 22 C+ C, C- A- B- C
He is a ready to go no shoot big. Just pump points into his rebounding and he’s a valuable piece. I always think these guys are underrated. It seems folks value potential or Oklahoma Specials over a guaranteed shot blocker. This shouldn’t be the case with Hamilton. TO’s are a tick higher than one would hope but not overly concerning.
10) Baron Davis PG 6'2'' 190 20 C+ C, B, B- C- B
Disappointing grades for Davis but TO’s aren’t an issue, so that’s a plus. He is the best PG in the draft but for being a PG heavy draft irl it is awful in this class. Francis, Davis and Miller all look like late 1st round picks at best. Davis is 3rd in college in steals so that’s encouraging but his scoring numbers leave a lot to be desired and he only has B potential. If he gets some TC love in his outside he could turn into a solid PG but C is a lot to overcome.
12) Jumaine Jones SF 6'8'' 220 20 B+ C, D+ C, C+ A
Great grades but they are a mirage. He has high TO's and isn't the most efficient scorer. With some TC luck he could be very good but will always have to deal with his TO issue.
13) Trajan Langdon SG 6'3'' 200 23 C+ B+ C, C+ C- B
We need a name for the B- A- SG's. Trajan should develop into a decent if not above average SG who can score decently. Not a flashy pick but a safe pick.
14) Richard Hamilton SG 6'6'' 185 21 C+ B- C+ C, C- B
More poor grades for profile players. Rip didn't score well in college but he did score efficiently. Pretty low grades but could certainly become serviceable with some upgrades. He also didn't turn the ball over so that's a definite bonus. Not great grades but it seems like all the right grades are okay.
15) Chris Herren PG 6'2'' 200 24 C+ B- A- C, D+ B
Decent looking PG who will most likely be a backup PG but with the way this class looks may be your best PG option.
Last) Steve Francis PG 6'3'' 194 22 C, C+ C, C, C, C,
Who is the eventual arbiter of the grades? Is it eric? He really did Steve Francis dirty. Francis can’t score, can’t pass and leads college in TO’s with C potential. He was the #2 pick in the draft, how can he be completely useless with no potential?
