Ron Mercer enters TMBSL as one of the more polished scorers in this draft class. He's an adept slasher and capable of attacking weak spots in the defense. He's a very good jumper which allows him to score among the trees and isn't afraid to attack the paint. He possesses a good jump shot and is capable of knocking down his free throws consistently, though his range doesn't extend past about 18 feet and he's no threat from three at this point in his development.
Despite his size, Mercer isn't a good rebounder. Scouts aren't entirely sure why - it appears to be a matter of an inability to read how the ball will come off the rim as he would seem to possess all of the tools necessary to at least be average in this department. He won't block shots and likely can't slide over to small forward as, in addition to his poor rebounding, he isn't particularly strong.
Scouts believe that Mercer has mediocre growth potential - if he would pass he'd be a very interesting point guard prospect, but he won't.
