How I got here

First let me start by telling you a bit more about me.  I am married, 44 and have 2 teenage daughters.  I coach high school hockey and middle school girls lacrosse.  I have been friends with Majic for about 7 years now and was introduced to the league by him a long time ago. After his consistent messaging I started getting more and more curious and eventually decided to look into it more, and WOW what a crazy first few day’s it has been for me. A new (potentially new) GM. Majic had been hyping it up for years to me. Finally, after many questions to Druce and Majic, I decided I would jump in a bit deeper. I was sent the link to view and lurked for a few days. It seemed to be an interesting group of individuals. Trying to find my way was rather difficult at times not because the group was making it difficult but because there seemed to be a good rapport amongst most of them.

I put my name on the sign-up list and then the drama started to unfold. There were a couple of inactive GM’s with teams that were not doing much. I started to participate in Shout and getting “my name” out there. I also made quite a name for myself with a bad joke in bad taste.
With all of that being said, the Cavaliers are here and looking to compete. I will make many mistakes along the way but will also be looking to be competitive as soon as possible. Let the fun begin!

Observations

First would be scouting. There is a large part of me that does not trust anyone and would never be willing to receive scouts from anyone other than Eric. The other issue is that everyone is going to value them differently, especially if they are getting them second hand. There is value in being the first person to have the information even if that information is for sale. I think there should be some level of scouting that is available to everyone then if you desire more you can pay for scouts. Think of it like the scouting combine. Every team gets to go to the scouting combine but I do also see where there are private workouts that allow you to get more information. I think if we all pay $5k in currency (which is auto-deducted each year) for a certain amount of intel but can have “private” workouts. Then go on to create a rule that the private workouts are not able to be traded should help eliminate or reduce the Nothing for Something trades.

Second is that the system in place that replaces inactive GM’s needs some tweaks. Now I do understand that the conversation has been started and I think we are on our way to a better system. I also think the Commissioner needs to step in and make judgement calls at time. Sometimes following the letter of the law is not in the leagues best interest. For example, I feel that letting a team that does not have an active GM be skipped when there is someone clearly waiting and want to help. At the very least have “the league” select the best player available. This way when someone does take the team over, they are not digging themselves out of a hole. I do think there is something to be said for the official quit thread but let’s be honest about it, if a GM has stepped away, what are the odds they come back and post in that thread. If a GM has not been active perhaps reaching out via text to find their intentions, then have the commissioner decide based off of their answer is seems to make the most sense. While I do understand not letting someone that is not a GM make decisions, I do not understand letting that team flail especially if we know that the team will not be contracted but taken over. Now if the team is being contracted then yes skip them in the draft and no need for any FA signings. If the team is not contracting the league should or could take them over till the timing allows for the new GM to take over. This just allows an incoming GM a better opportunity for success.

Third observation is that Shout can be amazing and awful at times. Which is exactly why I LOVE it. It is amazing and awesome and I look forward to many more arguments/agreements in Shout.
