Currently only awards winners from the previous season are eligible to become mentors (along with an A- grade), this imo excludes too much of the league from being able to utilize the mentor system.
So I'm proposing to expand eligibility to lifetime awards, not just from the immediate previous season

no. it works fine as it is. if we were to change to lifetime we would need to add a minimum age to it. late in 5.0 i proposed that and went through and calculated what the mentors would look like for everyone 30+. it was still substantial and gave more value to older players. i wouldn't mind seeing that but also we can't do that anytime soon.

I believe it gives those at the top of the league a competitive advantage.
So I would like to see it used as a lifetime thing
