Hello and welcome to our free agency preview. We had our team of esteemed interns review the list of potential free agents and identify any free agent worth more than an LLE. We had an all-hands meeting in the Report Warroom to rank these potential free agents. Below we’ve listed the top 25 with commentary. We’ve also included the remainder of the list in the honorable mention for the sake of keeping the list complete.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
1. DeMarcus Cousins
Former 1.1 is the top of this list, too. Elite two-way big with room to grow still. No brainer max candidate.
2. Soloman Alabi
Incredible pick by GM TimPig turns out to be the second best professional from this class. Elite rebounder and shot blocker. If he was a little more efficient on the offensive end he would be the top potential free agent in this class. Even without being the best, he’s still a FULL IAN MAX!
3. Immanuel Quickley
Very much under the radar, Quickley has been outstanding in Toronto this year, his first year starting. It’s always tricky to offer a point guard a max, but Quickley looks like he could be the heir apparent to Hough and Huckaby as the best PG in TMBSL. We expect that Delap will accept his third year, but that just means people need to be keeping their soft cap space for next year’s class.
4. Sergio Rodriquez
A minor step down from Quickley, but certain to be available as a potential FA this year. Rodriguez has an A outside rating, which explains his terrific shooting for Carolina. His shown defense is a little low for our liking here in Indiana, but look no further than Utah Jazz great Kyrie Irving for an example of a hall of fame PG with sub optimal defense. Expect Rodriguez to command top dollar in this class.
5. Saddiq Bey
Another potential third year option player, Bey is bey. Incredibly efficient wing that rebounds and doesn’t turn the ball over. If he was featured in an offense and didn’t have to play next to Lebron, Saddiq could be a star. An optimistic GM will take a chance and max Bey.
6. Paul George
Probably our last max candidate in this year’s class, George has a lot to like and a few questions marks. First, we like George’s grades, especially the rebounding as a SG eligible player. He’s moderately efficient, but turns the ball over all much. What we don’t like are his high passing which leads to very low volume for his scoring prowess. George is a player that will get a max, but will likely be amnestied by the end of the contract as better players become available.
7. Hassan Whiteside
Now we get to the point in this list where players are interesting, but haver definite warts. Whiteside is a D/R monster, but he is a step behind Alabi due to his atrocious offense. He seems to have just not developed offensively.
8. Andreas Glyniadakis
Dre could very well be a max candidate, but it’ll be a little bit more expensive than the players coming off their rookie deals. He is outstanding offensively but doesn’t really put up great defensive counting stats. His advanced age puts him a step behind Cousins, who is his closest comparison in this class of potential free agents.
9. Troy Murphy
Elite shot blocker who puts up decent offensive numbers. His advanced age puts him in this second tier of free agents. He’s still very good and should demand a solid offer.
10. Murray Jarmon
JARMAX is the second best Mavs wing to his FA this season. We imagine with his elite athletic attributes he could put up much better numbers as a scoring option on a lesser team. As is, he is an efficient wing that rebounds and doesn’t make too many mistakes.
11. Stanley Robinson
Paul George lite, Robinson’s grades are sexier than his output, but that’s not saying his output stinks – his grades are just fucking sexy. I expect he may get a max from rw or GM that looks solely at grades.
12. Derrick Favors
This gets to the point of the list where it is really tough to rank the players. We like Favors youth and potential. He’s a solid two-way big and hopefully he can refine his game a little during his second contract to become a solid starter for a championship contender.
13. Greg Monroe
Just a step behind Favors, Monroe is an almost identical big, but could possibly be a perennial all league player with his 6+ assists per 36 as a big man. Is that something a GM would pay a premium for?
14. Ricky Ledo
This is the point of the list where we go on a run of old, but very very good wings. These are all MLE type candidates that would get maxes if they were 10 years younger.
15. Freeman Williams
Id.
16. DeeAndre Hulett
Id.
17. Reggie Theus
Id.
18. Brad Sellers
Sellers is a good shot blocker that isn’t a liability anywhere. He’s not going to get any better through the end of his career, so we don’t see anyone offering more than an MLE here.
19. Butch Lee
Elite point guard that is an MLE due to age.
20. Pops Mensah-Bonsu
Classic D/R big. Not as good as Withey, but ahead of him on this list due to his age.
21. Joel Freeland
Top 5 scoring potential FA. Sure he’s got inflated stats playing on Ward’s old squad, but he also has all of his upgrades. Someone will take a chance.
22. Karl Anthony Towns
Old, but elite. Will definitely get an MLE+ if he doesn’t retire.
23. Frank Ntilikina
Old, but elite. Will definitely get an MLE+ if he doesn’t retire.
24. Popeye Jones
Unupgraded big that looks really interesting. Someone will take a chance.
25. Tyler Bey
Last on our list is another big that has youth on his side. A few of the honorable mentions below probably would be the better short term offer, but Bey is finishing his second year and has all of his upgrades left. Do you guys see a theme?
HM: Kendrick Perkins, Jahlil Okafor, Jeff Withey, Rashad Vaughn, Justice Winslow
