The biggest thing that scouts and Jay Bilas talk about when they talk about Kevin McHale is WINGSPAN. This lyrtch ass looking mother fucker is rocking an 8 foot long one. That is the kind of length you can't teach and gives McHale one of the biggest upsides in the draft. That length gives him the ability to make just about every big in the league this side of Manute Bol look silly with his unblockable hook shot. Not only that, his jumper is refined and he can hit consistently out to 18 feet. At that height and with those long arms, not many defenders are getting a hand in his face, much less on his shots. While he wasn't among the nation's most prolific rebounders, he was known for his crafty ability to sneak into the lane for a tip-in or quick putback at Minnesota.
His length also allows him to block way more shots than someone with his athletic ability should be able to. You would think it would also make him an elite defensive rebounder, but his lack of verticality and strength still hinders him there as he struggles to maintain position against bulkier big men. This is the one area of his game where his potential upside is hindered, his athletic ability. McHale is a beanpole and doesn't make up for what he lacks in strength in speed. He will need to put on some weight to truly tap into his upside. However, unlike others in this class we've commented on with a lot of potential, McHale stands above the rest as someone who truly seems to want to be great. He put in the work in college and we expect that to continue at the next level. He gives a lot of effort on defense and he does on the boards as well, he'll just need to hit the weight room to turn that effort into success at a consistent level as a professional.
