A GM Interview - Sapular
In my opinion it's about time this happened.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am RW, I used to be very active on TMB about 10 years ago, we sure are getting old. I was known for being a diehard UM fan then ended up going to University of Wisconsin and switching allegiances. I used to work in sports radio but made the radical shift to teaching English with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia. I have since taught in Uganda, recruited for the Peace Corps and am now getting my masters from University of Minnesota. I'm currently consulting for World Vision in Kenya then going back to Ethiopia to work on an NGO startup I created.
Do you remember what brought you to sim league?
That's a good question. I went back to my old PM's and the first mention of TMBSL is from September 12th, 2012, from none other than Bankz. I didn't respond, but it looks like I have to give him credit. I looked back and was apparently an active inviter for TMBSL back in the day, had about 10 PM's to people I thought would be interested. Funny to look back at your old PM's.
Congratulations on your championship in 3041. I believe this is your 2nd now. Which to you was more satififying? The first or the one that beat the Dump Dynasty?
I remain one of the most prolific losers on TMBSL. I have made the finals once in an estimated 50-60 sim seasons. My overall record in well under .500. I used to be legitimately angry about my failures in TMBSL as a young lad in college. It affected me much more than it should have, one of the reasons I initially quit is I took everything much too seriously.
Speaking of Dump, anything you would want to say to your friend? You always have kind words to share to each other.
Oh dump. I used to have roughly an equal internet maturity so we could go back and forth back when he was the GM of the Raptors. I wish nothing but the best for dump and hope he is bathing in Dr.Pepper every night and sleeping next to his mail order bride that Bankz bought him.
Time for some lists, can you give me a list of your all time 5 best and worst GM's of sim league and a little reason why?
I'm going off memory and could be remembering incorrectly, I do my best to state when I am
1)Soup
2)Jay (Who was the old GM of the Heat who would continually retool and demolish the league in 2.0?)
3) Ward
4) Eric
5) Fason
HM:Trofie, Dirt, kn
Worst:
1) Me
2) Dump
3) Pete
4) Bankz
5) Odin (love the dude but he would get bored and blow up everything on a whim)
We all have that one GM that we just hate to deal with and talk with, who is that GM for you and why?
Bankz, dude was legitimately delusional and I spent many angry hours fuming about how he stumbled into TMBSL 1.0 legend Nick Diaz.
Can you give me your all time starting 5 of sim league. Players do not need to be current.
C: Dwight Howard
PF: Kevin Garnett
SF: Nick Diaz
SG: Shabazz Muhammad (completely homer pick but he was a stud)
PG: Soup's Mavs PG (Who was it in 2.0? That was when B+ handles made you PG eligible, can't remember his name though)
What is the best sporting event you have attended?
I've been fortunate to go to some pretty cool sporting events through my old job at ESPN radio but honestly the best sporting event I have ever been to is Wisconsin - Michigan in 2012. I waited for 6 hours to be in the front row, Tim Hardaway hit a fade away 3 with 1 second left to put the #2 Wolverines up by 3. Ben Brust then hit a half court shot to send the game into OT where the Badgers won and we rushed the court.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
- Frank Kaminsky. I had an unfounded affinity for Frank when we were both Freshman. I thought this goofy, tall fool was what I would have been had I been a serious athlete. I interviewed him numerous times his freshman and sophomore year with the student radio station when he was an absolute unknown. At media day his sophomore year while everyone was getting swarmed by media I pulled up a chair and had a 20 minute interview by myself with Frank because no one was interested in talking to this bum. Then his junior year he blew up, it was farcical. My roommates hated me for how obnoxious I was. I would cheer everytime he touched the court his sophomore year then he dropped 42 on UW-Greenbay his junior year then went on to become the best player in college basketball his senior year and set the record for highest PER ever. Wisconsin beat the undefeated Towns led Kentucky team and I was along for the ride.
If you could make one change to sim league, what would that change be and why?
I don't like the wheel. I always thought the art of tanking was the only thing I was ever good at.
Rank your top 5 drinks by choice.
1 - Coffee
2 - Lemonade
3 - Polar seltzers
4 - Water
5- I don't drink anything else
In my opinion, you are one of the best at evaluating players in sim league and finding hidden gems. Obviously, you do not want to give away too much but anything you would care to share about what you look for?
This question is not for me. I am not good at evaluating hidden gems. I look for guys like Keith Tower who look like decent players that only need a little growth and get disappointed by their regression and my ineptitude.
In life we all have those teams and fanbases that we don't like or cannot stand. What fanbase is that for you and why?
OSU fans, Alabama/SEC fans of shitty schools. Alabama/SEC fans because they shouldn't be proud of their football team when their highest state educational institution has failed. The South has the lowest performance by just about every metric (education, GDP per capita, life expectancy) but fools think life is good when they win the Egg bowl. Quit living through your football team and fix your shitty state if you really have pride in your University and state.
OSU fans are the manifestation of why I decided to leave the country.
Let's get some ND talk in here, Are we now a basketball school or what do you see in the future with Brian Kelly and the football team?
ND is a close to OSU.
We have Valentines day approaching, if I gave you the powers of Cupid and you can hit love arrows, who would you match up with what gms?”
I don't know what this means. Maybe I'll go with Ank trading away Bogans for a top 5 pick this year or next year.
Any final words or shout outs?
Happy to be back, and this wheel sucks, why does a new GM only have 1 top 5 pick in his first 6 years. I don't care about standard deviations how can I build a team with the best available player being Keith Tower or Christian Laettner
