A do-it-all point guard with excellent size and elite athleticism, Ja Morant is incredibly adept at creating offense in a variety of ways, both for himself and for his teammates. He led the TMBNCAA in assists last season with 10 per game and was also the 7th leading scorer with 24.5 points per game. He was efficient down low, from mid-range, and showed massive development from behind the arc between his freshman and sophomore seasons as well, improving from a subpar 30% to a respectable 36%, but he'll need to keep at it to reach league average from the pro line. Defenses are forced to respect him no matter where he has the ball, as his fantastic speed allows him to penetrate at will. He gets to the line frequently and converted 80% of his free throws in college. Simply put, Morant is the full package on offense.
At the next level, scouts expect that Morant's mid-range and three-point game will need further development so that he can be just as effective in the pros as he was against subpar college competition. He was by far the best player on his Murray State team - and arguably the best player in college basketball last year - which meant extraordinarily high usage that led to a decent amount of turnovers as he would often have to force the issue. He'll need to show better ball security at the next level. Defensively, he likes to gamble which led to a respectable number of steals, but he wasn't exactly what you'd call fundamentally sound on that end, and doesn't have the size to get more than a block here and there.
There's a ton of upside still left to Morant's game and some scouts believe he'll end up the best player from this draft class.
