Smith may be among the less hyped prospects that will likely go in the first round of this draft, but he can be a steadying presence for whoever does take him. A two-time Conference POY his final two seasons in Lorman, Smith's calling card is his work on the boards. He put up a tremendous 790 boards over 55 games (14.4! rpg) in his final two years of college basketball. Despite being only an average athlete at the next level, his positioning and hustle on the boards at both ends of the court is outstanding and he will likely at least be among the best offensive rebounders in the game upon arrival.
Aside from his board work, scouts expect Smith to be able to contribute on both ends. By no means is he an elite scorer or shot-blocker, but he won't be a liability with the ball in his hands or as a defender. He is smart with the ball, not getting himself into trouble and passing up looks that are low percentage. He has a solid handle for a man his size. Smith could stand to focus on improving the consistency and repeatability of his shot mechanics, as he was a bit of an adventure with some lows and highs in the department throughout his college career, but he did convert almost 70% of his free throws his last year of college so the ability is there. Defensively, he is a solid team defender. He can be bullied at times by stronger players, but he holds up pretty well against most. Don't expect a lot of blocks or steals, but he'll provide value by grabbing more than his share of rebounds.
