One of the better athletes in this year's class, Devin Vassell's natural ability projects him to be a contributor on both ends of the floor. He's a high flyer and capable of finishing consistently above the rim, but isn't a one-trick pony as he has also shown range during his time as a Seminole, hitting over 40% of his threes. He showed quite a bit of progress on his jumper as a sophomore and scouts expect it to be a strength as a pro.
Vassell was prone to dud performances when he'd play tentatively, which has made scouts worry about him having the killer instinct that could put somewhat of a ceiling on his scoring ability, and lacks the quickness to get all the way to the rim which can lead him to settle for contested midrange shots. Quite frankly, he isn't strong enough to finish in traffic and often doesn't even try, as evidenced by him averaging just 2.2 free throws per game during his final season at FSU. While it hampers the offense, it also means Vassell almost never turns the ball over (he averaged just 1.1 TO per 40 minutes last year) despite having some strong passing ability for a forward. Though he can get pushed around in the post and especially on the backboards, good awareness combined with his plus jumping make him a solid weak side shot blocker.
Scout see lots of future growth in Vassell and think he likely becomes a good outside shooter at the next level who is able to put up some counting stats on the defensive side of the ball.
