The most successful executive in NBA history is Red Auerbach, who over thirty years built four distinguishable championship cores:
Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, Bill Sharman
John Havlicek, Sam Jones, Bill Russell
Dave Cowens, John Havlicek, Jo Jo White
Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Bob Parish
Another famous winning organization is the San Antonio Spurs duo of Gregg Popovich and R.C. Buford, who built about two and a half:
Tim Duncan, Mario Elie, David Robinson
Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker
Tim Duncan, Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker but way older and way worse
There's no real statistical standout on the 2014 championship team, and Tony Parker was All-Star & All-NBA and in fact the team's only one on either
Especially with Manu still on the 2014 team and contributing well it doesn't really strike me as all that distinguishable,
but Kawhi did win Finals MVP
Besides them there's hardly any historical cases with even two.
Doctor Jack Ramsay is definitely one for the '67 76ers and '77 Blazers.
Jerry West is probably not one:
certainly he gets credit for the Shaq Lakers, but
he was only in charge for the second half of Showtime, and maybe didn't even draft James Worthy
details of when specifically he took over and what exactly the chain of command was between club president and general manager are hazy
.
But there is one active GM who has built three distinct championship cores:
Chris Bosh, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade
Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Kevin Love
Anthony Davis, Dwight Howard, LeBron James
LeBron James deserves to be in the Hall of Fame as a GM.
And he's got a pretty good case as a player too.
