New York City, NY (AP) – Due to recent changes in TMBSL rules, Day 100, once known as the Trade Deadline, is now becoming just as famous for being the amnesty and buyout deadline. Due to shrewd GMs using the old set of amnesty rules to their advantage and bringing back expensive players on cheaper deals in Free Agency, league commissioner Eric decided modifications were needed to the amnesty timeline. The new rule went into effect two seasons ago and as GMs have adapted, new strategies have emerged.
In 3024, the deadline saw Carlos Boozer amnestied by the Cougars to clear cap space for the offseason. This move was made even though the Cougars were a playoff team and could have been without Boozer during the stretch run.
This year, we have already seen numerous teams submit paperwork to amnesty contracts ahead of Day 100’s deadline. Let’s take a look at who has already sent in paperwork and discuss other rumored amnesties that may still get submitted.
Butch Lee was amnestied by the Utah Jazz yesterday, sending him and his remaining 5 years and 50 million dollar contract to the waiver wire. The long time Hornets point guard has been a bit of a journeyman since signing the contract extension in Charlotte as young gun Jamaal Tinsley continued to improve and eventually took Lee’s job.
Today, we have seen the Texas Chaparrals submit amnesty paperwork on veteran big man Clint Capela who has 2 years and 38.8 million dollars remaining on his deal. Capela will likely be an important piece added to a contender via waivers as he currently ranks 3rd in TMBSL with 3.9 blocks per 36 minutes played. How much a team is willing to commit to the 37 year old Capela in year two of the contract may be the deciding factor in which team lands the big man.
Also, the Portland Trail Blazers faxed over the necessary papers to amnesty Cliff Anderson after Anderson spent the last four years with the Blazers. Anderson, a former 2nd round pick, was a surprise max contract signing with Portland, but he was able to contribute as a scorer for his first few seasons in the pacific northwest. Lately, Anderson had been surpassed on the depth chart by young guys like Josh Howard, Frankie Sanders and rookie sensation Michael Jordan so he was only getting 6 minutes per game this season. Anderson has 3 years and 52 million remaining on his contract so it remains to be see how much of a market there will be for him on the waiver wire.
Word on the street is that the Carolina Cougars are looking to scrape together enough cash to pay out the remainder of Jack Givens’ 6 year, 28 million dollar deal before the day is done. Givens, who is in his second stint in Carolina, just signed the contract last offseason but has been a slight disappointment and relegated to a small role after the team acquired Rashad Vaughn midseason from Toronto.
But the possible bombshell news comes out of New York, where rumors are swirling that Kyrie Irving and Kawhi Leonard both may be on the chopping block for the Knicks. Both players have been fixtures in New York for seasons, but Kyrie Irving is the greatest player TMBSL 6.0 has seen and he’s spent his entire career with the Knicks.
