Good afternoon GMs and welcome to another round table.
With all the attention recently to potential GM firings, we at Herb Simon Says brought to you by the Cuban Report, wanted to focus on a few of our potential replacements by asking them20s 9 questions to test their mettle and see who could handle the pace and intensity of being the next TMBSL GM.
We appreciate the time Candidate Handsome Pete, Candidate Sapular, and Candidate GBG took in answering our questions. Without further ado we are pleased to bring to you, the candidates in their own words.
1. Tell me a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? What hobbies do you have? Who is your favorite singer/songwriter?
Handsome Pete - Hey guys, long-time, long-time. Just your average washed up former GM hailing from the DC area. Big fan of dumpster fire teams like the Eagles, Gamecocks, Wizards and Phillies. Current hobbies include sitting in my living room, sitting at my desk, and laying in my bed. I'm not much for singer/songwriter combos but I've heard about an up-and-comer who's really something. I think she played for the Knicks once.
Sapular - I live in the suburbs of Cleveland. I am married and have 2 teenage daughters. I play video games and am a hockey coach. My favorite band of all time is Metallica but love all genres of music
GBG - 35/M/IN. My hobbies include watching Michigan athletics let me down over and over. I also play quite a bit of softball during the summers, and I play video games on the reg. I enjoy watching movies, show, and the like. As far as singers/songwriters... I don't have a favorite. Some great story tellers in the classic rap game, tho. I used to read things... not so much anymore.
2. How did you find out about sim league?
Handsome Pete - A man named Duc slid into my DMs about 7 or so years ago after I started posting in the TMB NBA thread. I joined the league in the wake of a Bankz-Dump blowup and steered the Toronto Raptors towards mediocrity for the better part of 4 IRL years.
Sapular - Majic and Druce. Majic has been hyping up the league for a long time
GBG - I found the sim league from TMB and more specifically Trofie invited me to join back in 4.0.
3. Why are you interested in being a GM in the league?
Handsome Pete - I started back in school towards the end of 4.0 to get the credits I needed to sit for the CPA exam. My lack of free time started to catch up with me and I became a bit of an absentee GM. 5.0 started and I was briefly re-energized by the brilliance of Brain Winter and Gallopin' Harry Gallatin, but once that initial creation team fizzled out, I didn't have the energy to commit to a tear down and left after a few seasons of light engagement. I'm now finished with school and 11 days away from taking the 4th and final section of the CPA exam, and saw that the league was rebooting again. A lot of the long-gone GMs are back in the league and #wheel is reality, so I think the time is right to give it another go.
Sapular - I have always fashioned myself an amateur GM in all sports. Assuming I can do better than any real professional and this is an opportunity for me to flex my GM/scouting/Salary Cap muscle
GBG - Well, I have a nice laptop at the house now... One of the main reasons I bailed was that I couldn't really sim league at the office like I used to and I didn't have a very functioning laptop at home. Also, I'm a big time basketball fan with a solid knowledge of some old time greats. I have plenty to prove in the sim league as well since my last stint was set up for success by Soup.
4. We have a full league. It's a kill or be killed situation. Which current GM would you remove to free up a spot and why?
Handsome Pete - I don't think there's anybody in the league that I had any ongoing animosity. I'll spice things up and say BK because I think he used to get on my nerves in shout and when we played mafia. I would also happily take out Delap to reclaim my thrown as the Raptors GM. The Raps look pretty good out of the gates, which is a bonus.
Sapular - I would recommend removing anyone that isn't updating a roster or posting consistently. They are not really participating and I would say are creating results that are not accurate due to the fact that the line-up isnt set consistently. Therefore not really showing what teams are good and what are not.
GBG - I'm not sure who Mike is... but fuck that guy. Boot him and let the Zollner Pistons make their return.
5. What are your playoff predictions? Who are the conference finalists, league finalists, and champion?
Handsome Pete - Despite the wheel, it looks like there's a handful of teams that have separated from the pack. Bobcats, Raps and Magic in the east and Mavs, Grizz and Clippers in the west all look legit. I think the Knicks could also make a deep run based on Bojan, but Ank may need a guard to threaten those other teams. Shout out to Soup, who put together a strong team from the back of creation draft round 1. Old guys always seem to go way lower than they should in creation. For playoff predictions, I'll say that the Mavs and Grizz meet in the West, and the Bobcats and Knicks face off in the East. I think Mavs v. Bobcats, and the Mavs take it.
Sapular - So with the playoff predictions it is tough to say because in both conferences there are a number of teams within striking distance. The only ones I am counting out are NO Pelicans and The Warriors. As far as from there I think in the West Dallas and Vancouver will end up in the Conference finals, in the East I will say Charlotte and Orlando will make a run again. The Champion will end up being Magic...bold I know but from what I can tell skrouse knows what it takes to win but will depend on him being able to pull off a few last-minute trades.
GBG - I haven't paid too much attention thus far, but looking at the standings it looks like Odin has himself a squad this year. I'll say Bobcats over Pacers and Druce over Soup in the West. Then, since Odin can't have nice things, Druce will take the title.
6. Have you listened to any of the sim league podcasts? Whether you have or have not, please rank them by tier (1 through 3). More than one podcast can be in a tier.
Handsome Pete - I was a frequent podcast guest in a former life but I haven't listened to any of them for 5.0. I probably won't until I'm back in the league. To much other content to consume. Without giving any of them a listen, I'd put them all squarely in tier 2.
Sapular - I have not yet as I am not totally sure the context around them but will be listening as I feel I have gained a much better grasp of the league over the weekend as I spent quite a bit of time in the message boards
GBG - I've listened to a few in my day, but I'm going to say the original Bankz pod, and then the Timpig pods are tier 1 and the rest don't matter
7. Majic cannot throw a football more than 40 yards. Can you?
Handsome Pete - If the football is fully inflated, no doubt. But if it's not, all bets are off.
Sapular - I can and you should ask him about me owning him in Fowling (football bowling)
Majic - [Sapular] likes to embellish.. at my bachelor party we played a best of 3 or something. He beat me in OT or something like that.
GBG - Nope. My rotator cuff is torn, and I can barely throw a softball from home to second base these days.
8. When you get a team, Ankly will send you a trade request. Politely decline it.
Handsome Pete - Buster popped my cherry a long time ago. Ank has no interest in damaged goods.
Sapular - Noted and while I will probably decline it, I will ponder it and consider it.
GBG - Obviously.
9. Super bowl prediction?
Handsome Pete - Chiefs roll over the Bucs, Andy Reid takes his rightful place among the all-time great head coaches, and Mahomes brings us another title closer to forgetting that Brady was ever considered the GOAT. Chiefs 37, Bucs 23
Sapular - Game, Blouses. In all seriousness, I see no way that the Buc's can win this game. KC is too strong
GBG - I wish I could say that Tom Brady is going to take it home, but honestly the KC offense is insane. I have to take the Chiefs in a closer than expected win.
