A GM Interview - SapularIn my opinion it's about time this happened.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
- I am 44, married, have 2 daughters (my worst nightmare). I coach high school hockey. I am a pretty normal guy but have had an amazing and super entertaining life. I will slowly reveal some of my stories. I am a huge smart ass and love to just have a good time.
Do you remember what brought you to sim league?
Majic would not shut up about it. He has been trying to talk me into this for well over a year. BTW he sucks at selling the league. He can’t explain anything in a way that makes sense or makes it appear to be fun. Druce is the one that does the heavy lifting but I am sure this is not news to anyone.
Congratulations on your championship in 3041. I believe this is your 2nd now. Which to you was more satififying? The first or the one that beat the Dump Dynasty?
Speaking of Dump, anything you would want to say to your friend? You always have kind words to share to each other.
- I will replace Dump with Majic here. While there are times when I cannot fucking stand him, at the end of the day he is a generous man with a big heart. He can be selfish at times but more than anything he has busted his ass to be who he is today and has never taken the shortcut. His life could be much different than it is but he was determined to be different and I would say he has done an amazing job.
Time for some lists, can you give me a list of your all time 5 best and worst GM's of sim league and a little reason why?
- I am going to go strictly off of my perception in Shout. Top 5 would be:
- 1. Druce – he appears to be able to manipulate any roster over time and always be successful, I mean he is running 2 teams right now and soon to be 3
- 2. Soup – He seems to have a proven way of doing things and is confident in the decisions he makes
- 3. Bankz – He is pretty active with actual breakdown at night and has solid reasoning behind why he does what he does
- 4. Odin – when he does shout it is usually something that is well thought out and an opinion he has worked on developing over time
- 5. 20s – I like the way he thinks. It seems to be a bit outside of the “norm” and sometimes that is what is needed to be successful
- My bottom 5 would be:
- 1. Majic – I know he is notoriously difficult to deal with, meaning actually trade. He over values his side of things and under values yours
- 2. Irush – again only from Shout because he appears to be like me and learning a bit so he is going to make some bad decisions
- 3. Heebs – while I understand what he is doing, why he is doing it and is well within his right, seems that he may be a bit stubborn at times.
- 4. And 5. Are BA and Boomslick as they aren’t here, well till last night when BA showed back up.
We all have that one GM that we just hate to deal with and talk with, who is that GM for you and why?
- I will give a description of the person since I don’t know the other GM’s well enough. I would say someone that is always looking to “win” the trade or discussion. I think trades need to be and can be wins for both teams. It is a give and take. Too often people over value their assets and under value the asset they want. You have to give up something to get something in return yet not everyone understands that. A trade is often one step back but 2 forward. Many only appear to be interested if it is 2 steps forward only.
Can you give me your all time starting 5 of sim league. Players do not need to be current.
- I don’t know the stats of the previous players well enough to even attempt to answer this question.
What is the best sporting event you have attended?
- I attended game 5 of the 1995 World Series between the Cleveland Indians (yes that is their name and will always be) and the Atlanta Braves. Holy moly can you imagine if those 2 teams met now? Peoples heads may fall off.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
- Wayne Gretzky. I am a huge hockey fan and I grew up watching him play. The older I get the more I appreciate him because to look at him you would think anything athletic for him would be hard. He showed and still shows that you do not need to be the biggest, fastest in order to be the best. His skill is unmatched in any sport, IMO. He is the epitome of making others around him better. He was so good that literally anyone he was on the ice with was amazing
If you could make one change to sim league, what would that change be and why?
- For obvious reasons I would change the way inactive GM’s are replaced and how new GM’s are selected. I understand why the rule is in place and why Eric is treating as such (which is why he seems like a good commish) however there are times when rules need to be bent if not broken. I feel I have made a good case for myself if for other reason than activity and willingness to engage. I’m a damn good fit for the league.

In my opinion, you are one of the best at evaluating players in sim league and finding hidden gems. Obviously, you do not want to give away too much but anything you would care to share about what you look for?
- So as I start to daydream about being given a team my mind will wander and I wonder what I would do. So in my limited knowledge I will be looking at potential, age and inside. From just talking to Majic and Druce and reading Shout it appears that those are the biggest factors to be looking for. Now I will probably develop my own strategy as I learn and grow but my thoughts around a good team is always keeping a young core and finishing with older vets that are the final few pieces. Also looking for a bit of depth on the bench to make sure that the drop off isn’t significant.
In life we all have those teams and fanbases that we don't like or cannot stand. What fanbase is that for you and why?
Being from Ohio I hate 3 groups of people. Fans of That Team Up North, I cant even say the school, people from Pittsburgh and NY Yankee fans. They are the worst of the worst and do nothing by cry and complain ALL the time. They are the definition of insufferable.
Let's get some ND talk in here, Are we now a basketball school or what do you see in the future with Brian Kelly and the football team?
- So Druce and I have spoken about this. I am not a Brian Kelly fan. I think the team has been good in spite of him. He cant recruit QB’s, which is odd to me. He seems to be his own biggest fan and up there with Nick Saban as far as ego, without the titles to back it up. I also know he is a dick. I have friends that have interacted with him and he is a pompous cock sucker
We have Valentines day approaching, if I gave you the powers of Cupid and you can hit love arrows, who would you match up with what gms?
- I mean I am not sure I have a lot to say on this one as I don’t know you guys well enough yet and am getting there. I supposed I would send everyone their “dream” girl for 24 hours but just to mix it up a bit I would make one of the “dream” girls a trans person just to make sure they knew I don’t fuck around and even in every good deed that I do there is a portion of, “don’t fuck with me”
Any final words or shout outs?
- I will say that I think Majic was right to keep pushing me towards this. It seems fun and right up my alley. I have been playing GM with all of my favorite teams for years and now I finally do something about it. I also think the group of guys is pretty solid and I am having fun mixing it up in Shout. I will say I am looking to enter the league with a foe. It is easy to pick Druce or Majic but I want a natural enemy. I am hoping that I develop one in Shout so it is easy to do when Eric finally graces me with a team.
