Quick and Dirty Productions presents: TMBSL Top 10 Shooting Guards
The SG position is a mystery to some and a strength for others. Going through the rosters we have so few SGs that start and get minutes. I was curious and decided to take a look at who are the best? How many are worth a shit and is it worth it to have a top 10 list of best SGs in the league? I was a little surprised but not as surprised as i thought i would be. I assumed more would be starter worthy but in reality, i don't think that's correct. The handful on the list are the same player with a different name. Each year the percentages change slightly but it just differs throughout the years. I think we have some amazing SGs that is very rare to find. Below is a list i put together. Some will disagree some will think it's pointless to rank these players. Surprise i did it anyway.
#1 Victor Oladipo
SG 29 6'5'' 220 A- A C A- C+ C
-Victor Oladipo comes out on top as the best SG in the league. I think his numbers are insane. He’s a solid rebounder amazing steals and his volume is insane. Sap was very fortunate to get this guy by just a couple of losses two seasons ago.
#2. Terrance Ferguson
SG 28 6'6'' 190 B+ A B A C+ C
The third rounder and mentored Fergie comes in 2nd and one of the few SGs that have a ring. He played a huge role last season taking the Rockets to the mountain top. He’s very similar to Dipo but I think he’s slightly underneath him.
#3. Dwyane Wade
SG 22 6'4'' 220 A- A- B B+ C C
This is where things get a bit tougher. I put Dwade at 3 because of his defense. I think his FG% will get better this year and that will solidify his place on this list. It’s hard not to put a SG with 1.1 block a game top 3 on this list. I’m curious to see if he can grow his outside even more throughout his rookie contract.
#4 Dajuan Wagner
SG 33 6'3'' 205 B+ A+ C B- C C
You can say Wagner is really 3b because hes still a stud in the league. He has had an amazing career and has had some amazing TCs turning into the best SG throughout his early years. You can still argue he’s the #1 SG right now. I would say he’s very similar to Oladipo just older. It’s amazing he’s steal playing at such a high level at the age of 33.
#5. Charlie Bell
SG 25 6'3'' 200 B A C+ A- C A
What an amazing story for Trofie selecting such an amazing player at 1.9. Bell has turned into a really good player with amazing steals and has grown his inside shot enough to be a top 5 player at his position. It’s good to know we can still draft SGs early and they can turn into a legit starter and mentor.
#6. Joseph Forte
SG 23 6'4'' 204 B A- C+ B+ C B
I think this is when you start talking about 2nd tier shooting gaurds. Forte is a solid player but doesn’t have the volume to be in same circle as the top 5. It will be interesting to see what he can do as a #1 option with an outside focus. But for now he sits at 6 with solid steals and turnovers and continues on his 49% Field Goal percentage. He doesn’t have the inside grade as the others but his percentages say different. I’m curious to see what his build is and compare it to some of the others I’ve seen. Solid Player but just not there yet.
#7 Cliff Anderson
SG 27 6'2'' 200 A- A- C C+ C D
Cliff was a 2nd rounder put in the scrap heap but picked up and given a chance by the Mavericks. He was a solid FA signing the next year and continues to play good basketball with good enough percentages to start on a good team. I think he suits a team better as a back up but he can shoot with the rest of the them. If his FG% could stay around 50% he could be a really solid piece to a championship team. His downside is obviously his defense and rebounding and that’s why he sits here at the 7 slot.
#8.Freeman Williams
SG 26 6'4'' 190 B+ A C- C+ C C
The volume shooter in New York sits at 8 only because of his down year last season. If he can contune on this path this season like he was 2 years ago maybe he could be a slot above. Very similar to Cliff with low rebounds and Turnovers but a nice piece for a roster like the Knicks. He doesn’t have to fight off the bigs for shots and can shoot a will.
#9 Desmond Mason
SG 29 6'6'' 207 A- A C C C C
I think you realize there is a trend from the last 3 players. They are do the same thing and are very similar players. One may have a better season than the other but they are what they are. They should be specialized in an outside offense and we know there are only a handful that could really use this tier of a SG. It’s a bit frustrating when you see the grades on the surface but without knowing the full builds they all play the same.
#10. Joe Dumars
SG 35 6'3'' 200 B A- C+ B C- C
Just a few short years ago I would say Joe deserves to be a top 5 SG. His age has brought him lower on the list. A great defender that is probably playing in the wrong offense. Still a really solid starter at the 2 position. If he didn’t make so much I’d guarantee there would be more of a market for him. I can argue he should be around #6 but decided with his age to showcase younger talent in the league.
