James Ray is the enigma of this year's draft class. Coming from a middling Sun Belt program in Jacksonville University, Ray is the subject of debate among many scouts about what his true ceiling is. While all the scouts agree that he has above average explosiveness compared to the rest of the bigs in this class, he is one of the older potential draftees and didn't put up dominating numbers at a program with questionable competition. While he did win Conference Player of the Year as a senior, his stats were middling compared to other players in this class.
What we do know is that Ray is a wiry, lanky, firecracker of a player who used his quickness to take advantage of lesser athletic specimen in the Sun Belt conference. He was a frequent finisher of dunks and layups off of backdoor cuts and pick and rolls and rarely created his own shot from the block. His shot mechanics are passable for the next level but don't expect him to expand his range much further than the occasional elbow jumper.
He has the tools to be a good rebounder but appears to need to develop the want-to. He would occasionally get pushed off the block by someone more willing to do the dirty work and box out. Don't expect him to shut down bigger players posting him up on the block, but he will create some turnovers with his quick hands and turn away some shots as a helpside rim defender. Some dedication to the weight room would help tremendously on that end.
