Last Week the TMBSL world witnessed the bubbling over of a conflict where a deadline approached with growing tension. What happened and how it happened can best be told by those directly involved. I reached out to both parties to get their take on the events leading up to free agency and the fallout of decisions made. This is their story in their own words.

We've seen your rundown of the events with Lakers GM Handsome Pete. Can you talk a bit about what your plan was, how the plan changed, and how you think it may shape your franchise moving forward?
So my initial play was to buy out VJ Beacham, however I missed the time to buy him out and was looking for cap space. My plan was to get room for one max player. I had a deal in place with Dirt so I am in the middle of a rebuild and was hoping for one good piece that I could anchor around. This puts me behind my plan by a couple years
Walk us through your state of mind after receiving no reply from Handsome Pete. What was it like inside the Cavs front office?
I am not going to lie there was panic. We had sent the Lakers a message at 8:51 in the morning of Day 1 of FA. We then waited patiently. The day went by. Our chief decision maker had a commitment, coaching his hockey team, but had his phone on him the whole time and was constantly checking for updates, but nothing. The GM then texts the Lakers at 6:21 pm and we can confirm the text was read because Handsome Pete has read receipts on his messages. Still NO response to the text. Finally, Sap, responds to the original message about the Lakers and their willingness to take on cap, and the Lakers finally respond 2 minutes prior to FA starting. We were FURIOUS. It was oddly calm in the office as we were expecting the worst at this point, but the lack of professionalism was astounding
The panic was during the day but oddly enough just before it was not panic, just rage
How do you view your relationship with Pete currently?
Non-existent, he is dead to me
I won’t even acknowledge him in Shout
I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire
Speaking of fire, are the Cavs on the verge of a fire sale? Is this a direct result of Pete's behavior?
No, the decision to trade Fultz was made long before Pete decided to show his true colors as a man of ZERO integrity.
What do you say to the Pete defenders? Those saying this may have been YOUR fault?
While I do acknowledge my responsibility in relying on someone to free up cap...I cannot fathom how there are ANY Pete defenders. He lied and did not communicate his decision to change his mind (which he was free to do) to the people he was negotiating with and there was at least one other team he lead on. He is the ultimate cock tease and one day he is going to play this game with the wrong person at the wrong time and, sadly it may be the death of him.
Pete defenders have pointed to your feud with Killy Bing and noticed there is a common denominator between the two situations. How do you respond to that criticism?
Those are 2 totally different situations. My issue with BK is his elevated sense of self. He thinks he is God's gift to SIM. I listened to his advice about not taking Kaba yet gives me shit about it. It is the constant needing to prove how he is right and everyone else wrong. The Pete situation is just a person of low character and not someone I would want in my foxhole
Who would you want in your foxhole? Give us a rundown of your favorite GMs to work with outside of your personal friends.
Well easiest to work with are:
Odin
Dirt
Ank
Delap
KC
Pointy
BA
I have not not much as far as dealings with others but I have no issues with anyone else in the league even BK. We dont have to be best friends, just a level of professionalism. My only hesitation with BK would be that, and this is in my head, he would be trying to take advantage of me
What would you say to GMs thinking of dealing with Pete in the future?
Don't do it
or if you do dont count on him being a man of his word
or even replying to you or him extending common decency
Will this situation give you pause moving forward in your conversations with other GMs? What have you learned?
I have learned that I can NEVER count on anyone
In your own words, what happened between yourself and Sap?
Sap misunderstood my trade block as an open call for salary dumping, when I was really just trying to see if there might be another Justise Winslow-type player available for someone eager to get enough cap space for the free agent market. He messaged me about taking on two players, both of whom were on multi-year deals, for timpig pennies, and I told him I wanted to see what else would come through. I was far from committing to do the deal if nothing else came through, but I didn't want to completely shut the door in case I needed cash. I never replied back one way or the other but frankly I don't think I owed him that. If I wasn't interested in the deal off the bat I most likely wasn't going to want to take it a day later. I've been on the other side of this plenty of times and it's really not something worth getting upset about.
Was there any malicious intent meant by your timing and actions?
I'd like to say no, but clearly Sap has uncovered my evil plot to keep him from amnestying the garbage contracts he signed by toying with him. The Cleveland Cavaliers cap machinations are the number one threat to the sustained success of future Lakers builds, and I did everything in my power to ensure Sap was out of options. Mwahhahahahaha
Anything you personally want to say to Sap?
If your entire offseason plans hinged on clearing these contracts off the books, maybe prepare some contingincies or make a stronger offer. I'm not in this league to do you favors, I'm trying to position my own team best for the future. And taking myself out of FA contention for this season and next season for 40k just wasn't doing much for me.
What was your plan when your trade block was posted and how has it changed since?
So when I cleared cap space towards the end of the season, I thought I had done enough to have space to full max guys coming off their rookie deals. I realized a couple days before FA that I was about a million short and had no one else I could or would want to clear out. I saw Justise Winslow get traded for nothing and thought maybe with the strength of this FA class, someone else might be willing to send me a good player for free to chase the stars. When the only offers I got were to take on depth-level players on multi-year deals, I decided I'd be better served trying to pluck one of the borderline max guys with the best deal I could offer at slightly below the max.
Do you have any remorse or feelings of guilt as a result of your behavior?
Not at all, I think my team is much better positioned now that it would've been if I took the deal. I signed Peyton Siva, who may not have gotten many other big money offers but who I thought looked really strong last season with his full complement of uppies still available. He's also a hidden gem, so I'll get to put +40 into a player who had elite production in limited minutes last season. I'm looking to get back to the mountaintop, and as they say, "a lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of sheep". Sap can bleat all he wants, but I don't owe him anything.
Do you think this will deter GMs from wanting to work with you in the future?
Definitely one GM. Cleveland is such a talent-rich franchise that I'm sure these sanctions will cripple my future for sim decades. The EU has already announced they're following suit with sanctions of their own, and Biden spent all weekend in Delaware drafting US sanctions. In times like these, I'm going to have to rely heavily on China (ank) to keep my trade active.
