How to Negotiate: The Laker Way
Listen we all know that being an Owner/GM of a team in TMBSL is not an easy job and there are lot of different facets to this role. One important aspect is negotiation. Today we are going to explore “How to Negotiate: The Laker Way.” We reached out to Handsome Pete, Owner/GM of the Los Angeles Lakers for comment and his people said they would get back to us tomorrow. So, we waited...and waited…and waited. Our deadline for the article was fast approaching and about 3 minutes prior to the deadline for the article Handsome Pete sent a letter to the publisher stating, “I didn’t feel like doing the interview.” Then it hit us, this is the Laker way to negotiate.
We then reached out to other owners in the league and all, but one refused to be identified. One unnamed GM said this “One sure fire way to make sure that a deal never gets done is to do one with the Lakers.” Another unnamed owner laughed when asked about negotiating with the Lakers “Oh, Pete? Ha ha he will lie right to your face. I don’t trust him one bit.” The one owner that would allow us to name him, Sapular, owner/GM of the Cavs had this to say “Handsome Pete said that he would be willing to take on salary prior to day 1 of FA and that he would be making a decision closer to FA. I felt this was reasonable because if he doesn’t accept, I can just amnesty a guy. I then sat and waited…and waited and the amnesty deadline came and went. I thought to myself well that is on me, but Pete will let me know soon so I can make other arrangements. Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock time went by, and the FA hour was fast approaching. I then texted in an hour before FA, and he has read receipts on this text messages, so he read it but did not respond. In a last-ditch effort, I replied to Handsome Pete’s original notification on how he was going to take on Pre-Day 1 salary. Only to be me with a “lol, I didn’t like the offer, sorry”.”
The story came to life. THIS is the Laker way to negotiate. Do it in bad faith, don’t communicate and then tell the other parties to “Suck it!” Friends this is how you create a team with the potential to be a mini dynasty and only come up with two championships. Mind you, we have not won anything in The Land and would love two TMBSL Championships, but one thing is for sure WHEN the Cavs do get theirs, the will get it the right way, the honest way.
