We have completed 16 seasons of TMBSL 6.0 and I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the best offenses in the history of the league.
6.0 League Rating (Points Per 100 Possessions) Evolution
We can see that after 10 straight increases, the league rating finally peaked at 126.8 in 3011. The number then saw small decreases for four consecutive seasons in 3011, 3012, 3013, and 3014 before ticking back up a bit in 3015. What does this mean? There could be a few reasons for why league rating finally topped out in 3010. We may have just reached a limit in the software for how successful offenses can be and we weren't going to see the league get much higher than that. We may have reached the peak of how good offenses can be with the way we build our players + everyone being upgraded. Another thought I have though is that around 3010 is when we saw the number of human run teams really start to drop off as numerous GMs quit and were replaced with CPU run teams. Those teams are generally garbage (as we can see from their win totals) and are giving large amount of minutes to subpar offensive players who normally wouldn't be seeing minutes in TMBSL if all teams were human run. Could the impact of 5-6 CPU teams be what caused the league rating to finally tick down some? It's possible.
All team names below are links to the team page so you can remember who was on the team.
16 Most Dominant Offenses in 6.0 History
The four most dominant offenses of all time were TMBSL Champions. The 3003 Cougars were the most dominant offense that did not win the title, instead losing in 6 games in the 2nd round to the Brooklyn Nets. Overall, 6 of the 16 most dominant offenses belong to teams that won the TMBSL Championship in their season which is a pretty high number.
Here are where the other 9 Champions rank (out of 444 human controlled teams):
In what probably isn't too surprising, the 3007 Suns were the least dominant offense to win the Championship, ranking only 192nd out of the 444 human controlled teams in our 16 seasons of TMBSL Six. The 3006 Chaps at 134th were the only other champion to rank outside the top 100.
16 Best ORtg in 6.0 History (Most Points Per 100 Possessions)
This one is a little less interesting with the top 8 seasons just consisting of the Knicks and Lakers in seasons 3010 or later since offense has continued to get better as the league has evolved. However, the top 8 seasons of recent Knicks and Lakers teams still include 4 champions. We once again see that 6 of the 16 offenses who scored the most points per 100 possessions went on to become TMBSL Champions. The "oldest" team to make this list was the 3005 Cougars with every other team in the top 16 coming from 3008 or later.
Here are the ranks of the remaining champions (out of 444 total user controlled teams):
Here, we see the 3001 Grizzlies were the lowest ranked Champion in terms of Raw ORtg. The 3000 Mavericks, the most dominant offense of all time only rank as the 127th most efficient offense in 6.0. This highlights how much better offensively the league as a whole has become. But back in 3000 and 3001, these were very strong offenses.
16 Best Pts/TSA Seasons in 6.0 History
The interesting takeaway here for me is that we still find 6 Champions in the top 16, including 3 of the top 4 (and 5 of the top 8), but we also find 5 teams who lost in the 1st round of the playoffs, far more than either of the ORtg categories. ORtg is more all encompassing than P/TSA which just focuses on shooting ability and ignores things like turnovers and rebounding.
16 Highest 3 Point Rates in 6.0 History
Three point rate clearly has much less correlation to team success as only 1 of the top 16 was a Champion and that team ranks 15th in 3Pr. We see that 6 of the top 16 lost in the 1st Round of the Playoffs and one team even missed the Playoffs completely. Only 2 of the top 16 reached the Finals and only 4 of the top 16 reached the Conference Finals.
16 Highest FT Rates in 6.0 History
FT Rate is more of a mixed bag. We can see there are 3 champions including 2 of the top 3 FT Rate seasons of all time (but those were both of the Lakers titles). All four of the top 4 FT rate seasons advanced to at least the Conference Finals, as well. However, there were still 4 of the top 16 who lost in the 1st round and another team who missed the playoffs completely so a high FT rate doesn't guarantee team success in the postseason.
One interesting note is that 4 of the top 16 FT rate seasons in 6.0 history were all by West teams in 3014. The conference must have been a foulfest that season or the refs had super tight whistles all season long.
