Most teenage kids continue to grow as they progress through high school, adding an inch or two and generally getting a bit taller. Not Jonathan Isacc, he grew a whopping 6 inches from his freshman year to his senior year. Going from a lanky shooting guard and morphing into an extremely lanky stretch power forward.
Isaac enters the draft as a prototypical 3 and D type player but boasts some nice offensive upside. On defense, he has tremendous length and quick feet that allow him to successfully guard a number of positions. He has fast hands and can be a pest against slower opponents. In addition, his 7’1 wingspan helps make him a good shot blocker as he can elevate against most opponents.
His size and length also helps him when rebounding. He loves to crash the glass and that should continue at the next level as he was a rebounding force in college. However, scouts all agree that he has not yet grown into his body and will need some time to mature. It will also help him to get into a pro level weight lifting program as he will need to add strength.
Isaac’s background as a shooting guard serves him well on the offensive end. He has sound mechanics and should be able to stretch the floor. He is not going to be a 40-plus percent shooter from three-point land right away, but he has clearly established himself as a threat from outside.
Inside he can be an effective scorer but will need to add some moves to his repertoire. He was able to control the low post in college at times but often struggled against bigger, stronger competition. Too often he settles for drop back jumpers when it would be better to continue driving. He also needs to get stronger hands as he bobbles too many passes.
Ultimately Isaac’s offensive skillset best translates as a small forward but scouts agree that his destined position in the pros is as power forward. He can be a highly effective 3 and D player right away and has the potential to become a versatile scorer. As mentioned previously, he is still finding his body and with continued bulk and strength he could become a more consistent threat to score in the post, and that will determine how good he becomes.
