In an unprecedented demonstration of unity from a league that has rarely displayed it, TMBSL's remaining 20-something general managers agreed during an emergency meeting not to select any available players in the league's upcoming contraction draft.
"It's been a rough season," admitted one anonymous Eastern Conference GM. "We've lost multiple general managers for a variety of reasons and don't currently have anyone in line to take over."
Both the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat will be contracted this offseason and their players are subject to go through contraction waivers following the playoffs. A number of all-stars and all-league talents - Yao Ming, Dale Ellis, Chris Webber, Jamal Mashburn, and others - would become available to teams with the necessary cap space.
"The league's general managers agree that the current contraction waiver process is not in the best interest of league health," said Utah Jazz general manager Fason Voorhees. "A few years back, the Jazz didn't select anyone in our expansion draft. I made that promise as soon as I was named GM and I stuck to it, which is something that I believe can inspire the rest of the league to come together in a similar but different situation."
Per the league rulebook, "Any player not claimed (in the contraction draft) will become a free agent." At that point, players would be free to sign with whichever team they please, rather than be forced to relocate to a city with no say in the outcome.
It is possible that one or two players available in the contraction process would exceed the league's overall capacity and therefore be murdered or forced to continue their careers overseas.
"That's an unfortunate risk we'll have to take to ensure we do what's in the best interest of the league," said an anonymous but very handsome Western Conference GM. "Ideally we'd send some of these other irrelevant geezers who went unsigned all season and clearly have no place in this league packing, but that may not be possible due to that g** d*** player's union."
