With the 3009 draft class approaching free agency this offseason, I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at the top 15 picks and use the benefit of hindsight to get them right. Boy was I wrong! But since I did the work, you have to relive this crappy draft along with me. Bon Appetit!
1. Original pick: Atlanta Hawks - Derrick Coleman PF 6'10'' 230 23 B+ C, C+ C+ B, A, Syracuse
Redraft pick: Derrick Coleman PF 6'10'' 230 23 B+ C, C+ C+ B, A, Syracuse
No surprise here. Derrick Coleman's combination of ready-made grades and sky-high potential made him the easy #1 pick at the time, and by any metric he's been by far the best player. He won finals MVP his rookie season, stepping up in Antonio Gates's absence to lead the Hawks to the title. He's been a double-digit winshare player every season of his career, and was second only to Kyrie in the category last season. DC is one of the best young talents in the league.
2. Original pick: Boston Celtics - Dennis Scott SF 6'8'' 229 22 B- B, C, C, C, C, Georgia Tech
Redraft pick: Cedric Ceballos SF 6'6'' 190 21 A- C- D, C, C+ A, Cal State Fullerton
Dumptime began his brief return to sim league with a bit of a headscratcher at 2. Most people felt Ceballos was the clear standout, but after seeing some scouts Dump went against the grain and picked Dennis Scott. While Dennis has been solid (more on him later), Ceballos has proven to be the better player through the first 4 years of their careers. Maybe if Dump makes this pick and gets to team Ceballos with JBC and Deron Williams, he might still be around. Either way, I think Ceballos is worthy of the 2nd spot.
3. Original pick: Toronto Raptors - Cedric Ceballos SF 6'6'' 190 21 A- C- D, C, C+ A, Cal State Fullerton
Redraft pick: Dee Brown PG 6'1'' 160 21 C+ C+ C+ C, D- C, Jacksonville University
Having been robbed of their original choice, the Toronto Raptors can take solace in the fact that they are getting a scoring machine here with Dee Brown. The #FreeDee movement should be in full effect, as Dee Brown is itching to get out of Nick Van Exel's shadow and be a lead guard, and would likely challenge for scoring titles right away. In Toronto, Dee could thrive as the MAN and shoot to his heart's content. A match made in heaven.
4. Original pick: Washington Bullets (from Amigos) - Lionel Simmons SF 6'7'' 210 21 B- C, C, C+ C+ C, La Salle
Redraft pick: Bo Kimble SG 6'4'' 190 24 B, B- C, C+ D+ C, Loyola Marymount
The Bullets were looking for a wing here to pair with Joe Alexander. Lionel Simmons has been effective, but Bo has been the better player thusfar in their careers. Kimble made a big splash in the league, starting out on fire for the red hot Clippers before being dealt in midseason for Michael Beasley. Since then, he's been a key piece for a mid-tier Magic team. We'll see what happens with him once he hits FA this offseason, but I'm guessing he still has value for a lot of teams.
5. Original pick: Philadelphia 76ers (from Pipers) - Kendall Gill SG 6'5'' 195 22 B, C, C+ B+ C- C, Illinois
Redraft pick: Antonio Davis PF 6'9'' 215 22 B- C- D+ B- C+ B, Texas-El Paso
Antonio Davis has quietly put together a very solid career in Phoenix. He's not the most efficient scorer but he's not bad, and he provides some good rebounding and defense as well. The Sixers famously held up the draft for 2 days at this pick only to wind up with the biggest disappointment in the top-5. Antonio Davis would've given Bankz a better piece to build around after selling off his championship core.
6. Original pick: Los Angeles Clippers (from Timberwolves) - Bo Kimble SG 6'4'' 190 24 B, B- C, C+ D+ C, Loyola Marymount
Redraft pick: Dave Jamerson SG 6'5'' 190 23 C+ B- C- C, C, C, Ohio University
The Clippers, no longer able to Know Bo, reach all the way down to the 2nd round to select Knicks standout Dave Jamerson. In this scenario, I'm treating this as if Jamerson still got his mentor uppies, but in reality he would not have gotten picked this high without those mentor bonuses. Still, Jamerson is up there with Luther Head, Andrew Goudelock, and Daequon Cook as standout non-profile SGs (non-Chenky Baby/Ron Perry edition). Characteristically, he had a great jumper coming in, takes care of the ball, and gives you decent rebounding for a 2-guard. Dirt was running inside focus at the time so this might not have been the best fit, but there's no chance Jamerson falls out of the top-10 in a redraft.
7. Original pick: Charlotte Bobcats (from Heat) - Gary Payton PG 6'4'' 180 22 B, C, A- B, D+ C, Oregon State
Redraft pick: Lionel Simmons SF 6'7'' 210 21 B- C, C, C+ C+ C, La Salle
Gary Payton was one of my first loves in sim league, the centerpiece of the first competitive team I built in 4.0. It pains me to see him so bad, but bad he is. Payton's production would've been ok with league average turnovers, but unfortunately he has never gotten close. Instead of Payton's disappointment, Odin gets a so-so wing. Simmons has been decent-to-above average pretty much across the board and reminds me a bit of Wilson Chandler. Both players are useful pieces who are probably best suited as a back-up rather than a starter. Is it a bad sign that my 6th and 7th best players in the class are back-up wings? MAYBE!
8. Original pick: Phoenix Suns - Antonio Davis PF 6'9'' 215 22 B- C- D+ B- C+ B, Texas-El Paso
Redraft pick: Dennis Scott SF 6'8'' 229 22 B- B, C, C, C, C, Georgia Tech
The slide for Dennis Scott ends here. 3-D was contracted and sent to the Amigos this offseason, and was dealt to the Clippers for a 1.7 almost immediately. He's making an impact with the resurgent Clippers and may prove to be more valuable than I have him ranked here. Ultimately, Scott is a capable scorer but like Lionel Simmons is probably best suited to a 6th man role.
9. Original pick: Portland Trail Blazers (from Bucks) - Tyrone Hill PF 6'9'' 240 22 C+ C- D+ C, B- C, Xavier
Redraft pick: Tate George PG 6'5'' 190 22 C, C, A- C- C- C, UConn
Tate George has had quite an eventful career. He was amnestied before ever playing a game for the Chaps, who then resigned him after he failed to be claimed off waivers. He then bounced around a little before landing with the Bobcats last season, where he improbably won Finals MVP over several much more deserving players. George is a quality point guard who can run the show and won't hurt you in any major area. He finds himself on the bench again this season, but he's playing meaningful minutes for one of the best teams in the league, so that's enough for me.
10. Original pick: Minnesota Timberwolves (from Bobcats) - Terry Mills PF 6'10'' 230 22 B, C, C, C+ C, C, Michigan
Redraft pick: Felton Spencer C 7'0'' 265 22 B- C, D- C- C, C, Louisville
The Pipers big man is another often-overlooked player, probably because of how bad his defense and rebounding are. But there are few bigs in the league who are as efficient scoring the ball as Felton, and if he could ever get enough minutes he'd be among the league leaders in points per game. He's always going to be a one-trick pony, but he does his one trick slightly better than Terry Mills, so the Timberwolves would take him here.
11. Original pick: Milwaukee Bucks (from Knicks) - Chris Jackson PG 6'1'' 162 21 B, B- C, C- D- C, LSU
Redraft pick: Terry Mills PF 6'10'' 230 22 B, C, C, C+ C, C, Michigan
Speaking of Mr. Mills, he slips just one spot down to 11th. He is really a very similar player to Felton Spencer, except he's slightly worse across the board. Fewer points and rebounds per 36 with a worst P/TSA. Mills can get buckets though, and should continue to bounce around as an MLE/LLE level player for several years. The player originally taken with this pick, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf nee Chris Jackson, might be the worst pick in this draft. His scoring showed promise but Abdul-Rauf turns it over like Jay Cutler in his prime. I'll be surprised if he isn't eaten by the software soon.
12. Original pick: Pittsburgh Pipers (from Magic) - Felton Spencer C 7'0'' 265 22 B- C, D- C- C, C, Louisville
Redraft pick: Elden Campbell C 6'11'' 215 22 B- C- C- C+ C, C, Clemson
The Pipers lose out on Felton, so let's give them a big who is much worse at scoring but can bring it on the defensive end. Heebs has hidden Elden Campbell since his rookie season, giving him very few minutes in the hope that he resigns for cheap or that other GMs don't notice and he can ink a very team-friendly deal in the offseason. I see through the ruse though, and I'm here to tell you that this guy is not bad. He isn't a very strong rebounder and is slightly below average for efficiency, but he can block some shots. Keep an eye on him for the future.
13. Original pick: Chicago Stags - CONTRACTED
Redraft pick: Tyrone Hill PF 6'9'' 240 22 C+ C- D+ C, B- C, Xavier
CONTRACTED may be the better pick here, as there's not much left to get excited about in this class. Tyrone Hill is like Felton Spencer and Terry Mills, except worse at scoring and better at rebounding. He's been a career back-up in Portland who's fallen further out of the rotation and will probably have some trouble finding significant minutes on any decent team.
14. Original pick: Carolina Cougars (from Bullets) - Dee Brown PG 6'1'' 160 21 C+ C+ C+ C, D- C, Jacksonville University
Redraft pick: Kendall Gill SG 6'5'' 195 22 B, C, C+ B+ C- C, Illinois
The Cougars are the big losers of the redraft, losing a budding superstar in Dee Brown and replacing him with a draft bust in Kendall Gill. Interestingly, Gill has found his way to the Cougars this season, signing for the MLE after going unclaimed in contraction waivers. The B+ display grade defense should be enough to keep him in rotations, and his offense has been passable in VERY limited minutes. He may wind up being a quality rotational player, but the bet here is that he'll revert to the level of production we saw from him in Philly.
15. Original pick: Vancouver Grizzlies (from Trail Blazers) - Steve Scheffler C 6'9'' 250 23 B, C- D+ C, C+ C, Purdue
Redraft pick: Negele Knight PG 6'1'' 175 23 C, C, B+ C, D, C, Dayton
I've never heard of Steve Scheffler. I didn't know who Negele Knight was either until last offseason, but JHB has become very good at plucking point guards from obscurity and turning them into quality caretakers. He signed the former 2nd round pick Knight last year, got him up to 85 jumper and 100 handles, and now he's a solid PG for an inside focused team looking for a point guard who doesn't need to do much besides take care of the ball.
3009 Re-Draft
1. Original pick: Atlanta Hawks - Derrick Coleman PF 6'10'' 230 23 B+ C, C+ C+ B, A, Syracuse
