A California boy, Johnson has long been in the public high while staring at the fame Mater Dai High school for 4 years. He helped lead the Monarchs to 4 straight state championships before heading off to Arizona for his lone year of college. Starting the entire season as a freshman, Johnson was named First Team All-Pac 12 and Freshman of the year before declaring for the TMBSL draft.
Johnson's best attributes coming into the league are tied to his size and athletic ability. He has good strength for his size and is a great athlete, able to move around the floor effortlessly. This shows up most on the defensive end where he ties his athletic abilities with a good defensive awareness. He finished with an impressive 1.5 steals per game his freshman year and scouts anticipate that to translate well to the next level. He also averaged .4 blocks per game, and while that isn't an earth shattering number, the fact he can occasionally get you a block on the wing is an added bonus.
Offensively, Johnson will need to put in some work to improve his efficiency. He struggled with finishing at the rim in college, which is surprising considering his size and strength. However, he has good shooting form and can hit open looks when given the chance and can stretch out to the 3pt line a little as well. If he can learn to take contact better and finish, his offensive game can really explode.
Johnson will be a good, not great rebounder, as he enters the league. He is always willing to crash the glass on the offensive to snag any errand shots, posting one of the best offensive rebounding percentages in the entire draft class. With increased growth and natural strength, it's possible he rounds out into a plus rebounder.
Johnson will need to work on his decision making at the next level as it was a weakness for him in college. Too often he gets flustered in the paint and makes an ill-fated pass attempt. With increased size and speed he will need to work on making the right plays, and passing earlier if he does intend to pass.
Johnson should have some positional flexibility which scouts are extremely excited about. Surprisingly, his lone year in college was his first true season playing on the wing. He mostly played PF in high school due to his size and strength and is just scratching the surface at the wing position. Scouts love his intangibles as he has a fiery attitude and is willing to do whatever it takes to be successful.
