Good morning GMs and welcome to our round table. Odin, BK, Tim, Fason, Pete, and I spent some time this offseason discussing topics that may be interesting to you. We hope you enjoy!
1. We recently finished the first decade of TMBSL. If you had to construct an 8-man rotation across all seasons, what players (from which year) would you use? 2 PGs, 3 wings, 3 bigs.
TimPig
Big: Bojan Dubljevic (3003)
Big: Andrew Bynum (3011)
Big: Patrick Ewing (3011)
Wing: Antonio Gates (3008)
Wing: Dale Ellis (3003)
Wing: Cenk Akyol (3009)
Point: Chris Paul (3004)
Point: Theodoros Papaloukas (3004)
A few names are obvious in my mind - Bojan when his defense really seemed to improve and he got over the one block per game hump. CP3's rookie season was outstanding and just beat out Kyrie due to slightly better defense and rebounding. TMBSL 6.0's leader in win shares - Antonio Gates - needed a place on this list and 3008 was a good balance of scoring, rebounding, and lack of turnovers. I wanted Theo on this team because every team he's on seems to be a contender and he was averaging 7 rebounds per game as a point guard in 3004. Chenky Baby's 3009 was outstanding when he averaged 2.5 steals per game and he'd would really add a defensive presence to the perimeter. Bynum's most recent season was incredible as well as he added above average offense to elite defense, rebounding, and turnovers. Dale Ellis' 3003 was the second most efficient season we've ever seen and he added some extra rebounding, which is why I picked it over his 3002 (the most efficient season in 6.0 history). I have a feeling Ewing will stay the same or regress, but his rookie season was very, very good. Overall, I think this team has a strong blend of scoring at all levels, rebounding from the places you would and wouldn't expect, and no major turnover issues in the years selected.
BK
Kyrie, Theo
Luke Maye, Doug Wrenn, Wayne Estes
Moalla, Breshers, Yao
Pete
PG: 3008 Kyrie Irving - The ascendent MVP season where Kyrie took CP3's crown as best PG in TMBSL. Maybe not the best fit with the rest of the roster but top flight PGs are very hard to come by, so I'm not passing one up.
PG: 3004 Theodoros Papaloukas - A more natural fit for the inside focus of my squad, Theo has been remarkably consistent over his surprisingly long career. I took the '04 vintage because he led the Chaps to the best record in the west and the title.
Wing: 3004 Clyde Drexler - Clyde is maybe the most complete all-around wing in the league, providing defense, scoring and rebounding at elite levels. 3004 was one of his best offensive seasons and his second-most win shares in a season, and his turnovers were somewhat under control as well.
Wing: 3003 Antonio Gates - The 3003 software MVP was on another level this season. I believe this season Gates put up more triple-doubles than Manute Bol had double-doubles, and he and Drexler would combine that year to be the best wing duo of all time.
Wing: 3003 Dale Ellis - Going to wrap up the inside-focus wings with Dale Ellis, also from 3003. Ellis is an efficiency monster, putting up insane Pts/TSA throughout his career. I'm taking the version of Dale from the 70-win Sixers championship team, where he had his strongest rebounding year to go with one of his best scoring seasons.
Big: 3000 Moala Tautuaa - The all-time leading season in WS. Sure, the league was a little weaker, so Win Shares were a bit inflated across the board, but all respect due to Moala for putting together an all-time season. He's going to be distributing and scoring with ruthless efficiency and count on his other front court mates to pick up the slack on D and rebounding.
Big: 3010 Yao Ming - Yao doesn't need to be a focal point or scoring option to make an impact. He's a great rebounder and provides decent shotblocking, all while scoring with top-flight efficiency. Give me rookie year Yao.
Big: 3011 Andrew Bynum - 5x DPOY, the best defense and rebounding combination of any big we've seen in the league. This most recent season was Bynum's best, as his offense was good enough and everything else was just as good as it's ever been. No turnovers, league leading in rebounding and shot blocking. Give me the big fella please.
Heebs
Kyrie (3008)
Demetrius Mitchell (3000)

Fason
I am only going to pick the players that I've seen in my few years here, as I'm too lazy to go back through the league's history. And I'm not going to choose Kyrie, NVE or CP3 because those are boring answers and because I want to mash people inside.
Just pick whichever year these dudes had their most win shares.
C: Yao Ming / Andrew Bynum / Andrew Bynum
PF: Shawn Kemp Jr / Andrew Bynum / Andrew Bynum
SF: Clyde Drexler / Danny Granger / Danny Granger
SG: Antonio Gates / Danny Granger / Danny Granger
PG: Theodoros Papaloukas / Deron Williams / Theodoros Papaloukas
Kemp seems to be the best scoring big in the league, Bynum the best defender & Ming the most well -rounded.
Gates, Drexler & Granger are the do it all wings which are my favorite players in sim.
Theodoros is a proven winner and defensive stopper. Williams will effectively stay out of the during his 12 minutes a game.
2. We're got another decade coming up. If you had to select an 8-man rotation from the players currently in the league based ON HOW THEY WILL PLAY IN 3020, who would you select?
Odin
kyrie irving
terry porter
tobias harris
michael beasley
joe dumars
patrick ewing
jabari parker
yao ming
Fason
Since Dominique Wilkins and Sleepy Floyd aren't technically in the league yet, I am omitting them.
C: Patrick Ewing / Derrick Coleman / Derrick Coleman
PF: Yao Ming / Derrick Coleman / Derrick Coleman
SF: Caron Butler / Matt Barnes / Matt Barnes
SG: Joe Dumars / Matt Barnes / Matt Barnes
PG: Terry Porter / Jay Williams / Terry Porter
The bigs were really tough to choose, went with the three that seem to have the least flaws. I thought about Boozer and Karl Malone but they don't block shots. Considered Embiid but he rebounds like a bitch.
Wings were difficult to choose because frankly there aren't that many that look too good or don't have glaring flaws. Butler rebounds well and has had some big TCs. Dumars looks to be the best young two-way SG in the league. I don't know what the hell happened to Barnes this year after looking so good last year. Maybe he can't play anything but SF.
Williams is probably better right now, but I like Porter better long term which is why I made him the starter. There were some other young PGs that are currently running inside focused teams, but I figure they'll be pushed out by younger players in a few years.
TimPig
Big: Patrick Ewing
Big: Yao Ming
Big: Joel Embiid
Wing: Tobias Harris
Wing: Kawhi Leonard
Wing: Joe Dumars
Point: Kyrie Irving
Point: Junior Harrington
This part felt a lot harder than the last since we're looking ten years out. Since we haven't seen any of the most recent rookies I left them out, and I only picked guys who were 25 and under. I like the set of bigs as they all provide a pretty balanced offering, and starting point guard is locked in with Kyrie now that CP3 sucks. Harris has improved a ton during his first few years and is an excellent scorer who doesn't turn it over, rebounds well, and can play shooting guard. Kawhi is all defense and rebounding and doesn't hurt you offensively for the most part, and Dumars looks like a really balanced player. Second point guard was tough and felt like a homer pick, but he was the top win share point guard this past season who was currently under 25 after Kyrie.
BK
Kyrie, Byucks
Tobias Harris, Caron Butler, Kawhi
Embiid, Jokic, KAT
Heebs
Kyrie/Porter
Butler/Dumars/Harris
Ewing/Yao/Parker
Pete
PG: Kyrie Irving - Still reigning PG champ. MVP of the league for the foreseeable future.
PG: Dee Brown - putting up 5 WS in back-up minutes for the Cougs. I know he can thrive in the back-up role
Wing: Tobias Harris - hitting his prime, challenging for the mantle of best all-around wing.
Wing: Dominique Wilkins - a boy can dream, can't he?
Wing: Kawhi Leonard - I don't need him to shoot much, but he's going to do everything else great
Big: Joel Embiid - Best combination of offense and shotblocking
Big: Andrew Bynum - only one year left until Bynum forces BK to pay through the nose
Big: Yao Ming - For all the reasons mentioned in the previous answer.
3. We've lost some GMs recently. If you could pick a former GM (that has NOT GM'd in 6.0) to return, who would it be?
TimPig - There aren't a ton of GMs who haven't been a part of 6.0 that I got to know during 5.0 or the end of 4.0, so my list is pretty limited. Most were lame or quit before really doing much. The only one I can think of who was an active member at the end of 4.0 and early 5.0 who hasn't been a part of 6.0 at all that I can think of is Taco, so I guess I'll say him. He seemed to be an alright dude when it came to negotiating trades.
Heebs - KN for sure. Solid all around GM who gets the most out of minimal effort. Always good for a shout drop in. No toxicity at all. A+ GM.
Pete - My experience as a GM dates to 4.0. I think out of the 4.0 GMs who haven't been in 6.0, Dilworth had the most success. But I'd go with kn88, my DC compadre. KN wasn't the most active GM but he always got his stuff in on time and when he was in shout it was always a good time. Was a great presence in the league.
Odin - definitely 2poor. he showed mild interest in returning prior to 6.0 so he may be a possibility tbh.
BK - dbl the dude is funny and seems mostly harmless
Fason - Full disclosure, I messaged SugarShaun, KN and RW the other day about coming back to the league. Shaun signed up, KN said he'll be back once work settles down and nothing from RW. Not going to say any of them.
When he's full engaged 2Poor is great to have in the league, but that likely will never happen since he's a parent of two now. I'll say Buster because he's a great personality, good GM and I think it would mean Bruns would come back too.
4. There are a few GMs who have a foot out the door. If you could use retirement insurance on one of them, who would it be?
Fason - I'm sorry Heebs but this is a really stupid question because there is only one logical answer and that is dirty. He is a one man economy stimulator with his individual moves, then there are the ripple effects that his moves always cause.
BK - dirt but the insurance would fail to work anyway :(
Odin - jhb. good guy, good gm. he always has a competitive team when he wants to and usually has a lot of success with that. bad playoff luck sucks but also he did recently win a title. good guy, good gm.
TimPig - JHB if he's included in that group. Good guy, good GM and when he's engaged he writes articles, helps with board duties, and is a good shout presence. It'd be unfortunate if he departed.
Heebs - Dirt. I already miss his presence in shout. I feel like it's a matter of time until he resigns, which sucks.
Pete - I would want to preserve Dirt. I think he's definitely the closest to quitting (see his comment on the JBC trade), but an engaged Dirt is vital to sim league. His compulsion to make deals can create daisy chains of massive trades and player movement that help stoke interest in the league and keeps things fresh for everyone.
5. Majic continues to complain about the format of the draft. Do you think he's a bad GM or just a little bitch?
TimPig - Majic and I got into it daily in 5.0, so he wouldn't be surprised to hear me say that he's both a bad GM and a little bitch. The two aren't mutually exclusive, but it is hard to be both so kudos to Majic for pulling it off.
Fason - Some people simply don't like change and refuse to evolve. I've only seen Majic complain one time so not sure how long this has been going on. Also not sure how much success he had in 5.0 with the varying draft systems. But to answer your question I will say bitch.
Odin - some people are just relentless and he relentlessly opposes the wheel. maybe he'll see the light one of these days but in 60 sim seasons it hasn't happened yet.
BK - Definitely both. Majic loves bitching about rules he doesnt like in shout, mostly he has decent points. But he's also not the best GM but isn't the worst either.
Heebs - Hard to argue with anyone answering both, but I think he's a decent GM.
Pete - Majic is a GM whose moves constantly confound me, and they work out much more often than I would expect. He's entitled to not like the wheel format but I think he's in the minority, especially as most of the other wheel detractors have already bounced from the league.
6. If you could unilaterally make one change to sim league, what would it be?
Odin - franchise upgrades. a goal to work toward long term would be nice. additionally it would promote even more article activity due to the need to amass an incredible amount of currency to purchase said upgrades.
TimPig - I would never have a rookie start below 60 potential unless they were regarded as someone who had no ability to get better, which I'd expect might be like 2-3 guys ever. I'm no expert on growth or training camp tiers, but one of the more entertaining aspects of the league for me are guys unexpectedly seeing major growth. It feels like that happens rarely as it currently stands, and it seems like most non-profile guys getting built with such low potential would be a contributing factor.
Pete - I would make amnesties more difficult to attain, or maybe add a cool-off period to prevent people from using them as frequently as they do. To me, part of the skill of sim league is the balance between building the best team you can and managing your cap for the future. The ease of access to contract amnesties takes this element out of the picture for anyone willing to spend the dollars. If I can get out of jail free just by selling some uppies, it's probably too easy to do.
BK - i would have all the power and none of the work
Heebs - I would put an inside upgrade cap (15 max) in place to prevent people putting +30 into every SF.
Fason - It's still too early for me to say there needs to be one sweeping change made so I will give you a few small tweaks.
a. I'd like to see the inside cap on SGs be raised a smidge. We have some good SGs, but I don't think any of them are worth a max contract because they are all so similar and that blows when it comes to team building.
b. While I like that you can use an amnesty as many times as you can afford, it should probably be more expensive, maybe 100k. The 50k amnesty seems to have killed cap management.
c. I still don't like scouting and think it could get boring having the option to know every single attribute. I'd like to see a cap on the amount of attributes you can scout per player, for example you can only pick 5 per player.
7. College football season is coming up - what is your CFB Playoff prediction?
Pete - Same as it ever was: Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State
Fason - Bama, Clemson, Ohio State & Oklahoma
The first three seem like locks barring disastrous injuries. Maybe Georgia or Notre Dame sneak into the fourth spot to get slaughtered by Bama in the 1/4 matchup.
TimPig - Alabama - Because they're Alabama
Oklahoma - Arguably the best QB in college football
Clemson - Because they're Clemson and I think DJ is really, really good
Ohio State - Crazy depth if the QB situation is stable
Odin - Bama, Miami, Ohio State, Notre Dame
BK - West Virginia, Alabama, Penn State, Oregon State
Heebs - Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame
