Mikan was an event that was constructed and not merely born. Mikan was cut from the freshman team at Joliet (Ill.) Catholic High School back in the days when big men were considered too awkward to excel at the offensive end — especially one who took the floor wearing glasses. Mikan enters as one of the largest bigs from his generation and he looks to truly transcend the game of sim league basketball.
Working tirelessly during his time at DePaul Mikan has developed into one of the best 2 ways bigs Sim League has seen yet. Defensively Mikan is a force as he blends his quick feet with his towering size, able to block shots almost at will. He is able to use his length to stay in front of any big man and should be an immediate force on that end.
Offensively, Mikan again excels as he uses his size and agility to his advantage. He is one of the best big men to run the floor and is able to finish with force. He is difficult to defend in the paint and can deploy a lethal hook shot over almost anyone.
Great offensively and great defensively, what could be left for him to dominate? Oh yea, rebounding! Mikan’s length leads to a lot of easy rebounds as he is able to easily navigate around the paint and snag boards. He effortlessly moves around, and sometimes over, players to rebound the ball. This results in easy put backs or helps lead to a quick transition to offense.
He has solid shooting form as he averaged 77% from the FT line his senior year. He wont have any form of range, but ultimately that is not the style Mikan likes to play. Mainly his shooting is solely done from the free throw line and scouts have no concerns with that.
A couple nitpicks that scouts have is regards to his age, competition level and frame. He is not quite the oldest player in the class but does enter the draft as an older entry. This limits his growth potential as he is mostly a ready made prospect. Additionally, he has great length and quickness but scouts agree that he likely needs to add some strength. Most scouts think he has “functional” strength for the next level but if he truly wants to become a legendary player he will need to put in some work in the weight room.
Scouts are also curious to see how he matches up now that he will be playing with guys his same size. The biggest question on his dominance could be that this is his first test against players who can match his size, length and strength.
