GM Ward
Draft: One thing is very clear after creation draft and that is Ward is taking a wait and see approach to start off 6.0 campaign. He traded out of both rounds 1 and 2 before finally selecting SG Bootsy Thornton in the third. Thornton appears to be a solid player but at 29 years old and on an expiring deal, it is hard to see what Ward has planned for the potential all star’s future. The rest of the Warriors draft was littered with expiring deals to keep the powder dry for next year’s free agency.
Grade: C-
Assets: 3001 Warriors 1st, 3001 Clippers 1st, 3001 Warriors 2nd, 3002 Warriors 1st, 3002 Warriors 2nd, 3003 Warriors 1st, Pacers 3003 1st, 3003 Warriors 2nd
Future: B
Prediction: By design the Golden State Warriors appear to be eyeing the 3002 draft as a time to put a contender together to compete for a Pacific title. One thing for certain, the team’s future lies in the hands of a capable GM who is no stranger to building title contending teams…it just will not be this season. Expect the Warriors to finish second to last in the division with a record of 22-60.
GM Dirt
Draft: Dirt picks up right where he left off from days of past. Dirt was put on earth for two things: fuck fat bitches and make trades, and he is all out of fat bitches. The Clippers were all the buzz the first round of creation draft when Dirty D traded future firsts to land picks 1.5, 1.14 and 1.26 to add to his pick at 1.14. And with that he has assembled what many consider to be the front runner for the 3000 season. Led by high scoring wings Hank Gathers and Antonella Riva as well as PG Pee Wee Kirkland, the Clippers 3000 game plan appears to be to just run the other teams off the court. As great as his first 3 picks were, the pick that really set his team up as the team to beat was selecting PF Kyle Hines at 1.26. The early season favorite for DPOTY brings the hard-nosed veteran defensive leadership that is needed on championship teams.
Grade: A+
Assets: 3001 Clippers 2nd, 3002 Clippers 2nd
Future: A
Prediction: Dirt has done a fantastic job of putting a championship contender on the court for the next few seasons. But at what cost? He’s traded away his next 3 firsts included 1.2 3 years from now. Luckily, he’ll have two more first rounders open up soon to be able to add to his talented squad. I expect the Clippers to battle with the Grizzlies for the division (66-16) , make it to the finals, where they will be crowned the first champions of 6.0.
GM Tyler
Draft: Part of a three-way team trade with Bobcats and Timberwolves that left them without a first in creation draft but netting a first in the 3002 draft. Although we can’t be quite sure, because I’m still not sure if anyone can figure out what was exactly traded. With his 2nd round pick Tyler selected Josh Peppers who should be in contention for the leagues scoring title. Outside of Peppers, the draft reeks of selections that lead me to assume that minimal effort or thought was put into the building of this roster.
Grade: D
Assets: 3001 Lakers 1st, 3001 Lakers 2nd, 3002 Lakers 1st, 3002 Knicks 1st, 3002 Lakers 2nd, 3002 Bobcats 2nd, 3003 Lakers 1st, 3003 Lakers 2nd
Future: D+
Prediction: Doesn’t bold well for the Lakers, however, should still be able to manage some wins against some teams who purposefully built worse teams. Long days ahead for Lakers fans as they yearn for a GM that will give a fuck. Fourth place finish with a record of 24-58.
GM Majic
Draft: Most teams in the Pacific division decided to either build a title contender now or sell off and look to the future. GM Majic did neither. He sat where he was, took best player available, perhaps wanting to see how things shape out before committing one way or another. This could end up being the best strategy, no one knows. The Blazers successes or failures starts with their wings Raymond Lewis and Irwin Dambrot. Lewis will bring a scoring potential that should see him as a top 10 scorer in the league. Dambrot compliments his running mate nicely by providing a defensive presence and low shooting demand albeit still good efficiency. Tyrone Davis and Roeland Schaftenaar round out a solid frontcourt and PG Quinten Rollins looks to play the roll of bus driver and distributor to Lewis.
Grade: B-
Assets: 3001 Trailblazers 1st, 3001 Trailblazers 2nd, 3002 Trailblazers 1st, 3002 Trailblazers 2nd, 3003 Trailblazers 1st, 3003 Trailblazers 2nd
Future: B
Prediction: Majic did perhaps the smartest thing you could do in not committing your roster one way or another until we actually see some games played. He’ll be rewarded this season with a solid roster, future assets intact, and possible playoff berth. Third place finish with a record of 48-34.
GM Irush
Draft: Irush and the Kings were the other Pacific team to stand pat, make their picks, and not mortgage the future in any way. Like many GMs returning after a long hard winter, it seems Irush might not be too sure to make of all the changes and isn’t entirely clear on what might be relevant anymore. With his first pick in the creation draft he selected what many feels was one of the worst picks in the first round with PG John Davis. What’s nice about Davis is his age and the scoring and the rate he’ll be doing so at. What’s bad about Davis is his turnovers and he is only under contract for one season. Luckily for Irush cap shouldn’t be an issue as his 2nd and 3rd rounders were also one year deals. Center Dino Meneghin should be an interesting player who puts up some good stats, but at 35 years old and 19 years experience, will this be his last season?
Grade: D
Assets: 3001 Kings 1st, 3001 Kings 2nd, 3002 Kings 1st, 3002 Kings 2nd, 3003 Kings 1st, 3003 Kings 2nd
Future: C-
Prediction: Davis and Dino should be enough to carry the Kings to a mid-pack divisional finish. The Kings are quite possibly one move away from being a playoff team in a weak Western Conference. My prediction is fourth in the division with a record of 40-42.
GM Timpig
Draft: Like Ward and the Warriors, GM Timpig decided to punt the creation draft in option of stockpiling for the future. In the process he was able to pick up 2 additional first for the 3001 draft as well as the Magic firsts in both 3002 and 3003. With no intentions of competing right away, the Supersonics plan appears to have been not tie up money long term and to take young guys that could potentially become something.
Grade: C-
Assets: 3001 Supersonics 1st, 3001 Mavericks 1st, 3001 Hawks 1st, 3001 Supersonics 2nd, 3002 Supersonics 1st, 3002 Magic 1st, 3002 Supersonics 2nd, 3003 Supersonics 1st, 3003 Magic 1st, 3003 Supersonics 2nd
Future: B+
Prediction: By design, the Supersonics won’t be very good for at least this initial season. Fans take comfort that your team has assets and the most successful GM in 5.0 captaining your ship. Will battle for the worst in the division with the Warriors but will eventually finish in dead last with a record of 18-64.
GM Druce
Draft: To me, Druce and the Grizzlies quietly had one of the better drafts in the West. All the attention seemed to be on Dirt and the Clippers, but Vancouver was able to scoop up 5 picks in the first 50 picks. Lenny Cooke and Jason Capel is one of the better 1-2 punches in the league and they are only 24 and 27 respectively. In what I though was one of the better picks of the draft, Druce selected PG Pierluigi Marzorati to potentially be the starting PG until Retin Obasohan is ready to take over the reins. Joshua Smith, Sam Dower, and Jarvis Lang great a scary 3 headed monster at the Power Forward and Center positions.
Grade: A
Assets: 3001 Grizzlies 2nd, 3002 Grizzlies 1st, 3002 Grizzlies 2nd, 3003 Grizzlies 2nd
Future: A
Prediction: The Grizzlies have positioned themselves nicely at not only the tops of the Pacific Division, but also the Western Conference. The Clippers/Grizzlies should give us some great battles in the next years to come. Clippers appear to have the slight edge now, but which GM will be able to pull off the next move that could possibly lean the favor of their balance? It will be one of the more exciting races to watch this season. I think the Grizzlies will battle hard, but ultimately finish 2nd in the Pacific Division with a record of 63-19.
