Wilkins enters the league as one of the most decorated and exciting players we have yet to see. Scouts have been watching Wilkins since the early days of his high school career, earning McDonald’s All American Honors and starring in numerous showcase and all star games.
His success continued into college as he was named the SEC (SEC! SEC! SEC!) Mens’s Basketball Player of the Year in his final season, leading his team in points, blocks and rebounds.
In the pantheon of basketball’s greatest dunkers, Wilkins was a high flyer who electrified fans with his trademark windmill dunk and all-out effort. Whether going through someone or over them, the “Human Highlight Film”, as he came to be known, was an artist with grace, power, and purpose.
Wilkens contains everything you would want in a Small Forward from an athletic standpoint. He has a strong frame that can absorb impact, elite quickness and can jump over anyone. Given these traits, scouts believe he may be one of the most impressive scorers to enter the league. His strength and athletic ability allow him to dominate in the paint, providing great scoring touch around the rim and the ability to bring down rebounds on both ends of the floor.
Wilkins can be a force on the defensive end as well, his length and quickness allow him to match up with almost anyone. He is able to stay in front of his opponents and is able to anticipate well for timely steals. His anticipation also gets him in a good position to block a shot every now and then, which is rare for his position.
Scouts believe he will have some work to do with his shooting form as he shot only 64% from the line his last year in college. A little fine tuning and work with a shooting coach should help him round into good form. Scouts don't expect much of his scoring to come from outside the lane as it was never a focal point in his game and that's likely to continue.
Scouts are unsure of how much room Wilkins has to grow, but given his abilities already it shouldn't be a concern for any team drafting him. Wilkins is a ready-made player that should impact the league from the start.
