Draft Timeliness: Who's Fast, Who's Slow, and Overall Draft Time Stats (800 views)

With the draft moving at a snail's pace, it's given me plenty of time between picks to write an article.

It's also provided inspiration as multiple GMs have taken exceptionally long to make their selections - some intentionally, some not.

When I started this, I didn't expect it to take nearly as long as it did, but I ended up finding it interesting and I was motivated to keep going.

Before I get into the data, a few caveats with the information below:

- I looked at only the first round as people are obviously more concerned with the time it takes people to make their first round picks than their second-round picks

- I did not take into account overnight times. People are generally pretty responsive when I text them and most are aware that they're up before they go to bed.

- Traded picks were not taken into account. This would be exceedingly difficult to track and if you're the one who ended up making a pick but took a long time to trade for the pick before making it, I'll pin that on the one who actually made the pick.

- The time it takes to be delivered scouts can't possibly be tracked by me, so that's something that isn't factored in here.

- In some cases, people had back-to-back(-to-back) picks that were made in one post. For the purposes of their overall average, the second (and sometimes third) picks were timed at 0:00. However, I did not include these in the longest/shortest pick section of each draft.

- Eric and I have made a couple of list picks over the years. It's been like four total so I didn't break them out at all, but generally he's been quicker than most GMs in getting those lists posted so the lists helped out their overall average.

General process was as follows:

1. Calculate the length of each draft by comparing when Sim 8 was posted against when the final first round pick was made and the final second round pick was made
2. Convert total times to minutes in order to calculate averages
3. Export every draft to Excel
4. Manually copy and paste the time that every first round selection was made into Excel
5. Do a whole lot of column-splitting and finding and replacing to make the draft thread info workable in Excel
6. Calculate the time between each pick
7. Create a pivot table to get the average time each GM takes to make a first round selection

Now that all of that is out of the way, here's the fun part...

General Draft Info

First, a few fun facts...

- The single longest pick we've ever had was (unsurprisingly) Herby New Year! selecting Clyde Drexler after 105 hours and 13 minutes for the first pick in our first rookie draft. This was more than double the next longest pick. Fortunately, I'm sure plenty of good points were made in the process.

- If you don't count that pick for whatever reason, the next longest pick was Andrew Wiggins by Dirt at 48 hours and 32 minutes during the 3008 draft. It is the only other pick that has taken more than two full days to be made.

- The single quickest pick ever was by kc when he selected Cleanthony Early after a grueling 0 hours and 1 minute of consternation during the 3008 draft. Early went 28th overall.

- The 3007 Draft at just 7,666 minutes was, by far, the shortest draft we've had. It was 791 minutes - over 13 hours - shorter than the next shortest draft in 3003.

- The 3001 Draft was, again unsurprisingly, the longest draft at 9,904 minutes, or nearly a full week. If you remove the 6,313 minutes that it took Herby New Year! to pick Drexler, the draft took 3,591 minutes. Of course, timers were enacted at a much earlier selection than in any other draft.

- On average, first round selections across all eight drafts have taken 243 minutes, or about 4 hours. If the Clyde Drexler selection is removed, the average time per pick drops to 216.1 minutes per pick, or about 3.6 hours.

Fun Facts...

- On average, Herby New Year! takes nearly a full day to make each of his draft picks. If you remove his Clyde Drexler selection, his average draft time moves to 8 hours, 1 minute and 10 seconds. This would move him to second place with a comfortable cushion between himself and third place dump .

- If you remove Dirt 's Andrew Wiggins selection, his average time moves to 2 hours and 44 minutes. This would be good place him 19th - just a touch slower than Druce , but faster than pointyegg .

- dump has made just one first-round selection and kc has made just two, so their averages and rankings are liable to change quickly.

- Majic deserves a special shoutout as the only GM to come in under both the 30-minute and 15-minute averages. That's S-Tier draft efficiency right there.

- We've had three selections that took at least a full day to be made: Clyde Drexler (Herby New Year! ; 105 hours and 13 minutes); Andrew Wiggins (Dirt ; 48 hours and 32 minutes); and Brandon Bass (bankz ; 29 hours)

If we reduce Acie Earl's pick time from 19:20:00 to 0:00:05, your average time changes to 0:44:16 - 4th fastest.

Adding 19:20:00 to Indiana impressively improves Herb's average from 21:54:17 to 21:35:00 and still the slowest.

Trade posted on June 11 at 9:35 am. Trade accepted at 9:44am.

Pick made June 12 at at 12:52pm.

That means it took you 27 hours and 8 minutes from the time the trade was accepted to make your pick.

Subtract that from the 48 hours and 32 minutes that pick was on the clock and you’re left with 21 hours and 24 minutes that BA was on the clock, at which point you then decided to make the trade.

My adjusted time without Bass puts me as one of the quicker GMs in 6.0

I know I had two deals very close to getting done that delayed that pick.

Obviously the lack of funds that caused the inspiration for this article caused the second delay. And still i'm not the worst

The 51.7 hours that 1.5 took this year certainly will not help your average.
