Its never too early to complete a redraft, and with that in mind we wanted to look back on the 3005 Draft and complete a redraft.
We alternated picks, whoever made the pick has their comments first. Additionally, we only factored in the first 2 years of these players careers, mostly using the per 36 numbers from the 3006 season. The first 2 sims of the 3007 season were not a factor when we created this list.
Me and Sapular took slightly different approaches as we worked our way through but we did stick with Best Player Available and didn't factor in the teams roster.
Please read, enjoy, comment, criticize or get mad as that's the point.
1. Miami Heat
Original Pick - Chris Webber PF 6'9'' 245 20 B, C- C+ C+ C+ A, Michigan
Re-Draft Pick - Chris Webber
Sapular Comments: Webber has elite level stats. He is a double/double guy that also plays elite defense. His scoring, albeit a bit inefficient, he contributes on both ends of the floor and someone that you can build a team around
Majic Comments: Agree on this pick, easy choice as Webber looks to be a total package. You could nitpick on a couple small items but overall he is the best player in this draft.
2. Phoenix Suns
Original Pick - Anfernee Hardaway PG 6'7'' 195 21 C+ C, B- C, C, B, Memphis
Re-Draft Pick - Jamal Mashburn
Majic Comments: Penny is an outstanding player and 50% of the time I would take him #2 overall. However, I like Mashburn a little bit more based on his positional value. He scores at an impressive efficiency and gets you big time boards. He offers solid defense on the other end and while he might turn it over a bit, it's something I am OK with. Ultimately I think you can find a starting PG in other spots of the draft.
Sapular Comments: In looking at the roster I am even more confused by this pick. Mashburn is a very good wing and unless your team is built to run an outside offense a PG this high doesnt make much sense to me. With his current front court Mashburn would have been an amazing addition to and, in my opinion, made his other bigs that much better and he can play D.
3. Miami Heat (from Bucks)
Original Pick - Jamal Mashburn SF 6'8'' 240 20 B, C+ C, C, C, B, Kentucky
Re-Draft Pick - Vin Baker
Sapular Comments: While I think Duc got the best player in Webber, I do think that Baker would be a decent 2nd place as far as a PF goes. He scores very efficiently and is good on the defensive side of the ball. Also a very small drop off in offensive production. He is a very good 2nd place selection.
Majic Comments: Bit of a shock here with this pick, I personally think there are a couple better options on the board but do think Baker is a strong player. He scores really well and doesnt turn the ball over much at all. Ideally I would like to see him pull down more rebounds but it's workable. His defensive stats aren't the highest to this point, but who knows what his underlying attributes look like. Again, I would have put 2-3 guys above him on my big board but Baker is no slouch.
4. Los Angeles Clippers (from Magic)
Original Pick - Allan Houston SG 6'6'' 200 22 C, B+ C+ C- D+ B, Tennessee
Re-Draft Pick - Anfernee Hardaway
Majic Comments: Surprisingly Penny falls down to 4th in the redraft and if I were the Clippers I would be ecstatic. Penny can do it all for your team, he scores really well, plays strong defense and more than holds his own on the defensive end. His rebounds are a huge plus and while his TO’s are higher than you might like, it's something you can live with given all his other pluses. Again, outstanding value to get him here at #4.
Sapular Comments: Penny is an AMAZING pick up here. Penny is an amazing facilitator and someone that can score when needed. He shoots very well and can fit in any offense. He would also be a fantastic fit for the Clippers here. He is an above average defender and like Majic said, turns the ball over a bit more than you would like, but with what he contributes in all other areas you can live with it.
5. Toronto Raptors (from Bobcats)
Original Pick - Luther Wright C 7'2'' 270 21 B- C- C- C+ C+ A, Seton Hall
Re-Draft Pick - Gheorghe Muresan
Sapular Comments: Gheorghe is the pick here for me. He is another double/double guy that is decent on the defensive side of the ball. He does turn the ball a bit too much however with his scoring and rebounding I can live with turning the ball over a bit more. He is also not awful from the line and as a big man that is a huge plus for me. So Delap still gets his C but a much better one in my opinion
Majic Comments: Bit of a surprising pick but I can understand the logc here. His rebounding is a big plus as he looks to be one of the best rebounders of the profile players. Efficiency is lacking a bit due to the lower FT% and I would prefer better defense. Again, I probably have 2-3 guys ahead of him but understand why Sap likes him.
6. Los Angeles Clippers (from Knicks)
Original Pick - Nick Van Exel PG 6'1'' 170 21 C, C+ C, C, D- B, Cincinnati
Re-Draft Pick - Ervin Johnson
Majic Comments: This is a big jump up for Johnson but I really love his game. He scores with outstanding efficiency and does so with great volume. He is near double digit rebounds and plays great defense. His TO’s are a manageable number and he doesnt have a huge flaw. Getting a guy this complete at #6 is ideal and a steal for the Clippers.
Sapular Comments: This is my first surprise from Majic here. While I do agree that Ervin is a talent not sure he is a fit on the Clips. Again Ervin is an outstanding talent, he scores well and he does appear to be great on the defensive side of the court but with having Love, Tom P. and David Lee, I may have traded out if I am Dirt
7. Orlando Magic (from Bullets)
Original Pick - Bryon Russell SF 6'7'' 225 22 B- C- C, B- C, C, Cal State Long Beach
Re-Draft Pick - Luther Wright
Sapular Comments: I think this would have been a terrific pick for Skrouse. He is an amazing upgrade over what he has at C. Luter is not in that top tier but he is at the top of that next tier. He plays fantastic defense, is very efficient and eats up a good amount of minutes. His T/O’s are slightly higher than you want but still would have a very solid pick here.
Majic Comments: Love this pick here and its outstanding value. Luther does all the things you want in a big and does all of them at above average level. He scores efficiently, solid rebounding and has great defensive stats. His low TO’s elevate his play even more. His only “flaw” is his lower FT% but it's not a terrible amount and its something you can survive on, given everything else he does.
8. Seattle SuperSonics (from Trail Blazers)
Original Pick - George Lynch SF 6'8'' 218 22 C+ C- C- C+ B- B, UNC
Re-Draft Pick - Nick Van Exel
Majic Comments: Going to pull the trigger and grab Van Exel with this pick. His scoring is elite for a PG and seems to play strong defense. You would like his efficiency to be higher, but I think he is versatile in that he can run in an outside and inside offense. His rebounding is a little lower too but given his lack of TO’s from his position I love the value. There are a couple really good players on the board still but I think there is a drop off at PG after Van Exel.
Sapular Comments: I think NVE is the right pick here. He is a very very good scorer and is decent on the defensive end of the floor. Getting someone this good this late in the first round is an absolute steal and like Majic said is good enough to play in any offense. If he is in an inside offense he is really all you need for outside scoring. I think, one thing we have seen is that there is a premium on good outside shooters and NVE is exactly that.
9. Chicago Stags
Original Pick - Isaiah Rider SG 6'5'' 215 22 C+ B- C+ C, C, B, UNLV
Re-Draft Pick - Rich Manning
Sapular Comments: Manning is at the top of that 2nd tier of bigs. Averaging just shy of 29 points a game and almost 10 boards for a #9 pick is fantastic value here. He does turn the ball over a lot and you you would like a but more in the assist category but for #9 to get a big that will contribute this much is a steal.
Majic Comments: Solid pick here and agree with much of Saps assessment. Definitely at the top of the second tier of bigs and offers strong efficiency. He has great volume and pulls down a good amount of rebounds. He is not a defensive star but seems like he can hold his own on the end. He is a great scoring big and great complementary piece.
10. Pittsburgh Pipers (from Pacers)
Original Pick - Calbert Cheaney SG 6'7'' 209 21 C+ B- C, C- C, C, Indiana
Re-Draft Pick - Ashraf Amaya
Majic Comments: I scoured the list of options and kept coming back the Amaya as the best player available at this spot. He offers great volume scoring on good efficiency and almost brings down double digit boards. On the defensive end he looks to be a defensive stopper and you can hope that grows as he ages. Overall he offers a complete package and can be counted on at both ends of the floor.
Sapular Comments: I agree with Majic here. I think the obvious choice is Ashraf here. He is still in that 2nd tier of bigs and the points start to drop. The nice part is that he looks very solid on the defensive side of the floor. He is an efficient scorer, a bit on the low side, but still someone that is worth a top 10 pick. I will say that the options are getting a bit thin at this point but Ashraf is still a solid pick.
11. Charlotte Hornets
Original Pick - Vin Baker PF 6'11'' 232 21 B- C, C, B- C, B, University of Hartford
Re-Draft Pick - Allen Houston
Sapular Comments: This is the first pick I struggled with. We are clearly in the next group of players and in my opinion Allen Houston is near the top of that next tier. He can score but that is about it. His FG% is pretty good but does not facilitate all that much, or less that I would like to see. Still a solid player but really seems to be one dimensional.
Majic Comments: Houston was probably the hardest to rank in the redraft given his flaws. I really like Houston as a player but acknowledge he has big shortcomings. Houston can score in bunches and do so with good efficiency. He plays solid defense and won't hurt your team on that end. However, he can't rebound to save his life. He averages a measly 4 rebounds per 36 which is “Not Great Bob”. He is one of the biggest fallers in this redraft and its easy to see why. At pick 11 I think it's worth the risk.
12. Brooklyn Nets (from Grizzlies)
Original Pick - Ervin Johnson C 6'11'' 245 25 C+ C- D+ B, C+ C, New Orleans
Re-Draft Pick - Calbert Cheaney
Majic Comments: Cheaney comes off the board a pick after Houston, I personally like Cheaney more than Houston so this is a nice find for BK at pic 12. Cheaney has great volume on decent efficiency and offers respectable rebounding for a SG. He gets you a steal a game so it looks like he isn't a liability on defense. Efficiency could be better and his TO’s are higher than you might like, but getting a guy of this caliber at 1.12 is outstanding.
Sapular Comments: I can see why Majic chose him here as he does rebound a bit better than Houston does. I agree that he is a nice player but has turn over issues and doesnt shoot as well as Houston but he does help a bit more on the rebound side. I see him as an ok defender. I do agree that he is a good find at 12.
13. Seattle SuperSonics (from Cougars)
Original Pick - Shawn Bradley C 7'6'' 235 21 C, C, D, C, C, A, BYU
Re-Draft Pick - Josh Grant
Sapular Comments: I like Grant’s game. He is a good second option and is someone that will get you a decent amount of points as well as not be a liability on the defensive side. I chose Grant as he is a slightly better defender than other options at this point. While his FG% is not great you also know what you are going to get from him. His turn overs are teetering on a bit high but with where he is selected he is a solid pick, IMO.
Majic Comments: Great pick here, Gant is easily the best big left on the board and I think there is a slight drop off after him. As sap mentions, he scores with good volume and does so with decent efficiency, his rebounding is outstanding but pulls down a respectable 9 per game. What he offers on the defensive end is what elevates him from the others. He helps your team on both ends of the floor and is a great secondary big option.
14. Vancouver Grizzlies (from Spurs)
Original Pick - Gheorghe Muresan C 7'7'' 303 22 C+ C- D- C- C+ B, Romania
Re-Draft Pick - Scott Burrell
Majic Comments: There are a few wing players on the board that are bunched together in terms of skill and ability but I like Burrell the best. He gives you positional versatility in that he can play SG and SF. He scores a respectable 18 points per game and does it with good efficiency. While not elite, his rebounding is serviceable and if played in the SG position its less of a concern. He plays strong defense as evident by his 1.4 spg and wont turn it over too much. Ultimately a really solid wing and great value for Druce here at the 1.14 pick.
Sapular Comments: I am a bit surprised by the pick here. I have another player I would have chosen. I can see what Majic likes about Burrell here and his analysis is correct however I do feel there is a better option here. He does have the flexibility to to play more than one role and at this point in the draft I suppose a player with versatility is a plus. He is on ok scorer and is ok on the defensive side. I am very meh on Burrell
15. Sacramento Kings
Original Pick - Sam Cassell PG 6'3'' 185 23 C, C+ C, C+ D+ C, Florida State
Re-Draft Pick - Rex Walters
Sapular Comments: Admittedly I probably over value Walters but I really like his game especially for a 2nd option wing. He scores very efficiently, he doesnt turn the ball over and will also provide support defensively. I would have taken Walters over Burrell so have Walters fall to this pick would be great for me. He is not your #1 option but as a rotation player he is going to be very solid for you.
Majic Comments: Walters and Burrell are very similar to me and ultimately I prefer the SF over the SG for the attribute benefits. Walters is damn near identical to Burrell so I really like this pick. I think most teams would be happy with either of them at these spots. He is an all around good player and offers strength on both ends of the court.
16. Sacramento Kings (from 76ers)
Original Pick - Bruce Bowen SF 6'7'' 185 22 C+ C, C- C+ C- C, Cal State Fullerton
Re-Draft Pick - Byron Russell
Majic Comments: Some might think this is a surprise pick here but I really like Russell’s game. He is not a huge volume scorer, at least not to this point, but I love what he brings to the table. As I have mentioned before, his position and versatility are key for me. I think you can find plenty of usable bigs later in this draft but there seems to be a big drop off on the wing after Russell. He has great rebounding and plays solid defense. He is a guy you play big minutes on the wing and not have to worry.
Sapular Comments: I am one of those that is surprised by this pick initially. I do feel there are “better” players here but to Majic’s point wings get very thin very soon. As I took a deeper look I do understand this pick and see why he took him here. I may have taken someone else but for a wing he does have very good rebounding, not sure about great, but it is good. He also will contribute significantly on the defensive end. While I did not agree initially I can get behind this pick.
17. Los Angeles Lakers (from Warriors)
Original Pick - Acie Earl C 6'10'' 240 23 C, C- D+ B- C+ C, Iowa
Re-Draft Pick - Rodney Rogers
Sapular Comments: Following the same logic I think Rogers is the last of the decent wings in this draft, hence taking him here. I think you still get solid scoring, some rebounding help and a solid defense. Turn overs are meh and shoots ok, he is a solid pick. He is like vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Not going to blow you away but will always be a solid choice that is dependable and you can count on.
Majic Comments: I dont mind the Rogers pick here at this spot. As we continue to see a small scarcity of wings its never a bad idea to get a plug and play type of guy. He will not be a true star, or a top scoring option, but he can play either wing spot and provide solid help. There are plenty of decent bigs left on the board if you wanted to go that way.
18. Orlando Magic (from Cavaliers)
Original Pick - Rich Manning PF 6'11'' 253 23 B+ C- C- C, C+ C, Washington
Re-Draft Pick - Mike Peplowski
Majic Comments: Picking Mike purely for his offensive capabilities here. He is the best volume scoring player left and does it with good efficiency. He chips in with almost 10 boards per game and wont hurt you with his TO’s. I don't think he provides much on the defensive end but as a backup big it might not be necessary.
Sapular Comments: He was going to be my next pick so I am clearly a fan of this pick at this spot. I think being able to find a big that can score with the efficiency he does is a big time get for Skrouse. His solid rebounding doesnt hurt either. I think the only downside are his turn overs but having almost a block a game and a .535 FG% is nice
19. Indiana Pacers (from Lakers)
Original Pick - Ashraf Amaya PF 6'8'' 230 21 C+ C, C- C, C+ A, Southern Illinois
Re-Draft Pick - Bobby Hurley
Sapular Comments: I think we have dipped into that third tier now. He is just ok all around. He wont hurt you but he also isn't going to help a whole lot. One nice thing is that he can score fairly efficiently however that is about all he does. He does ok with assists but his turnovers are a bit high, but that is what you are going to get at this spot. I think if you can get someone that doesn’t hurt and will contribute at all it is a plus and that is what Hurley does here.
Majic Comments: Agree with Sap as we seem to be dropping to a lower tier of players. Hurley is an interesting situation. He has some warts but looks to have alot of potential, but will he turn into anything? He score, although not efficiently. He doesnt rebound and possibly turns it over more than you would like. Maybe some natural growth helps him long term.
20. Charlotte Hornets (from Clippers)
Original Pick - Rodney Rogers SF 6'7'' 235 22 B- C, C- C- C, C, Wake Forest
Re-Draft Pick - Isaiah Rider
Majic Comments: I struggled with this pick as I didn't like much of what was left on the board. I am more so banking on the potential that Rider showed in his limited minutes. He has some scoring touch and with a little coaching he could turn into a serviceable player. His defense looks to be better than average, so that itself could lead to him surviving in the league.
Sapular Comments: Isaiah rider is interesting. He may turn into something that you can use with some future TC love. Right out of the box he isnt anything all that great. Not a lot of minutes, not a lot of scoring, he does seem to be a bit stronger on the defensive side of the ball and could be good in late game situations (if the coach puts him in for defense, lol) so while there isnt a lot to really like, there also isnt a lot to dislike.
21. Los Angeles Lakers (from Mavericks)
Original Pick - Lindsey Hunter PG 6'2'' 170 22 C, C+ C, C+ D, B, Jackson State University
Re-Draft Pick - Terry Dehere
Sapular Comments: This may be a bit surprising as well but I am going to go with Terry Dehere as he seems to be BPA IMO. He, like Rider, is ok. Nothing terrible and nothing great, just ok at everything. He also rebounds pretty well for a PG and has a very good FG% and his turn overs are low. A solid pick up here I think.
Majic Comments: Terry is an interesting player for sure, and I dont know what to make of this pick. Its a bit of a projection but might not be a terrible gamble. As Sap said, he has strong rebounding and decent efficiency. You have to hope you can coach up his offensive game and get him to score more.
22. New York Knicks (from SuperSonics)
Original Pick - Marcelo Nicola PF 6'9'' 225 22 C+ D+ C- C+ B, C, Argentina
Re-Draft Pick - Adonis Jordan
Majic Comments: Couple of PG’s coming off the board here and it makes sense, seems to be good value on a few of these guys. Adonis looks to be the best of the bunch at this point, he can score a bit and grabs a few rebounds. He plays good defense and doesn't turn the ball over. He might not be a starter but he looks like he could be a long term backup PG.
Sapular Comments: I can get behind this pick. I would certainly say this is 100% team dependent. There are a couple other players worthy of drafting here but as far as PG’s go he is the best remaining. His scoring is ok, his assists are ok and his defense is slightly above average. This is a solid pick for Ank
23. Pittsburgh Pipers (from Chaparrals)
Original Pick - Mike Peplowski C 6'10'' 270 22 B, C- C- C, C+ C, Michigan State
Re-Draft Pick - Mark Buford
Sapular Comments: This pick makes sense for me as BA went with a big in the original draft. He is the best big left. Buford has the potential to be a good quality big with a couple good TC’s and the right upgrades. A solid double/double producer this late is a steal. Turn overs are too high but this late you take the good with the bad. For me the good outweighs the bad.
Majic Comments: Buford is a really strong rebounder and it's easily his best skill. He puts up decent volume although not on good efficiency. His TO’s are probably his biggest concern but it might be worth it given his defense and rebounding are top end of this class. Keeping his TO’s low will be key to how much he contributes moving forward.
24. Atlanta Hawks (from Bulls)
Original Pick - Bo Outlaw PF 6'8'' 210 22 C+ C- C, C, C+ A, Houston
Re-Draft Pick - Geert Hammink
Majic Comments: I expect a run on bigs here to end the draft as the all other options are quite a drop off. Overall I like what Geert gives for a team with this value. He has decent volume and strong rebounding. In addition he looks to be an asset on the defensive end of the floor. He won't be a liability with his TO’s so you don't have to worry there. With some coaching to his scoring and natural growth on defense, he could be a great option off the bench.
25. Phoenix Suns (from Raptors)
Original Pick - Geert Hammink C 7'0'' 262 23 C+ D+ C- C+ B+ C, LSU
Re-Draft Pick - Marcelo Nicola
Sapular Comments: I think Marcelo is a heck of a find this late in the draft, and as Majic said the run on Bigs is started. Marcelo will score, rebound, play defense and not turn the ball over. He has a good FG% and is a SOLID back up big here. I think if you can find someone this good this late you are in a great position.
Majic Comments: Marcelo is another solid pick. He doesn WOW you with anything but he doesn't seem to have a massive flaw. He will get you some points on decent efficiency, rebound well and not turn the ball over. Hard to know what he offers on the defensive end but overall he is not a bad backup option.
26. Toronto Raptors (from Hawks)
Original Pick - Thomas Hill SG 6'5'' 200 21 C+ C+ C- C+ C, C, Duke
Re-Draft Pick - Chris Whitney
Majic Comments: I am going to swerve a little with this pick but I like the potential of Whitney. When you look at his overall numbers the only concern is his scoring efficiency which I think some coaching could help. His TO’s are low for a PG and he seems to offer strong defense. He has workable rebounding numbers and a strong FT%. If you can get his FG% up to 45% or higher you at least have a long term backup PG.
Scapular Comments: Majic you are right you zigged while we were zagging. This is a different direction. I am not a fan of this pick. I think there are better players out there. He does not do anything well other than not turn the ball over. I guess you could argue that he does facilitate but I am not looking for this type of player here. In the first round I want someone that can at least score a little bit. I am a bit puzzled by this pick and to me it doesnt make a lot of sense.
27. Chicago Stags (from Nets)
Original Pick - Chris Whitney PG 6'0'' 168 21 C, C+ A- C- D, B, Clemson
Re-Draft Pick - Aaron Williams
Sapular Comments: Williams is still a serviceable big and someone that isn't going to wow you but at the same time he will not be a liability on the floor. He is the last double/double guy on the board. He does turn the ball over a bit but nothing too scary. His FG% is a bit low but that is not enough to scare me away from this pick. I think the fact that he scores, rebounds and plays OK defense is what makes this a very good pick here.
Majic Comments: This is a fine pick and nothing too spectacular but we are at the end of the first round. Williams offers some nice stats but doesn't do anything really well. Again, best hope with these picks is to find a guy you can coach and get up to a long term playable level.
28. Pittsburgh Pipers
Original Pick - Bobby Hurley PG 6'0'' 165 22 C- C+ A- C, D- B, Duke
Re-Draft Pick - Terry Dehere
Majic Comments: I make this pick due to the fact that I dont really like anyone else available on the board. Terry offers some tantilizing efficiency and with a little coaching he could turn into a really nice offensive piece. He might be best suited to play a SG position and his strong rebounding could help with that. He offers solid defense and overall just needs better volume.
Sapular Comments: I think Dehere is a fine pick here. He gives you decent scoring, decent rebounding and his turnovers are lowl. He does play defense and can facilitate just enough to make him a worthwhile rotation player. His FG5 is good as well. I do agree his volume is low so it is hard to say if the FG% is due to the low volume or if it would translate with more. I think this pick is fine.
29. Charlotte Hornets (from Timberwolves)
Original Pick - Todd Mundt C 7'0'' 250 23 B- D+ C- C+ C+ B, Delta State
Re-Draft Pick - Scott Haskin
Sapular Comments: I think this is an absolute steal. If I am honest I probably overlooked him earlier in the draft and shouldn’t have. Now my eyes could just be happy so see someone that isnt just meh but Haskin seems to be a real find. Good scoring, good defense and good rebounding. This might be my favorite pick in the first round as getting someone this good this late is really how you build solid teams. This would be a dream pick up for fecta.
Majic Comments: I think this is a great pick to finish out the first round. Haskin offers solid defense and wont hurt you with TO’s. He will need some TC and coaching help to get his scoring volume up but you could always plan to just turn him into a Defensive Rebounding big.
