Salmons may not have put up eye-popping numbers in college but he did show amazing versatility and do a little bit of everything in his time in Coral Cables. He played pretty much every position but center at some point during his college career and brings a very steady and calm demeanor, never playing out of control. He's a high IQ guy who shows exceptional instincts for spacing on both ends of the court. He seeks out and finds mismatches and exploits them, and he's a very skillful player with TMBSL-ready size and strength. He's not got elite speed but he's crafty with the ball in his hands and displays an excellent handle and a quick first step. He often operated as the point in Miami and while he won't likely be asked to do that at the next level he can serve as a second initiator or point forward type and he has excellent court vision and passing ability.
Salmons is a leader and a team-first guy and he shows that on the defensive end as well. He has excellent anticipation and understanding of the team concept on defense and does a great job with his footwork and positioning. He's got the requisite athleticism and length to stay with anyone on the perimeter and even showed that he can hold his own in the post against some leaner bigs who tried to back him down. He also does a great job crashing the boards for a guard.
The only major weakness that scouts point to for Salmons is his three point shooting. He's a willing shooter but not consistent from deep despite his ability to make in the mid-range and good numbers at the free throw line. Scouts also point out that he's not an overwhelmingly quick or bouncy athlete but his versatility and instincts make up for a lot of that.
Salmons does a lot of things well but he doesn't have one elite skill, scouts say that might limit his ceiling to that of a very high-end role player but that also means that his floor probably isn't far from there as well.
