The leader of the Flyin' Illini who led Illinois to a Final Four in 1989 and won the NCAA Slam Dunk Championship at the Final Four in his senior season, Gill comes to TMBSL after leading the Illini offense to new heights in his four-year college career. He led the team to over 80 ppg in his three seasons as a starter, capping that tenure with a senior season that included finishing 2nd in the Big Ten in PPG, a 2nd Team Consensus All-America selection, and All-Big Ten 1st Team. Scouts credit Gill for combining excellent athleticism and an ability to attack the rim with outstanding perimeter defense.
Gill does most of his damage offensively in the paint, attacking the rim both with and without the ball. He is a really big threat in the pick and roll and is an above average ball-handler and creator for his teammates. He does a good job of finding cutting lanes when he works without the ball and finishes efficiently in the paint when he has the opportunity. He finishes strong through contact and is not troubled by traffic in the lane. He isn't a bad jump shooter and honestly should look to take more opportunities in that area as he was a career 75.5% free throw shooter and 37.4% from deep, he just prefers to make an emphatic finish in the lane to taking his shot. Defensively, Gill will be able to stick on this end even if his scoring ability doesn't translate, as he has the athleticism to defend anyone on the perimeter and did an excellent job keeping his assignments on the perimeter and out of the lane. He does a good job taking stabs at opponents' dribbles without fouling and averaged right at 2 steals per game for his entire college career. He likes to try leak out and start transition opportunities once the ball goes up on the defensive end, so he's not a factor on the defensive boards, though he's been known to finish some emphatic putback slams on the offensive end.
