Mr. Basketball in Michigan in 1986 and the #2 overall prep player coming out in his class, Mills comes to TMBSL after a three-year career as a starter with the Wolverines and a final season in Ann Arbor where he was among the best of the Big Ten. He led the Big Ten in blocks (he didn't have much competition) and field goals and was among the top 20 in several other categories including free throw makes (18th), rebounds (4th), assists (14th), steals (14th), points (5th), points per game (5th), rebounds per game (4th), effective field goal percentage (6th), and true shooting percentage (8th). Mills, like his teammate Loy Vaught, is the type of guy that helps create a winning team because he can do a little bit of everything without having any major weaknesses.
Defensively, he's a solid athlete who can move around and play good defense. He was among the best rim protectors in the Big Ten and should be able to block some shots as a pro, but his status as the best shot-blocker in the Big Ten had to do more with lack of competition than his own ability to excel in the role. He plays well within the team concept though and shouldn't be a liability defensively. He is solid, but not spectacular, on the boards defensively. On the other end of the court, Mills can score in a variety of ways although he isn't one to force his own shot. He waits for the right looks to materialize and converts them efficiently. He has a solid back to the basket game and in his final season in college, did a solid job converting opportunities from here. However, he's much more comfortable playing a little more passively like a stretch 4. He's got a very smooth shooting stroke and though he wasn't asked to make three pointers for the Wolverines, scouts project him to become a threat as a catch and shoot guy from 3 at the next level. He really prefers stepping out and hitting his jump shot to banging in the post (even though he can do it when necessary). Just based on how he plays, scouts don't expect he'll be much of a threat on the offensive boards. He protects the ball well and doesn't turn it over.
Mills is another guy in this class that has a developed nicely already and comes into TMBSL with some skills that can make him an effective role player on Day 1. He's got a high floor, but many question if he has a truly elite skill or if he has the upside to get one there.
