My fellow GMs I am very much in need of a new laptop. My current is from 2009, it's an HP Pavilion g7 Notebook running on an AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.50 GHz.
I am fairly well versed in the world of computing, as far as what everything is, but I have a very poor sense of what is averages vs good vs great, and what their respective values are. I surely know less than many of you.
I am not a heavy gamer though I do play a few games, mostly on Steam. I would mostly use it for online browsing, email, various basic tasks in excel/word, accessing my external HD for picture, video, and music storage, etc. Pretty basic stuff.
A few of the things I would like are an SSD and a 17+ inch screen. Outside of that I just want good performance for good value.
I found this MSI gaming laptop that seems to fit the bill but I've never heard of MSI. Best buy has it here
MSI - GF75 THIN 17.3" Gaming Laptop - i7-10750H - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti - 1TB SSD - Aluminum Black
Comparative prices show that Best Buy is actually not bad at 1300. Amazon shows it for 1700, Target for 1220, and Walmart for 1450 but all out of stock. Before I make the purchase I thought I'd check with some pros. Appreciate any input you have to offer.

That's not bad. Do you NEED a gaming laptop though? You can get a thinner 2-in-1 that will have a 4k screen and be able to play basically any game you want with pretty jacked up graphics. Unless youre playing the most cutting edge maximum graphics possible games

Other gaming ones that I saw were 2K+, so this seemed well priced. I'm not trying to overpay or buy more than I need tho so I'm wide open to suggestions

if you're going to be playing any games at all, get one with a gpu. it doesn't really matter how good the gpu is just that it's there. if you want the ability to add extra storage or memory, look at modular laptops.

Agreed with Odin. I already talked about it in discord but the beef gpu in gaming laptops isn't worth it because of the weight and battery life. Imo a smaller dedicated GPU in a lighter laptop makes a better choice. And I play hours of games a day.
