Yeah, soup losing Theo is not the same as others losing guys with full birds. He could only offer the exact same contract as anyone else who had 12.5 mil in cap space so it was very low odds that he would stay in Dallas. It would more surprising that Kurland came back in that instance IMO than Theo leaving. 0 for 2 was the most likely outcome.
If 10 teams maxed Theo, Mavs basically had a 1 in 10 shot.

Having your best player leave you in FA is more punishing in wheel than in lotto. Most of the contenders have pretty much mortgaged most if not all their assets for their current teams, if they lose someone in FA that's a guaranteed 5-10 seasons of mediocrity waiting for them. If I lose CP3 in lotto FA, it'd suck but I can sell off my other pieces to tank and regroup. If I lose it here in wheel FA, yes I can still sell off my other pieces but my ceiling on those returns makes me a .500 8th seed team for 8 seasons until I get wheeled my 1.2 that's just not what happens though, there's no team that's been stuck around .500 that long under any circumstances. druce mentioned the warriors blazers and mavs - the warriors won 55 games last year and 59 the year before, the blazers have been a 4 seed three years running. the mavs have had a three year stretch around .500, but now they've got three good young players signed long term, no other long term deals and max room next year, and two top eleven picks in a row en route you keep bringing up larry smith in this thread but he was the 10th pick. you don't need a super top pick to build a title team, let alone a merely good team, so you shouldn't get such tunnel vision on when you have a super top pick. you can still choose to do that but that's not a wheel problem, that's a you problem
