The Value of a Bankz Coin: West Edition
Entering year six of 6.0 I wanted to take some time to take a look at roster value around the league. This article series is my take on roster value based purely on the top single pick return a player could get in a trade. Obviously most trades have multiple picks but that top tier piece is what the trade is built around. I broke down the value of picks in the following ranges. 1.1 stands alone as the top tier, those are the elite players in the league. Next I have Super Star, All-Star, Good Player and Role Players. Picks range from 1.1 to 1.20 and are split between those brackets of players. Obviously this is my opinion based on past returns, current performance of player, contract and finally a little bit of future production is taken into consideration. Future draft picks are not valued in this article as we wanted to focus just on the players at the moment.
Chicago Stags
Elite:
Superstar: Joe Barry Carroll, David Lee
All-Star:
Good: Jeff Ruland, Mickael Gelabale
Role: Chris Whitney
Value: 47 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Joe Barry is very close to being an elite talent. David Lee if he offered anything other than scoring would also be in that Elite, it goes to show how good his scoring is that he’s just below that level. Ruland is a good scoring big and Gelabale could develop into a nice scoring wing for an inside offense. Whitney fits that pass first point guard that inside offense offenses love to have.
Dallas Mavericks
Elite:
Superstar:
All-Star: Moala Tautuaa, Mirza Teletovic
Good: Shawn Witherspoon
Role: Randy Breuer, Winfred King, Aaron Miles
Value: 28 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Moala still wont stop and he also doesn’t seem to want to retire. Still father time isn’t on his side and that bill could come due soon. It's why I don’t have him in the tier above because on talent alone he’s very much worth that. Mirza looks very promising and looks like he will be the core player that Soup builds around down the road or his key piece to flip in a rebuild. Witherspoon is a valuable piece in a league that feels like you want small forwards at the two and three over shooting guards (don’t kill me Eric). King probably is a bit undervalued here and Miles and Breuer are more role guys vs build around types.
Milwaukee Bucks
Elite: Al Horford, Antonio Gates
Superstar:
All-Star: Nick Fazekas
Good: Kelvin Sampson
Role: Fran Vazquez, Matt Walsh
Value: 77 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
One of the highest valued rosters in the west and sim league the Bucks are loaded. Horford, Gates are as good as you will get and worthy of 1.1’s. Fazekas is one of the best scoring players in the league. He offers nothing else and for that I knock him a level down to All-Star but could see teams giving up a pick in the 1.2-1.5 range in the package for him. Sampson seems to be a cut above the offensive focused points. Vaszquez and Walsh soom like role players more so guys you build around. Still pieces important to a playoff roster.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Elite: Chris Paul
Superstar: Kenny George
All-Star:
Good: Daequan Cook
Role: Jason Smith, Isaiah Austin
Value: 53 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Chris Paul is a very talented player. The lack of well rounded point guards who could play in any offense is allowing CP3 to shine. CP3's run last year in the playoffs reminds me of prime Belov carrying an illegal Raptors roster in the 3001 playoffs. Still his value is sky high till we get some better points in the league. We could see that starting in the 3006 draft with hopefully heavy hitters in Westbrook and Rose. So Chris could be one of the players in this league where his value may be at its highest it could be. I guess time will tell. Cook is a good player but nothing special, Smith and Austin are role guys and Kenny George is probably the best D/R big in the league and honestly it’s not close.
Phoenix Suns
Elite:
Superstar:
All-Star: Andrew Bogut, Anfernee Hardaway, Tiago Splitter
Good:
Role: Jared Jordan
Value: 31 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
These Suns are starting to build a very nice roster built with young promising talent in the recent drafts. Penny looks very promising along with another point guard in this past draft could lead the Suns deeper in the playoffs than the roster is really built to do. Still his value is very high and possibly could enter a tier higher as time moves on. Bogut is a good big man and he’s got the build to stay in the upper class of bigs. Splitter is a guy who I didn’t scout but he also looks very good and worth a pick in the 6-10 range as the prime pick to build a package around.
San Antonio Spurs
Elite:
Superstar:
All-Star:
Good: Mike Gminski
Role:
Value: 5 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
The loss of McCray may have broken Pointy Egg. A GM who was struggling to get into the groove of 6.0 it's rumored he may have not even put in bids for his free agents. Now he’s not set a depth chart and I guess someone should get Bruns on the phones. Unfortunately for the next GM you have very little on the roster to work with. Gminski is the best player and that’s not saying much. A well rounded big who could be a #2 big on a playoff team. Outside of that the roster is lacking.
Texas Chaparrals
Elite:
Superstar: Danny Granger
All-Star: Theodoros Papaloukas, Tyreese Breshers,
Good: Kennedy Meeks, O'Koren
Role: McRoberts, Blackmon
Value: 48 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
A team that outperforms its talent? Not really because the talent is very high on this roster but age, contracts are hits to some of the talent like Papaloukas. Breshers and Meeks are still good scoring bigs in the mold of a Joshua Smith. Papa is an elite point that has won two sim league titles on two different teams. O'Koren is a solid wing player and a cut above a role guy. Slightly below what Dudley brings to the table. Blackmon has slowed down and borderline on the return game thanks to me hating true SGs. McRoberts seems close to Fazekas but not getting those added mentor points may be the reason he never reaches that level.
Golden State Warriors
Elite:
Superstar: Devin Williams
All-Star: Antonella Riva
Good: Greg Oden, Ronny Turiaf
Role: Andrew Toney, Byron Scott
Value: 42 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Devin Williams playing as a big heavy league and starting to age is the only reason why he isn’t a 1.1 candidate. But I wouldn’t argue against or criticize any team who offered a 1.1 for his services. One of the best if not best big men in the league. Riva got the Germany treatment to get him back to his levels of last year and guys that was really really good. Add in the +15 upgrades and his play has improved. Moved for a 1.5 is it possible he is moved this year for the same type of return? I think the age and germany treatment given would lead me to no. Still I think a pick in the 1.6 to 1.10 range is very worthy of his talent. Oden is a cut above a role player and Turifaf was a nice 2nd round hit for the Warriors who he could easily flip for a much higher return in the 1.11-1.15 range. Toney i’m not sure what to make of as Ward’s roster seems in between outside focused and inside focused. For that reason I think Toney and Scott both fall in role/offense specific roles that could fetch a pick in the 1.16-1.20 range.
Los Angeles Clippers
Elite:
Superstar: Michael Brooks, Nick Van Exel
All-Star: Manute Bol
Good:
Role: Lavon Mercer, Jawann Oldham
Value: 48 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
I love Brooks, I’ve been working the phone lines and burning the midnight oil trying to get a deal done. A sticking point is the value of the player in a walk year vs the value of the player in general. For a guy of Brooks talent in a walk year I think you could make the case for a top 5 pick going his way as the centerpiece. Under a max deal he’s elite talent level. I think NVE is a home run pick for the Clippers. He’s already showing that he’s going to be an impact player in 6.0 as a rookie. Bol is an all-star level player, someone I value in the 1.6-1.10 as the centerpiece for a deal. Some have felt he may be a Superstar and worth a 1.4-1.5 but i’m still there. But given his amazing contract I wouldn’t hate on a team who pulled the trigger on a package centered around a top 5 pick for Bol if they felt he was the final piece to title contention. Mercer and Oldham are role specific guys like many of the D/R bigs and pass first points we have seen listed throughout the article series.
Los Angeles Lakers
Elite: Marc Gasol
Superstar:
All-Star: Uros Slokar
Good: Luther Head
Role: John Pinone, Acie Earl
Value: 47 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Gasol is the crown jewel of this Lakers roster. I don’t believe the talent level is as strong as some of the performances of the players and he’s been able to carry a largely average to above average supporting cast. Speaking of that, everyone’s favorite 2nd round selection Uros Slakar makes the list as the 2nd most valuable player on this roster. I’m just not 100% sold that his production is based on true skill level vs again a poor roster being led by Gasol. Same can be said about Lurther Head. With that said if a move was made with those two that’s one hell of a flip for the last two picks in the 2nd round. Another case of these guys maybe being at the high point of value. Pinone, Earl are role guys and nothing more.
Portland Trailblazers
Elite:
Superstar: Ralph Sampson
All-Star:
Good: Tom Piotrowski, Sergei Belov, Jarvis Lang
Role :Josh Peppers
Value: 32 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
We may test the value of the Bankz coin in the upcoming days or this off-season with this Blazers roster. Majic tested the fire sale route this off-season before ultimately deciding to keep the band together for another run. Sampson has been able to keep his value even with the low potential in his scout. I think as a Superstar tier player the Blazers could get a package headlined with a pick in the 1.2-1.5 range. Potrwoski, Belov and Lang are againing but talented players. The age/contract holds them down a bit but picks in the 1.11-1.15 seem reasonable for those guys. Peppers something in the 1.16-1.20 range as he may have a little life left in the tread.
Sacramento Kings
Elite:
Superstar:
All-Star: Sidney Green, Andray Blatche
Good:
Role: Lowes Moore
Value: 21 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Everyone drools at Sid Green but I think the cornerstone of this roster is Blatche. His potential and growth could have him climbing this list. Obviously at this point everyone knows I think Green is a product of a bad roster and high usage because of it. I have him valued in the 1.6-1.10 range as the key piece in a return. Lowes Moore could land a mid to late first as a role specific point in the league.
Seattle Sonics
Elite:
Superstar:
All-Star:
Good: Spencer Hawes, Bruce Collins, Arron Afflalo
Role:
Value: 15 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Nothing screams out to me on this roster. A few good players in Hawes, Collins and Afflalo. I think player development has hurt the value and on court product for the Sonics. Picks in the 1.11-1.15 range is where I feel a fair return should start. Afflalo could land more because of the very positive TCs even though the on court hasn’t matched the off-court improvement.
Vancouver Grizzlies
Elite:
Superstar:
All-Star: Gheorghe Muresan
Good:
Role:
Value: 10 Bankz Coin
Breakdown:
Big Gheorghe is a very promising big man. I have him valued in the 1.6-1.10 range for a flip. A few other guys are borderline in the return department as father time may have finally killed top return value on our chart. Capel, Hines once cornerstones of the roster have had awful seasons as they are shopped by Druce. I’m not seeing people giving up more than a 1.16-1.20 pick but with limited supply on the market a higher return could happen.
