Mayo profiles as a shot-maker, and a lethal one at that. He possesses range well beyond the TMBSL 3-point line and hit consistently in his one season in college, making over 40% of his 6.5 attempts from deep per game. He has as sweet a jump shot as you'll find coming out of college, and he's a crafty ball-handler who does a good job creating space to get good looks off from the mid-range and 3. He shoots just as good off the dribble as he does in catch and shoot opportunities. He has outstanding body control and uses it to hit turnaround shots and fadeaways from range with ease. He's an explosive leaper, clocking a 41 inch vertical at the combine. He has a couple of moves to create separation and space to get his looks in the paint, and he got more consistent at converting those opportunities throughout his season at Southern Cal (though that could use some continued improvement).
The biggest questions about how Mayo translates to the next level come on D. When he's matched up against opposing lead guards and smaller wings and he's locked in, he can give people absolute fits. The problem is he's a bit undersized to play against some longer wings in TMBSL and he got exposed a bit against those type of players even in college. He also lacks first step quickness and can get beat off the dribble by quicker guards.
In an ideal world, Mayo would project as a point guard at the next level and that would ease some of the concerns about how he matches up defensively. The problem is he doesn't have the play-making abilities and doesn't quite take care of the basketball like you'd hope a PG would and his elite shooting makes him project as someone who plays off the ball a bit more.
