Scouts call Mashburn one of the more tantalizing prospects of the draft. Despite being a three year starter for Kentucky, Mashburn is still incredibly young for his class and only 20 years old. He is already showing signs of having a fairly advanced game for his age, but scouts still project a fair amount of growth for this young man as he continues to refine his game.
Offensively, Mashburn has already shown the ability to score at all three levels while at Kentucky. He's an explosive athlete, which is incredible for a young man who packs a lot of punch into his long, 6'8", 240 lb frame. His shooting stroke doesn't have any obvious mechanical flaws, but he needs to work on his consistency. He has shown the ability to take and make threes, shooting four per game over three years with a 37.6% conversion rate. In the paint, Mashburn is an efficient scorer and takes great looks and converts them at a high rate of success. He's very strong on the handle with his right hand but his last year of college opposing defenses began to notice this and hedge to that side, it showed with a drop in efficiency for Jamal and he'll need to work to be better going the other way. With his touch around the basket, he will be truly deadly if he can become more consistent from range and work to improve his left-hand handle as defenders won't be able to game plan to take any one aspect of his offensive game away from him.
Defensively, Mashburn is still learning the finer points of footwork and spacing to become a good team defender. His athleticism and quick hands will give him a high ceiling on this end if he focuses on improving in this regard. He is a willing rebounder and his athleticism will allow him to challenge much larger players on the boards.
