Test Sims for Dummies: (How to Upgrade and Draft your new Power Forward / Center) by Sir Joseph Dirte
Today I’m going to be simplifying the Mechanics article and possibly giving the new GMs something quick and easy to look at. It should help guide them into putting the proper upgrades and camps into their prospects. I also think it will guide them in the coming years to help pick out the perfect prospect for them.
I have two players I’m going to test all in the same situation. I built a 2nd round prospect that you could see in a draft and maxed out different attributes and tested them to see what they improved in and how it helped their usage and field goal percentages.
The Standard Centers will be playing alongside the 03 rookies in an Inside Focus offense and Very Fast as well as the #1 scoring option.
I did not play them with Horford or Gasol
Standard:
Our standard player #1 looks more like a 2nd rounder than your normally top 10 big man. I decided to start the Inside Scoring at 65 so we can see what a +35 does for those 2nd round hidden gems. As you can see he doesn’t get a lot of usage or minutes as a #1 option. Throughout the tests we will get a better look at what improvements do what. I’m sure most won’t be surprised by these tests but for you new guys pay close attention.
Inside Scoring:
Our +35 into Inside increased our players FG% by .14%. That is from way below average league wide to good enough to be a starter in this league. You can only put +35 into a player like this and he can immediately bring an impact to your team. Hint the +30 meta at the moment.
Jump Shot:
Some may be surprised by this but getting the poor Inside and Max Jumpshot actually improved our big man’s FG% quiet a bit. I think we may see some GMs start to go this route instead of trying to build scoring bigs every draft. Personally, I’m tired of the 60 Jump shot scoring bigs that go to the FT line. I’m more inclined to mess with Jump Shot moving forward.
3pt Shot:
This isn’t something your going to see very often but I wanted to test it anyway. I know Yi had a lot of upgrades at 3pter and we’ve seen that not work that well. It did increase our big mans FG% but not good enough to throw all your upgrades into 3pt shot. I would think more about it if you did that with a Gminksi who was drafted at 90 jumpshot. I would always max jumpshot before putting any upgrades into 3 ball.
Quickness:
After looking at our PGs quickness I’m not sure if Quickness is the stat for Big Men. It only gave our prospect 1 more min per game and very little improvement with FG%.
Shot Blocking:
I thought this would be an interesting test. Not for showing what your upgrades will do but what can happen with your Center having 60 Blocks to 100. If you put upgrades into shot blocking, I would highly suggest you max it out at Center. If you’re maxing out a PF with 50 I just don’t think it’s worth it. You will see in our test that sometimes taller isn’t better with Blocks.
Offensive Rebounding:
I know a lot of GMs and the mechanics article give high praise to offensive rebounds. So I didn’t to max out O-Rebounding ass what happens to our FG% even if our Inside Scoring is 65. Unfortunately, it just didn’t matter with this prospect. I think improving our test with a better prospect will be a better gauge. Either way if you’re going to improve a scorer rebounding, I would most definitely upgrade their O-Boards first. You ask why? BC Why not?
Defensive Rebounding:
Just like above I wasn’t sure if having more defensive rebounds would help get our big man more rebounds. Similar to real life you just get more defensive rebounds naturally. Surprisingly enough it actually happened. There could be something with defensive vs offensive and depending on how your prospects built. If you have a d/r big it’s the obvious choice to upgrade defensive rebounds before anything else. When it comes to scoring and you have low rebounding maybe you would rather have more rebounds than a tick better FG%.
Strength:
Before testing I was a firm believer that strength was the 2nd most important attribute for a big man. Gives you a tick in FG% and more usage. When it didn’t really help with minutes per game it did help with more points per game and better FG%. Unlike PGs it’s a requirement for your big man to have it least some strength. If you’re looking at prospects with more jumping than strength, I would always go with the stronger guy.
Jumping:
As always, this attribute is a bit controversial. It’s a way to get your guy from B+ to A- with a +10 camp but I would much rather put it into strength/quickness for a scoring big. As you can see It doesn’t do a whole lot but again this could be because our big has below average inside scoring. When you look at just the Jumping attribute it self and average everywhere else. I don’t think it helps your players FG% but I truly believe it will help him shoot more.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-I know the league loves it’s tall players so I decided to test the same build but is 7 foot and 235 lbs. After the test results I found some differences. If you looking at a slightly better C that’s 6’9 I think you should go with that instead of the slightly worst guy that is taller. I’ve always been a big fan of the taller guy but after this I don’t really care. If you have the same prospect but taller, I always thought it was an upgrade. Now I fear and I know some GMs know this already that sometimes height hurts you. The big thing I wanted to test was rebounding and shot blocking and you can see for yourself.
Standard Prospect #2:
Not much different than prospect 1 just taller. We will see some things get worst and better as the test results unfold. Don't touch that dial.
Inside Scoring:
The Shorter and Heavier player did play better this test. It is possible that weight plays more of a factor than height when it comes to scoring the basketball.
Jump Shot:
The 1st prospect is just playing better with his jump shot. More test wouldn’t hurt but for this articles purpose the height didn’t matter.
3pt Shot:
Once again not a huge change from stats but the shorter prospect just played slightly better. Again, the test results show height not a better player.
Quickness:
Different height and weight but same results. Quickness doesn’t seem to be that important for bigs. If we dug around and tried to find something, we might see it but just at a glance. Nothing.
Blocks:
Surprisingly enough height doesn’t help blocks. Some knew that some didn’t. Just a friendly reminder that a 6’9” guy gets more than the 7-footer.
Offensive Rebounds:
Our taller 7-footer definitely had a better sim with offensive rebounds than our shorter player. When looking at prospects keeping an eye on this could really get you in the right direction. If 2 offensive minded players are similar but one is taller, I think I would pick the taller prospect.
Defensive Rebounds:
This is why I tested the taller 7-foot player. I think he will get you more rebounds than your shorter player. With a bigger test size maybe I’m wrong but I think if we continue to test I would still lean on taking the taller player if he doesn’t block shots.
Strength:
This shows a lot imo. When you’re building your prospect through improvements or even deciding on who you want. When it comes to a PF/C and you want him to be a scorer. Take the taller guy that is stronger than his jumping ability. Strength is a great stat, just go and look at Joshua Smith and Jeff Ruland. Jeff Ruland and Smith have very low Jumping.
Jumping:
I think we are understanding jumping the more we test. They put up more shots.
I really hope our new GMs and inactive GMs that aren't very familiar with the current meta take a look at this and make their own decisions. If you have any questions with a prospect or need a 2nd opinion, you can always pm the draft guru himself.
I test regularly and look at several things constantly. If you have an idea and would like for me to test anything for you, I will do it no problem. I've been trying to get to the bottom of all the fouls and why players foul and what makes this occur. When i get a decent grasp on it I will put it into an article. Until then folks. Happy Hunting and thanks for your kindly votes.
