Gortat's main selling point is his size and physical maturity relative to his peers coming from overseas. He is closer to the prototypical TMBSL body in terms of strength in both the upper and lower body to pair with a 7'0" frame and solid length, and he still moves the floor better than some of the more plodding seven footers in this class. He jumps well and shows good timing and instincts defensively.
That makes Gortat one of the more interesting defensive prospects to come out of Europe so far in TMBSL. He has the tools with his lateral quickness and verticality to become a passable rim protector and the strength to be a good man defender in the post. His lateral quickness will allow him to come out to the perimeter and switch without being an immediate liability. He's a little foul prone because he has a tendency to bite at his opposition's first move and get off balance. He's still green, for sure, but the tools are there to get better. He's shown the pretty consistent ability to block shots and rebound well in limited EuroLeague competition, at least.
His offensive game is a little bit more raw. He has a decent shooting stroke, but probably won't ever be much of a stretch big as he seems to at least prefer to be physical and stay closer into the paint to hunt for offensive rebounds. He is very mechanical when he receives the ball in the paint and while he has shown that he's working on some back to the basket game, he's not very consistent in finishing those attempts and you can see the gears turning in his head as he moves. He doesn't pass well out of the post, which may be trouble at the next level if he doesn't get better at finishing some of those opportunities.
Gortat is older than most players you'd like to see with this much development left, but Gortat is still newer to the game and a bit mechanical; with his athletic tools many scouts still see a good bit of upside left for him to grow as a player.
