We decided to change things up after some feedback and constructive criticism from a certain GM that resides in the West. Also added two new participants due to Tim not wanting to give his secrets away.
1. How many players and who in this FA class deserves a FULL IanBoyd max?
Trofie
Dwight Howard, Al Jefferson, , Jr Smith, LaSalle Thompson , Luther Rackley , John Peter Ramos , James Worthy , Cliff Anderson , Viktor Sanikidze
Druce
Conservatively....Freeman Williams, Tobias Harris, JR Smith, Luther Rackley, Jack Givens, Cliff Anderson, Al Jefferson, Robert Swift, Frankie Sanders, James Worthy, Josh Smith, Dwight Howard
Delap
Depending on your team structure and intent, I could see as few as 5 or as many as 8-9 guys that deserve a FULL MAX. The easy ones are like the Sonics big duo, who are no-brainer FULL MAX guys. Then you have Frankie Smokes in the 'Couv, who due to positional scarcity and overall talent is probably also an easy answer to the max contract query. Then you have a couple older dudes like Worthy and TheSalle who are still putting up the numbers and are young enough to warrant a big contract. The eye-of-the-beholder types to be are more along the lines of Rackley (who might be the 2nd best player from the 3019 class) and Ariza. The fringy guys that might get paid, but are a bigger risk, include Cliff Anderson (who? where did he come from?), Swift (p36 numbers have always looked good, but they've never held up when he's gotten more minutes), and Gobert (just not super sexy, despite generally good output).
Heebs
Al Jefferson, Dwight Howard, Trevor Ariza, Robert Swift, JR Smith, Freeman Williams, Shaun Livingston, Cliff Anderson, Frank Ntilikina, and Luther Rackley are the candidates. So I count 10. But I bet there will be at least 12.
20s
I will say 11 or 12. These are the guys: Al Jefferson, Dwight Howard, Robert Swift, Cliff Anderson, James Worthy, LaSalle Thompson, Luther Rackley, JR Smith, Peter John Ramos, Trevor Ariza, Rudy Gobert, Frank Ntilikina. Frank is the questionable one for me.
Fason
Definites
Al Jefferson - Elite
Dwight Howard - Elite
Robert Swift - #FreeBob
JR Smith - Finally seems to have reached his potential
Trevor Ariza - Important player type
Cliff Anderson - Rare two-way SG
Frankie Smokes - Could be unleashed
Maybes
Luther Rackley - Has he already hit his archetype’s ceiling?
Peter John Ramos - Shot blocking got worse
Lasalle Thompson - Diminishing returns at some point
James Worthy - Won’t be close to worth it if his scoring volume drops.
2. Which players do you think will be overvalued if they hit the open market?
Trofie
Trevor Ariza comes to mind. He's really struggling this year overall. Plays really good defense and Rebounds well, I just don't know if that P/TSA is worth that max.
Druce
Big names that are kinda shitty: Derrick Rose, Patrick Ewing, Michael Beasley, Jonas Valanciunas (not that shitty) Michael Redd
Delap
As I answered last time, there are a couple that I want to see more sustained success from before believing they are MAX worthy, especially Cliff Anderson and Robert Swift. The same could be true for more seasoned vets like Worthy or Of The'Angelo Russell. Ricky Ledo is another player who is good, but could trick someone into giving him a MAX or 8 digit offer... which is probably a reach. I don't have a lot of love for his game, but I could see people getting all a tizzy about Livingston's potential too, but that's a gamble I personally wouldn't overpay for.
Heebs
Rumors are swirling that the commissioners office has been considering free agent drafts, so I honestly think most of these players will be over valued given that possibility. Imagine signing a medicore big like Luther Rackley when you could have saved that cap space for an offer on Lebron or Chris Bosh.
20s
Shaun Livingston, I just don't think he is worth a max but I am sure he would get one.
Fason
Rudy Gobert can block shots but his rebounding and lack of efficiency would make it difficult for me to give him anything more than something like a 4 years - 8 Mil type of deal.
Shaun Livingston is interesting but for his player type I think his rebounding/steals/TOs make it tough justify the max he may get.
De’Aaron Fox is going to come close to double digit win shares and I’d advise against giving him anything above the MLE. His career pattern is good-bad-good. He’s due for a bad year.
3. Who are some older players that you are concerned about hitting a wall?
Trofie
LaSalle could be one. But I think you'll get a few good years out of him before that happens. Tobias Harris is still performing above his grades but he looks like he's close to falling off a cliff. Beasley looks like he's already done even though he has some impressive grades.
Druce
Derrick Coleman, Nene, Chris Mullin, Arvydas Sabonis, LaSalle Thompson
Delap
Worthy is the biggest suspect. I think Thompson still has fruitful years remaining, as we've seen with JBC, bigs that rebound and block will continue to do so well into their 30s. Derrick Coleman is already on the downslide. PGs like Junior Harrington and Terry Porter could be due for some regression as well. One early thought for me was that Mullin would be a candidate, like when Kiki Vandeweghe just flat became unplayable, but his defensive output and grades are nowhere near as bad as Kiki's were, so I actually expect him to retain value for a couple more seasons at least.
Heebs
We've seen that most players exiting their rookie contracts don't grow very much. You can see that with a guy like Rudy Gobert, who signed a two year max after his rookie contract. He's going into his seventh year and already appears to be trending downwards. The same can be said for guys like Barney Sedran, Chris Millin, LaSalle Thompson, and Ricky Ledo.
20s
Derrick Coleman, Michael Beasley, Jonas Valanciunas, Tobias Harris, Jabari Parker, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin. Even LaSalle Thompson if someone gives him a max and is worried about him not being the same on the second half of the deal.
Fason
Beasley is already cooked. Thompson and Worthy will get maxes but they’ll need to be amnestied after 4 seasons or so. Tobias Harris has to drop off soon.
4. Which players above 33 do you think can still start for contending teams?
Trofie
A really good team could make due with Beasley or Harris but that's maybe only the Raptors and Sonics. I think Coleman is really the only good answer. Still rebounds very well and plays defense and won't kill your offense.
Druce
Maybe Jonas and DC, Nene in a pinch
Delap
Very few, honestly, in this FA class. Terry Porter, Chris Mullin, and Tobi Harris and that's it. The other 33+s all seem like key backups or minutes fillers (Antonio Davis, Derrick Coleman, Jabari Parker, Jonas Valanciunas, Michael Beasley) who are missing something necessary to get more than 12-13 mpg on a team that wants to really contend. They can still do some stat-sheet filling, but not really contribute to winning basketball.
Heebs
My starting 5 is Derrick Coleman, Antonio Daivs, Tobias Harris, Chris Mullin, and Junior Harrington
20s
Derrick Coleman. That's it, that's the tweet.
Fason
#FasBomb Ibaka and Embiid are likely going to be a FAs after being amnestied due to not fitting into Utah’s long term plans. So there’s two who still have Germany visits available.
Jonas Valanciunas can still and blocks a lot of shots. Terry Porter is going to be 33 next year, I’ve always been a fan of his game since he can rebound.
5. Who is the best FA that isn’t getting starter’s minutes? (Besides Robert Swift)
Trofie
Peyton Silva, Freeman Williams , and Bob Pettit
Druce
Probably James Worthy or Freeman Williams or even Josh Smith, his per36 is solid this year
Delap
I'm not sure that Bob Swifty is even the correct answer (not sandbagging). There are probably 3-4 candidates (including Swift). I'd include Ricky Ledo (shooting 1.21 P/TSA, averaging 2.1 steals/36) and the veteran wings Mullin and Worthy. Swift and Ledo are clearly the upside picks, but pound for pound play at this moment? It's probably one of the old farts.
Heebs
Probably Freeman Williams if I cannot choose Robert Swift.
20s
Probably Bob Pettit or Chris Mullin. Other than Swiftie, none jumps out on that level where they are worth a max IMO.
Fason
I’d say Freeman Williams or Rick Apke but their 3rd years were picked up so they won’t be FAs this year.
Worthy stands out but that is more due to Mike’s lack of time to set a DC.
Ricky Ledo's efficiency and steals are impressive. As a scoring option somewhere he could be a top 8 WS SG.
6. Two Parter: Which GM would you like to see lose their upper tier FA? Without saying your own team, where would you like to see them go?
Trofie
This is really hard as I don't like seeing elite players leave for less $. I will go with James Worthy because Mike doesn't even have him starting.
I would like to see Worthy go back to Cleveland to help Sap out. He deserves it.
Druce
I'd like to see Al Jefferson go to the Blazers as payback for Justise Winslow. Then immediately after that Frankie Sanders go to the Sonics as revenge for Al Jefferson. Then after that Dwight Howard go to the Blazers to even the score for Frankie Sanders.
Delap
I think the obvious answer this season is TimPig (sorry Pigothy). He's got 2 of them and losing one wouldn't be so bad, right? The balance of the league demands a sacrifice, or something. For the sake of this question I'd like to see him lose Dwight Howard. I'd love to see Dwight return home to Orlando and a glorious return of skrouse ... but barring that, we currently have the Bobcats, Hornets, Stags, Mavs, Blazers, Chaps, and Grizz that could be MAX players. The funniest outcome of course is Dwight leaving Tim for Fecta, so let's go with that. The 2nd funniest scenario here is Tim losing Al Jefferson to Fecta. The 3rd best option (non-Tim division) would be Ank losing LaSalle Thompson to Fecta. Between KCP and that, Fecta would become the best heel to the brights lights in MSG and that's just good for the league.
Heebs
I will be gutted if Yawn loses Livingston. So definitely NOT that.
I guess if I had to put a hex on someone I'd like it to be Ankly given his FA luck, so I'll say Freeman Williams goes to the Cougars as payback. I also wouldn't mind Tim losing Dwight based on his refusal to trade him. Dwight and Lebron would be a fun core, so I'll say Howard to Dallas.
20s
I would like to see delap lose his upper tier FA in Robert Swift because I am tired of his team being so stacked this year. He could afford to lose a big and still be a contender, but it wouldn't be quite as ridiculous in his front court. I would like to see him go to the Trail Blazers or Mavericks because majic deserves a break stealing someone else's max FA and I think dirt landing a FA one of the next couple off-seasons would be cool so he can be ready to go with LeBron.
Fason
Going to stab a couple fellow FA draft colleagues here. The two best teams this year have crazy front courts that are still young so it would be nice to see them broken up. Take the chains off Bob Swift and let Dirt have him. He seems to be back to his wheeling and dealing ways so Swift would be on another team within a couple years.
Majic had some real tough FA luck but he stuck it out so reward him with Al Jefferson.
7. Which player would benefit most from a change of scenery and different offensive focus?
Trofie
Brian Scalabrine get him on a user team that runs outside and watch him work
Druce
I think LaSalle Thompson getting out of New York would help him.
Delap
I've already hyped him some, but Frankie Ntilikina is playing in an inside offense and isn't even a scoring option (despite Druce changing his scoring options a few times already in 3021). He shoots well from outside, TOs would decrease from the strategy change, and his scoring could balloon. Is Druce trying to sabotage him slightly in his money year to get him to stay? Bold move... let's see if it pays off for him.
Heebs
Easily Dwight Howard. His biggest issues are his attrocious Pts/TSA and TOs, both of which would improve if he wasn't in an inside offense. Put Dwight in an outside offense and let his defense and rebounding thrive while minimizing his offensive usage and letting other players thrive.
20s
This was a really difficult question for me to answer, especially with the extra caveats. Maybe Antonio Davis would thrive in an Inside offense? He is scoring at 1.203 p/tsa this season for me in an Outside offense and his jump shot sucks and he doesn't shoot threes. I can imagine his numbers potentially being even better in an Inside focused offense.
Fason
Let Frankie Smokes cook and Jeff Withey looks to be out there for an outside offense.
8. You’re offering one player playing less than 10 MPG a 6 year deal at 1.3 Mil per year, who is it?
Trofie
Andre Iguodala or Viktor Khryapa
Druce
Jonas Valanciunas
Delap
The easiest answer right now is D'Angelo Russell, who is checking in at a cool 9.9mpg as I answer this question. He's a serviceable starter and above-average backup in the league and is still in his prime. In the non D'Lo division, John Collins is a pretty easy answer too, as he's only appeared in a single game for 6 minutes. He's clearly much better than that.
But, aside from those anomalies where a good player is simply not getting played by their GM, I'll go with Dalibor Bagaric. Strong rebounder, decent shot blocker... not gonna kill you on offense, and he's still 24, so you'd lock up his entire prime.
Heebs
I'd literally never make an offer like that.
20s
Al Cooper seems like he would be a solid backup PG and be able to spot start if needed in case of injury. I'll say him.
Fason
Looking at Iguodala’s per 36 stats I regret including him as cap filler in the Ibaka trade. He was pretty much an Oklahoma build with no identifiable skills. Clean up the TOs and you could have a good wing that rebounds.
Al Cooper looks like he’s hit that golden age where PGs become really good for a couple seasons before plateauing. Could get some high quality cheap labor then buy him out.
Although D’Angelo Russell’s TOs are kind of gross his P/TSA is impressive, would be a very low risk/high reward signing.
Bonus: Billy said some really mean and hurtful things about the idea of the FA draft idea. If you could break one bone in his body, which would you break and how?
Trofie
Probably his toe
Druce
I choose his Bone-r, self-inflicted hims.com accidental overdose where he has to call his doctor after 4 hours.
Delap
I'm a lover, not a fighter, so I won't pick his neck, skull, or the most painful of breaks, the femur. I won't even pick the ribs, which would be a terribly painful experience for breathing and laying down. Instead, I'll go with humor and say tailbone, just so he has to wear a giant diaper-cast for several weeks. That's the funniest outcome.
Heebs
A rib or tailbone based on whichever break first after I sew his asshole shut and keep feedin' him and feedin' him and feedin' him.
20s
His funny bone is already broken so I won't say that . I'd break his tailbone by putting him on his ass in the Oklahoma drill against trofie and I. gbr
Fason
First I just want to say that I’m not angry about Billy’s constructive criticism, he totally didn’t hurt my feelings. To answer the question, my first thought was to break all of his fingers so he couldn’t be in shout. Then I thought about going Kathy Bates in Misery on his big toes. Ultimately because I kind of like Billy I decided that I’d do him the solid of breaking his jaw to help his pudgy ass lose some weight. Again, I am not mad.
