1. Pete has won a title. Most say its pure luck, what are your thoughts on this? How many laker titles do you see in the next 10 years.
Ankly - Pete laid the foundation for a contender. That he's become some sort of super-contender getting .9 Fracs may be where some luck comes in between Wagner dream TCs and Fason's nightmare trades. I think he's got 2 years left of being certified #1 until the cap crunch becomes very real. I'll say 3 more titles over 10.
Pete - I would be arrogant to say I wasn't extremely lucky to build a team this good, but it was also a ton of patience throughout a long rebuild that got my team to this place. I don't care how many fracs I had last season, it's always lucky to make it through the playoffs. I am hoping for another title or two out of this core before salaries will force some changes, but if I can retain all of Wagner, Wilkins, Boozer and Mikan for the long haul, I should have a solid 5 year window of top-tier contender status. I will tear down after that, or maybe sooner if I want to keep things fresh.
Fason - I think Pete is incredibly lucky to have taken over a team ran by GM savant Tyler. I hope Tyler is being brought in to get a ring during the ceremony this season.
My initial reaction was to say eight, but I'm not so sure there would be much of a league should that happen. I think many of the over the hill 2.0 GMs would take their balls and go home. Pete, you did a great job staying patient waiting for those 1.1s and built an incredible team. But you've been doing this long enough to recognize that dynasties hurt the league and the GM of the dynasty. Don't join GBG and Dump who lost their fires and were each never same after their dynasties in 4.0.
Delap- Not pure luck, but it certainly helped him that we never got contraction rules changed. But, given the natural help he received in that regard… I think Pete is a good GM and hasn’t done anything stupid to ruin his chances. That said, there are still quality teams in the league and things can happen in the playoffs. I would say he wins 2 more titles in the next 4 years… then 1 more in the 6 after that for a total of 3 in 10
Trofie- Pete has gotten very lucky Via TC. However he put his team in position to win titles via his trades. He obviously hit on his top picks but people also allowed Wagner (who has somehow gotten like +70 in 3's) to drop as far as he did in the draft. Overall pete has done well. I'm going with 4 titles because Big Game Bob Cousy will likely take him out in the playoffs the other 6. GBR
2. Do you think talent inflation is ruining the league?
Ankly- Not ruining the league, but it's unfortunate. TMBSL is kind of like an economy and inflation from all the contractions has been a shock to the system. Values of things/players will naturally change over time, but we've had some wild swings lately that have been frustrating for most (other than the bastards who take advantage of contraction waivers).
Pete- I don't think it's ruining the league but it's definitely a lot easier to find competent reserves than when I first joined 6.0. I think the trade market has suffered a little and we're seeing fewer mid-round 1st for quality starter trades, but that might also be because lots of teams are valuing retaining draft picks more these days, or because the number of GMs looking to sell vastly outweighs the number looking to buy. So in summation, it's having a noticeable impact but it's mostly just leading to less player movement.
Fason - I wouldn't say ruining (I'm currently benefitting from GMs leaving and their teams being contracted or their FAs being available) but it's making it too easy to find decent to good players in FA and that's hurting trades. Hopefully the East GMs will stop quitting so things will even out soon.
Delap -Ruining is a really strong word. It isn’t good for the immediate term health of the league, that’s for sure. The FA pool needs a good plague to clear it out some and we should have already adapted to just killing contracted players. Contracted team = contracted terminal disease. The league itself isn’t ruined and teams can just adjust on the fly and we’ll see how it goes. But when guys like TJ Warren are signing for LLEs there is a clear problem. I think we’ve just had a bumper crop draft class, too, which makes everything look a bit worse than it actually is. Hopefully the drafts are neutered a tad (especially in total depth) until we have a few openings filled.
Trofie - Absolutely not. I think you'll see teams be built differently and as long as most of the caps stay in place it will be consistent to what we have. People are reluctant to trade picks after seeing what the Lakers did and nobody wants to jump in and trade them to compete with Pete. I'm glad to see Ank made a Big trade even though Ibaka is overrated.
3. We have lost some long tenured Gm's within the past couple sim seasons. Who will you miss most(if any) and who do you think returns first
Ankly - Soup is pretty synonymous with TMBSL to me, so he's definitely missed. I don't think we should count on anyone coming back though. Maybe Skrouse. More than anything, we need some new blood.
Pete - GM turnover was inevitable and I think we kept numbers up pretty well compared to 5.0's beginning. I miss Bankz being here because it would've been fun to talk shit about building a better team than his early title teams thanks in large part to the Marc Gasol trade. Mostly I miss the guys who were active and provided good content like JHB. He's someone who's quit and rejoined a bunch throughout 4.0 and 5.0, so I'll say he's most likely to come back at some point as well.
Fason - Not exactly recent but I will say I'll miss Soup the most for a variety of reasons. Things are always more competitive while he's GMing due to how much he cares. I think people like Bankz and Dump were only in the league because of Soup and then Dirt is always more active with Soup present. Lastly, he caused a lot of petty drama which is my favorite aspect of sim league.
Didn't Ward say he'd be back after college football season? If not him, I'll say Skrouse since he seemed to be pretty deep into the league and just needed a personal break.
Delap - Skrouse is #1. Thinking of you, buddy. He was an active shouter and did a job board admirably. He is absolutely the one who has left who meant the most to the league itself.
I think he comes back to the league eventually, and will always have a home here, so my guess is that he returns first. I don’t think bankz or soup are ever coming back… duc and jhb probably will, but they are more nebulous in their timetable. jhb took a 8-10 season break in 5.0 and came back like a fresh flower just in time to draft Shaq at #1… so something will happen along those lines.
I’d love Ward to come back, but that seems to be less likely than duc/jhb.
Trofie- I miss alot of the guys. But the top of the list for me is Soup/Bankz. The league is more fun when they are involved putting out content. They bring an extra edge to the league that is needed. It was like BIG noon around sim time with Bk and Bankz going at it. People complained about it and now half the chat is about Soccer half the time. Good job idiots
4. What grade would you give Majic and Druce on rookie profiles thus far?
Ankly - I don't read the profiles really, so I don't have strong feelings on this. I'll go Majic A+, Druce D+
More than anything I feel bad for the profile players to come. All their hard work comes down to a Druce/Majic coinflip. God help them if Druce writes their profile with his typical venom.
Pete -
Majic Druce
Accuracy B B+
Originality A- D
Spelling F A
Teacher's notes:
With a name like Majic, it's no wonder the boy can't spell
Druce's submissions win the superlative for "most likely to get flagged for plagerism"
In seriousness, I think they're doing fine. Would be nice if they could get one year ahead of the game but i know these are a big lift. I've got no problem with the content in any of the profiles I've seen.
Fason - Truth be told, I've only read one profile during my time in 6.0 and that was Sleepy Floyd's. But based on what everyone in shout says I'll give Majic an A+ and Druce an F.
Delap- They are doing a really good job. They might be a bit rosier than jhb was, which eric probably needs to tamp down… but they are adding a lot of color to profiles and have kept up so far. I think splitting the load makes them more likely to stick to it and I can imagine them maintaining their roles for the rest of 6.0.
Trofie- I'll be honest. I haven't really looked at the profiles to much, they seem to be doing a good job with how the system currently works and what they're given.
5. Is the new Gm Killy or Chap?
Ankly - Definitely BK. Chap wouldn't stoop to such antics.
Pete- His name begins with Kingb, so my first instinct would be that it's Killy. But BK would've known not to take the Hawks as-is. I'm guessing it's Mops back to infiltrate the league he began all those years ago.
Fason - Can I say both? As long as they don't trade violate the alt account or use it a as a farm team then I don't really care. I just want a full league.
Delap - I don’t think so, but fool me thrice shame on me. If they came via a weird post that killy made, it would make sense, because they seem to have a killy/chap weird vibe… so it could just be a birds-of-a-feather situation.
Trofie- 100% Bk
6. On a scale of 1-10 (1 unlucky ; 10 lucky) where do you feel you fall on that list ?
Ankly- 6ish?
I feel like I'm neutral on FA luck for the most part (In: Love, Out: Kemp Jr.)
Nobody contracted when my team was bad, so no free star players came my way. Not that I would have taken them anyone given I have actual principles.
The one place where I've had quite good luck I'd say is FA Re-signing with Kyrie, Embiid, Caron all coming back stress-free. That's nice.
TC Luck has generally been good for me aside from Cenk's descent
Irving being this good is somewhat lucky but was also a bit predictable.
So yeah, above average luck all things considered but nothing special.
Pete - I'm an easy 10. I've had a very lucky run of 6.0. I've landed a couple max guys in FA (Wes and Penny), I made a series of deals where I sold a player just ahead of their value cratering, and I've had some insane TC luck with my string of top draft picks. I also failed to win a title when I had .67 fracs, so it hasn't been all roses, but I recognize I will probably never have such a string of good luck again so I'm enjoying it while it lasts.
Fason - I'd give myself a 8. I did get JBC through contraction then kind of, sort of royally screwed it up for myself and the rest of the league by trading him to the Lakers, but c'est la vie. I also got Jennings through contraction. Luckiest thing for me was JHB quitting then unquitting just to amnesty Derrick Coleman who then took my max instead of Dirt's.
Delap - On the whole of 6.0 I’d say I’m around a 3… but lately I’ve been hitting on a 7 or 8? I tend to take more risks than most in drafting and get seduced by sexy potential. Sometimes it bites me, sometimes it pays off. I’ve had virtually no FA luck at all in 6.0… but relying on FA hasn’t been something I’ve ever really tried. I think I just hit my biggest jackpot though, with the announcement regarding the 3019 draft class. Lew Alcindor coming to the North is a big-time luck win for me.
Trofie- 5 . The recent Tc's have been rough and the playoffs haven't gone the way I'd have hoped but overall its been fine. Ive been able to snag elite players in FA(Jeremi Grant) and I haven't lost anyone I've offered via FA. The early drafts were good to me, but things have changed since the cancer came into the league(pete)
7. We are 15 years in. Please list your top 5 gm's and why.
Ankly - Bankz ,Ank,Pete
^Top 3 not really ordered. Only 3 dynasty caliber builds thus far with combination of elite teams with longevity rather than a 1-2 year blip. Next two are tough. Bankz proceeded to mess it up a bit but that doesn't offset his reign.
Chap probably gets it for me as he has the rings and overall just had a very impressive stretch of good teams from basically the beginning of 6.0. Him having a 2nd ring gets wins him the tiebreaker.
Other would be Trof or Druce.
RNG has been cruel to Trof. From a frac standpoint he absolutely belongs up here but the zero titles is tough and his current team is going up in smoke. In the end, I go Druce. I think he's underrated by Fracs as I seem to remember he made a big late season trade for Wrenn for his first title which Fracs doesn't capture. He screwed his friends over along the way, but of all the people who went all-in on the Creation Draft, he had the smoothest transition to a 2nd contending team. That team probably more of a fringe contender but the playoff gods rewarded him, so he gets spot #5.
Pete- I'm only ranking current GMs because everyone who quit is too soft.
1. BK/Chap - the hivemind has won 4 times. BK drafted really well for a stretch and was able to keep his team in contention for a solid window. Chaps got Theo in FA and ran the west for much of the first decade. Together, the 2BF crew has been a rousing success.
2. Druce - he's the only GM who's built two different title-winning cores, he's top 5 in regular season wins and #1 in postseason wins. Is firmly in the "blow it up 1 year too early rather than 1 year too late" camp, but that has served him well so far.
3. Trofie - no title to show for it but he's built 2 or 3 different cores that have been near the top of the league. Just hasn't gotten a lucky run through the postseason. 2nd most fracs and would be 1st easy if not for two dominant Lakers seasons.
4. Ank - people shit on him for not winning with Bojan/Maye but Ank showed how valuable it is to stack top picks within a certain window and if he keeps this team together he can easily grab another ring or two. That's a better outcome than what he would've gotten by hanging on to Maye and Bojan for longer and hoping it worked out.
5. 20s/Heebs - grouping them together because they're both tied with the most regular season wins in 6.0 and have made the playoffs every year, but neither has broken through with a title. Heebs has gotten closer with a finals appearance, but both teams have stayed competitive while retooling throughout the first 15 seasons.
Fason - 1. Billy - Has two titles in spite of the league doing everything it can to keep screwing him over.
Huge gap
2. Trofie - This is his RT and he's built good teams in spite of some really bad luck with TCs.
3. Druce - Two titles with two different cores.
4. Ank - Able to build a great team for himself while also giving extremely helpful advice to every other team.
5. Pet Chap - The only other GM to have two titles and the train doesn't look to be slowing down with Gates & Harrell.
Delap - I will exclude those who left in disgrace, because screw them. I also think we have a bevy of guys who understand the game and consistently put it together, so a Top 5 is nebulous and I’m not tied to any of them holding down their spot above anyone else. I’m also ranking them purely on sim success, not other contributions to the league (shout/articles/duties, etc.).
5. Odin: He’s also been consistent and despite his loathing of the draft process, has drafted well when forced into it.
4. Chap: The student has surpassed the teacher. He’s had pretty consistent draft success and managed to maintain a solid core for a really long time, which few other others have managed without making major sacrifices because of the cap. He’s tailed off recently, because nothing gold can stay, but I expect him to be back in the thick of it in a year or two.
3. Heebs: He knocks draft pick after draft pick out of the park, but hasn’t been able to get over the hump. I think he’s had some of the worst playoff luck of anyone, as his teams are always in the thick of it, but never quite the best.
2. Druce: a model of consistency out in BC, Drucey Druce has made all the right moves to stay relevant and compete for titles in the majority of 6.0 seasons.
1. 20s: He’s been incredibly consistent across 6.0 and his team always makes sense. He has been prudent in lining up draft picks and peaking at the right time. Adding KAT now and owning the 3017 1.2 ensures that he’ll stay loaded for a bit.
Trofie - I'm not going to include "retired" Gm's.
1. Pete/software- has built the best team in this leagues history. Will have continued success. Hasn't lost a trade. Almost at #2 because of the Nene deal.
2.Ank - Has only 1 title but his teams are good. Traded off at the right time and refocused once he realized he couldn't win unless he had multiple #1's in elite Drafts. Wasted Bojan.
3.Billy - has had some underwhelming teams but they just "win" . I don't think either of his top teams stack up against the Lakers or Knicks. Should have traded for Kyrie.
4. Druce- has multiple titles and is patient. Has gotten some some playoff luck but that will happen when you have the same competitive team year after year. His team now won't likely win anything but if you can keep churning out above avg seasons that will keep ND fans happy.
5. Chap- Multiple titles. Seems to have the most playoff luck out of anyone. A good drafter who maybe held onto the core a little to long but doesn't put his team in bad positions via trades
8. Say one nice thing about Pete
Ankly - Winning a TMBSL title while sipping a cocktail on the beach in Mexico is a definite power move.
Pete- He married well.
Fason- He has a decent sense of humor...I guess. Occasionally he'll say something funny.
Delap - He has promised to deliver a spooky board, just in time for Halloween. He’s a real man of the people.
Trofie - Pete has never given up on South Carolina even though most have.
9. Say two bad things about Pete
Ankly - 1. Handsome Pete? More like handed-some titles by washed up GMs Pete.
2. Pete once interrupted my trip in Europe so that I could buy him Chance the Rapper tickets. Very inconsiderate.
Pete - He spends way too much time on sim league. His wife married poorly.
Fason- The guy is an f'n coward for not opting for the expansion option. He had way too much experience to take the silver spoon route. An honorable GM would pull themselves up by their bootstraps and lie in wait for elite players to hit contraction. Then trade said players for below market deals until the next contraction.
Second, he's super greedy, and we all know why. But I won't say anymore as I don't want to offend our new GM and his religious beliefs.
Delap - No and never.
Trofie- While in Chicago Pete won his first title with the Raptors, he bought a bottle of champagne and made us feel happy for him even though he knocked us out of the playoffs. I was getting beauty sleep and he thought it was appropriate to make a big deal about it and at one point woke me up. A couple of people in the group were so upset by this that they never returned to sim league (buster, bruns, ocho)
10. If you could make one change to TMBSL , what would it be?
Ankly - We should automate Improvements somehow where you input what you want in a form then it's aggregated. This would be helpful to eric (I assume) and we could also use that for improvements history which is typically a mess.
Pete - I will continue to say this until it gets changed. Amnesties need to be more expensive and/or harder to use. It makes it a no-brainer to sign guys to longer term deals if you can wipe them off the books with a cool 50k. If I was more worried about balancing my cap for the long-term, it would force me into a lot tougher decisions about retaining a guy like JBC at the risk of being unable to resign Nique or Mikan. Now I can resign him and clear his salary whenever he gets too old or I need the funds elsewhere. It shouldn't be this easy to get out of cap hell.
Fason - I would tweak scouting or get rid of it all together. By tweak I mean don't give the entire build of the player, maybe a GM can only pick five attributes or each position has a standard five that we can see if scouting. Scouting makes things boring and reduces this even more to just trying to game the software.
Delap - I’m gonna sneak two in.
1. GM contracts that are binding for the duration so we don’t have random quitters. I hate quitters**.
2. Odin has floated the idea of franchise-level upgrades that would cost a ton of money or something like that… training facilities, new arenas, an extra asst coach, etc. This could be a way to have another use for bucks and add diversity to the types of franchises we have.
Trofie- I'd like to see profiles change. I'd like to see stats posted, and a little blip about how much they thing the players game/potential can grow and that's it. I'd also like to see in season extenstions/resigns. Is that possible? Probably not. But I'd like to see it.
