Good morning GMs and welcome to the doll-drums of sim league otherwise known as the draft.
We at the Report have partnered with some of our good friends and fellow GMs TimPig, 20s, DelapThrows, and [Inur]Fason to bring you something to pass the time while waiting for free agency to begin - and what better content than a fantasy draft of those potential free agents!
We had hoped that this round table would be more timely and prior to free agents resigning - but we had 3 Stoners in the original roster and needed to pair that down to 1 to get the process moving. And hey - maybe I can keep Ankly busy enough this weekend that he forgets to accept Butler's resign. I'll see what I can do!
The rules were simple - in order of who accepted the invitation to participate we selected from the potential free agent list during the regular season with a snake for the second round only. We selected 10 players and each player had to be on our depth chart. Below are each GM's depth chart with commentary from the other participants. Finally at the bottom is the draft itself.
Without further ado, here is our round table.
Team 20s:
C: Yao Ming / Nikola Vucevic / Donatas Motiejunas
PF: Carlos Boozer / Nikola Vucevic / Donatas Motiejunas
SF: Tayshaun Prince / Kareem Rush / Arron Afflalo
SG: Arron Afflalo / Kareem Rush / Kendall Gill
PG: Diante Garrett / Vasilije Micic / Diante Garrett
Scoring Option #1: Carlos Boozer
Scoring Option #2: Yao Ming
Scoring Option #3: Nikola Vucevic
Pace: Very Fast*(requires Asst. Coach)

Focus: Inside
Fason on 20s - I like 20s team the best, I think his team makes by far the most sense as far as roster construction. Vucevic who I completely forgot will be a free agent is the perfect third big for this team. With the dominant bigs and Tayshaun at SF, they remind me of the Bobcats minus the scrubs. Only negative I could come up with is that if Afflalo were to have a bad inside TC then this team would have little to no scoring from their wings/perimeter players.
Tim on 20s - I think this is the strongest roster top to bottom and has a clear inside identity. Yao and Boozer provide star power down low and plenty of offensive firepower, while Yao, Prince, and Afflalo are all plus defenders. Garrett is an excellent choice for an inside point guard and I'm disappointed I glossed over him when reviewing potential fits for my team. Vooch is a great option off the bench and could feasibly average 22+ points per game or step in should an injury occur.
Delap on 20s - Can man live alone on inside buckets from 3 players? This roster is pushing that theory... but could actually be successful at doing so. Wing scoring is negligible and the PGs are just there to facilitate the big men. However, Boozer + Yao = the best big duo in this exercise by a good margin. The defense should be solid, with only Boozer being a noticeable weakness in the starting lineup (Vuc isn't good either). If one of the bigs gets in foul trouble they could have problems scoring, but no team in this exercise is immune to that sort of thing.
Heebs on 20s - This is a team with a clear identity. Inside scoring with a tough defense. Yao and Boozer give the 1-2 inside scoring punch with enough defense to not be embarrassed, and Afflalo is a great third option. Not to mention he and Tayshaun will provide a nasty perimeter defense. Overall I like this draft the most of the 5 teams.
20s Squared - I think I have one of the strongest teams. I was originally thinking Dajuan Wagner would probably be my pick at 1.4, but Yao fell to my surprise. I think the Yao/Boozer 1-2 punch set me up with a big scoring duo that is extremely efficient and strong FT shooters. Both are pretty good rebounders as well. Once I had that core, I wanted to surround them with guys who would defend, rebound, and not turn the ball over. I feel like Garrett is a great PG for an inside team and he already won a title playing this role with the Hawks. Afflalo and Prince form a strong defensive wing duo with Afflalo adding the ability to chip in some points. Vuc is my third scorer and a solid backup big. The biggest weakness of this team is a lack of shot blocking from the bigs with Yao the only guy who is really a big factor there, but I think the rest makes up for that.
Team Heebs:
Greg Oden / Luther Wright / Joakim Noah
Andre Blatche / Luther Wright / Andre Blatche
Mike Dunleavy Jr / Rodney Hood / Matt Barnes
Matt Barnes / J.R. Giddens / George Hill
Jay Williams / George Hill / Jay Williams
1. Andre Blatche
2. Matt Barnes
3. Jay Williams

20s on Heebs - This is probably my second favorite team and it is very balanced, but something about just feels off. Seems like they are missing those elite top of the line players. Blatche is a stud and a very good pick and I get why Barnes went so high in a weak wing class. Jay Williams might be the biggest name PG and will probably get paid the most in FA, but I wouldn’t really rather have him than someone like Garrett or Roberts. Oden and Dunleavy are good role players and this team has decent depth as well.
Heebs on Heebs - I made the mistake of chasing wings because I knew they weren't great outside of the top few (who had all been drafted) in this class. Barnes is good but I reached there and paid. Looking back, I wish I would have gone Blatche and Boozer to build a team similar to 20s. Live and you learn. Other than that it is a classic Heebs team.
Delap on Heebs - I think this is the weakest team in the bunch, just because there isn't that A-list elite player to focus on. Blatche is the best player on the team... while Barnes and Williams can both contribute as two-way players. Williams was the best PG available, though, so he should have a marked advantage at that position. None of the bench are inspiring, just a bunch of guys/dudes. Maybe he can still a win or two, but I don't see this team competing against the others in this exercise consistently.
Fason on Heebs - I'm giving Heebs the nod for most collective talent. Being Matt Barnes' biggest supporter, I obviously liked that pick a lot. Besides Yao, Blacthe is the most well-rounded big in this potential FA class. I'm indifferent to Williams, but he's the best PG in this class. We all know how big of a shot-blocking whore Heebs is so Oden was a nice complimentary piece to grab.
Tim on Heebs - This looks like a classic Heebs team with some strong shown defense and, to their credit, some solid defensive numbers as well. My concern with this team is the scoring punch. Blatche is a talented scorer but I think he overperformed a bit this season and Barnes seems like the only viable #2. Oden, Dunleavy, and the depth guys seem like offensive liabilities and Jay is just average there.
Team Delap:
C: Andrew Bynum / Larry Smith / Andrew Bynum
PF: DeAndre Jordan / Drew Gooden / DeAndre Jordan
SF: Jordan Hamilton / Michael Brooks / Jordan Hamilton
SG: Dajuan Wagner / Adam Haluska / Dajuan Wagner
PG: Marcus Smart / Deron Williams / Marcus Smart
1. Dajuan Wagner
2. Andrew Bynum
3. Drew Gooden

Fason on Delap (nee Odin) - I really liked Odin's top two picks and think that was the best combo of 1st and 2nd round picks. Then I think Odin lost interest and the quality of picks started to drop off and the team doesn't make too much sense together. Delap did the best he could to grab some depth. Wagner could/would probably average 35 playing next to DeAndre Jordan and Marcus Smart.
20s on Delap - I really like Wagner, Bynum and Jordan (even though he was taken too high IMO). The Haluska pick was awful and basically killed this team. I would start Michael Brooks over Hamilton and I don’t know what Delap sees in Marcus Smart. Delap was dealt a tough hand taking over mid draft and because of that, I think this is possibly the worst team.
Tim on Delap - Like Team Heebs, I don't see much scoring outside of Dajuan Wagner. Bynum is listed as the #2 option which proves my point as his career pts/tsa is only 1.065. I'd probably be more inclined to start Gooden on this team (and maybe even Michael Brooks) to give Wagner some help. I probably also bench Smart for a steadier hand in Deron, which further hurts the defense but with Bynum entrenched in the middle and DeAndre as the #3 big, I think you'll still be fine on that side of the ball.
Delap on Delap - I don't love my team, but it is what it is when you take over halfway. I would've made the same Top 2 picks though! Wagner is going to be asked to carry the scoring load, with all of the other plus scorers manning the second unit. If Wagner can shine, I like the defensive pieces around him in the starting lineup. Smart turns it over, but is the best defensive PG in this group (and possibly the whole league). DJ and Bynum are very stout down low. Hamilton is a sneaky decent two-way player who will be asked to score for the starting group.
Heebs on Delap - Wagner was an obvious pick and Delap has two strong defensive bigs that play good post D, block shots, and rebound. I fear he's missing a second scorer though, which may push Bynum into a role he's not fit to fill. I like Smart's defense but I can't stomach those TOs without some scoring punch to back it. Haluska is a terrible pick and is probably the reason this team looks worse than it should.
Team Fason:
C: Jason Jennings / Clint Capela / Nene Hilario
PF: Shawn Kemp Jr / Clint Capela / Nene Hilario
SF: Danny Granger / George Lynch / Danny Granger
SG: Caron Butler / John Salmons / Caron Butler
PG: Joseph Fogarty / Travis Diener / Travis Diener
1. Caron Butler
2. Danny Granger
3. Shawn Kemp Jr

20s on Fason - The other top tier team, I really like it outside of PG. No idea what to make of Fogarty. They definitely have the best wing combo and that is where they will have to make their hay. Bigs were deep in the pool so they are still okay there, but clearly a cut below some of the other teams and I think they might ha e a hard time keeping up inside. Fogarty’s turnovers could be an issue. This team would have a chance in a tournament though due to the wings.
Tim on Fason - After Team 20s, I think Fason may have the strongest starting lineup, even if Kemp and Granger are getting a bit long in the tooth. Both are still excellent inside scoring options and I'd probably list them before Butler as scoring options. Butler's a stud defender and rebounder, but his offense is only average or slightly above. I'm not a fan of the PG situation as both Fogarty and Diener look like PGs built for outside scoring teams, so I'd have liked to see this team nab a non-turnover, non-shoot PG, which is what I tried to do with guys like Exum and Roberts.
Delap on Fason - I think I give Fason the nod as the best overall team. He's the most balanced team in terms of scoring punch in the starting lineup, as all 5 players can contribute on that end of the court. The bench is pure defense, though... so if his coach goes long minutes with those 5 in, he could struggle to score. Gotta go with a staggered lineup for sure. He's the only lineup I see here that could credibly run inside, balanced, or outside. This team isn't built for the long-haul... but Kemp/Granger are absolutely still value pieces and winning players in the short run.
Heebs on Fason - Welcome to Lob City. The inside scoring on this team is insane and I expect every opposing team to be in foul trouble by about minute 3. Fason's squad is up there with 20s as the best draft in the bunch. Fogarty has fallen to earth a little in his rookie season, but he's still a nice value pick for this team of otherwise elite scorers. They will have a little trouble defensively, but you don't need much defensively if you're putting up 130 a night efficiently like I expect they will.
FasonFason -I picked Caron over Wagner due to wanting flexibility with the rest of my picks. I was hoping one of the top tier bigs would be around with my next pick so I could put together an inside focused team, was not to be. Then I was just picking BPA since I'd be balanced with the two wings. Not crazy about the bigs I picked, but I think my team would come down to how good Joseph Fogarty becomes.
Team Tim:
C: Al Horford / Amar'e Stoudemire / Al Horford
PF: Jabari Parker / Luis Scola / Jabari Parker
SF: Dale Ellis / Danilo Gallinari / Dale Ellis
SG: Andrew Wiggins / Kyle Singler / Andrew Wiggins
PG: Dante Exum / Brian Roberts / Dante Exum
1. Jabari Parker
2. Dale Ellis
3. Al Horford

Fason on Tim (nee BK) - Jabari was a good first round pick but those next two picks (Horford & Ellis) were diarrhea. Had Billy swallowed his pride and taken Bynum over Horford he could have had a chance to pick the best team. By the time Tim came in there was no chance for resuscitation.
20s on Tim - Another guy who was given a raw deal having to take over for bk halfway through the draft. The Horford and Gallinari picks were as bad as Jordan and Haluska. Tim did pretty well after that point and I really like his PG duo of Exum and Roberts. I would actually start Roberts over Exum myself. Would be interesting to see how Wiggins would do as a starter. Gallinari being SF locked really hurts his value. I applaud Tim for stepping in and doing what he could, but I think this team would be battling it out with team Delap for last place.
Heebs on Tim - After Jabari, BK did no favors for Tim in this mock draft. Horford was a reach but Gallinari was an attrocious pick - honestly you're better off with Adam Haluska. I had my eye on Exum to play the role that George Hill wound up playing for the Heebs Squad as backup PG and second-unit scoring threat. Ellis is a big name but I imagine it's sort of like the Wizards bringing MJ out of retirement - just a publicity stun for a bad team. Delap and Tim might as well just play a game of 1v1 with Parker and Wagner - it would be more interesting.
Tim on Tim - The backcourt is icky and there are a lot of other directions I think I'd have gone with the Horford pick. Parker is a stud scorer but offers little in the way of defense, so I'd probably have tried to find someone a bit more balanced with that second pick. If that could've been done successfully, I think Ellis is a fine third pick and would be a nice second scoring option. Bynum looks like a fantastic fit here and compensates for any weakness in Jabari's game. Also, I can't for the life of me understand Gallinari going 18th overall when he hasn't played starter minutes in 5 years and has a career high 16.5 points per game. He's a terrible fit here and this team would've been better off with any of the guys picked shortly after he was selected.
Delap on Tim - I think Tim played his hand very well and ended up with a solid team. He'll struggle defensively, except for at PG, where he snagged two solid defenders. Horford is still a ++ offender, Ellis and Gallo can both get buckets on the wing (though Gallo was WAY overdrafted), and Jabari is one of the more elite players in this group. I don't love Wiggins, I'd rather see Singler start there and maybe flip the PGs so Exum could super-sub at the #2.
