Rookie Draft Performance, Pick Value Chart, Best and Worst Picks (468 views)

Similarly to how I tracked performance for Creation Draft picks, I've built a table to track Rookie Draft performance. Basically we chart every draft pick's first 4 years of production (picks 1-58, any third round picks tracked as pick 59, undrafted free agents as pick 60). I then pull in their Wins created in each of those seasons, this metric being for any player with 300 minutes played, their WS/48 extrapolated to 36 mpg and 82 games. I then track their average wins created per season and their total "Contract Wins"...which equals 4 seasons of wins for first round picks, 3 seasons for 2nd/3rd round picks, and 1 season of wins for UDFAs, to match the potentially guaranteed amount of seasons you can control each of these players.

Then I pivoted the data and charted the average total contract wins by draft selection and graphed those with a logarithmic trend line to produce an "expected contract win" value for each draft slot.

This chart is an attempt to start building a trade value chart for picks...but it obviously needs some tinkering. Definitely not trying to suggest that the equivalent value of the #1 pick is the #2 pick and a mid-2nd. While you could expect roughly the equivalent total wins out of those two combinations, there is more value in the concentration of wins in a single player. Just not totally sure how to quantify that yet so this is a rough draft of the "Trade Chart". As I kind of figure out how to accurately represent the added value of concentrated wins in the higher picks and develop a methodology for that, I'll try to republish.

So now we have every single player and the team that selected them charted with both the expected wins they should have created based on draft slot and the actual wins they created (if they haven't played the entire 4 years of their rookie deal I extrapolated out future seasons of their contract based on average wins per season to this point in their career)...so we can make some hasty judgments about how each team has performed so far in the rookie draft.

If you're in Chrome, zoom out to 90% to get the raw data chart wide enough for all columns to fit

Also if you c/p the data into excel to mess with it make sure you add the space back to MartynasAndriuskevicius if you're doing any vlookups against that column...without removing the space his name was too large to fit in the column without tabbing everything over another slot

Yep. I have thought about that a lot but just don't know a way around it...

I mean if you really wanted to get max value out of a 2nd and you just end up drafting a player who never even plays I guess the data suggests maybe the better route was trading it?

For example mine is really low but I haven't made a top 18 pick yet and most of my selections came as second rounders in one season of play when we were real shitty so they won't get the boost of playing on a good team to their WS total.

There's kind of compounding effect for guys like Bankz where he was so elite for a stretch even if he took a 2nd rounder and played him just over 300 minutes it'll probably overstate how good his picks really were.

There was a vlookup issue there...fixing it now.

I had Muresan in one file and Mureșan in another so it didn't pull in his WS data

Include PS stats?

Issues with that are teams don't play their actual best players so it makes tracking defensive wins wonky and inconsistent with the actual data...and Eric doesn't calculate wins for PS and I just rip off his WS calculations so I don't have win share data for PS.

Everything updated...between this and an issue with calculating average wins in years players haven't played with there were some significant changes to everything but it's all updated now.
