Test Sims for Dummies: (How to Upgrade and Draft your new Point Guard)
Today I’m going to be simplifying the Mechanics article and possibly giving the new GMs something quick and easy to look at. It should help guide them into putting the proper upgrades and camps into their prospects. I also think it will guide them in the coming years to help pick out the perfect prospect for them.
I have two players I’m going to test all in the same situation. I built a decent prospect that you could see in a draft and maxed out attributes and tested them to see what they improved in and how it helped their usage and field goal percentages.
The PGs will have 80 passing and 80 handles with their Inside Capped and 80 Jumper. They are playing alongside the 03 rookies in an Inside Focus offense and Very Fast.
Standard Build: First we are going to be looking at this standard build of our PG. He is 6’1” at 175 LBS. A decent build you may see outside the top 10. As you can see he didn’t have a lot of MPG and his usage is low. As we test our guy with max attributes, we will see things rise and fall including minutes and percentages.
Inside Scoring: The max Inside disappointed me to be quite honest. I’m a firm believer that Inside reigns and I will tell ya I’m a bit surprised. I think this shows it does help to have your Jumper maxed to go along side your high inside scoring. The FG% isn’t terrible here but I did suspect better. If you’re dealing with a wing I would still highly suggest you put a lot of your upgrades into inside.
Jump Shot: As you can see the max Jump Shot has really helped out our prospect. I always knew the jumper was important but this test it did wonders. I think everyone knows how important this attribute is so we don’t have to stay on it for long. Just a friendly reminder that upgrading the Jump Shot is still very important for your player. When your deciding on a prospect sometimes a good jumper can be better than high inside.
Three Pointer: Upgrading our prospect beyond the arc did wonders. When it comes to this test maybe we will see more GMs go after the 3pt upgrade instead of an auto meta +30 inside. I think having high 3pt is very important for your GMs that want to run Outside. I understand the league is an inside offense monster at the moment but even with our prospect playing Inside focused it helped.
Quickness: I was always curious what a lot of quickness would do on a player. I think it shows here that it’s a tool to keep your player on the court. You won’t have to worry about the 28 minute per games and that type of thing. In the test it helped some other categories in our prospect but that could have been from a solid sim. If you’re looking at a prospect with no quickness vs a guy with a lot maybe you can come look at this test and you can make a decision that way.
Max Rebounding: A lot of GMs love their rebounding wings or PGs. Here I decided to max a PGs rebounds and see what it will give you. I wouldn’t look at usage here because that’s not what rebounds do. A shorter PG with max can get you around 6 per 36 with this particular build. I personally don’t look at rebounding PGs unless they are already good every where else.
Jumping: Surprisingly enough jumping did not help our prospects minutes or usage and that’s a bit of a surprise. I think quickness could be more important at this PG position. This test could help you down the road with prospects and seeing low jumping. I know some GMs would argue this but i’m still a firm believer that jumping is icing to make a crap player look good or a way to make a good player look bad. I’m sure it helps in other ways but in this case it didn’t help much.
Strength: Another attribute another shock for me. I know strength helps big men way more than PGs but I’m still shocked it didn’t help his minutes per game. I was always a firm believer it would help but not on this test. I think this could change some GMs minds on strength with their wings and PGs but on the other hand I highly doubt it. Just a friendly reminder for those who are drafting soon and looking at prospects…Strength for your PG doesn’t really matter. There are other prospects that have solid strength and still low in minutes played. Keep this in mind if you have the decision to boost strength or 3pt shot for your players. (ignore this for big men)

- I know the league loves it’s tall PGs so I decided to test the same build but is 6’7” and 200 LBS. After the test results I really didn’t find much of a difference. If you looking at a slightly better PG that’s 6’1 I think you should go with that instead of the slightly worst guy that is taller. I’ve always been a big fan of the taller guy but after this I don’t really care. If you have the same prospect but taller, heck yea I’d go with the taller player. The big thing I wanted to test was rebounding and they both checked out as very similar.
Standard Build: not a big difference here. A little bit better FG% but probably all RNG.
Inside Scoring: Better but still not as good as I thought and not much difference than the shorter prospect.
Jump Shot: The Jump Shot test for the tall Bush didn't go as well as the Biden. Just a reminder that this is a small sample size but did give him better usage and a little better fg%.
Three Point Shot: I think at this point 3pt shot upgrades are nice. The taller not necessary better at this point.
Quickness: The test sims for our tall prospect isn't doing that well. Quickness shows us it's not necessary better percentages or efficiency but better usage and probably better Free Throw Attempts.
Max Rebounding: The taller Point Guard didn't do much better. He is still around 6 boards per 36. If you want your PG to get you 6 rebounds your going to have to max the attribute not find a taller PG.
Jumping: Still no help with efficiency with Jumping, but it does help with usage and that's a good thing when looking at prospects. It didn't help our prospect just like our height didn't either.
Strength: Maybe it's taller and stronger that helps our prospect. It def did not hurt during this test. I didn't see an increase in minutes but his FG% did get better. It might be something to keep an eye on with PG prospects. taller and stronger is better than shorter and quicker.
