Update Schedule: Sims 3, 6, 9, 12

Hello, and welcome to TimPig's Sophomore Staircase™! I like looking at players who are in their second year in the league as they've usually received significant playing time, upgrades, camps, and gone through two training camps. I'll be doing my best to update this four times per season, on a schedule that has as little crossover with Delap's Rookie Ladder as possible.

The 3002 class has produced quite a few nice looking players, though I'm not sure I see any with a ceiling as high as Antoine Carr, Dale Ellis, Clyde Drexler, Marc Gasol, or Al Horford. In other words, I see quite a few guys who would make great second or third options on championship teams, including possibly some guys who are currently in the Honorable Mention category but are certainly candidates to make the Staircase™ in future updates.

Summary: Ransey battles Wes Matthews for the top PG spot in the class. Matthews is performing admirably this year, but I don't expect it to keep up. Ransey appears to have a higher floor with better rebounding and fewer turnovers. Efficiency is a tad lower than you'd hope for, but he's definitely a starter in this league for a long time.

Summary: All-around solid big as he's tied for fourth in the class in rebounding, possesses about average efficiency, and puts up enough bleals to not be a defensive liability. High floor, low ceiling player who would be a great third big and a serviceable second.

Summary: This one may come as a shock as he finished 3rd in the final rookie ladder, but I'm not as high on Toney as others. His efficiency is 24th in the class among (my definition of) eligible players, doesn't play defense, and turns it over a pretty good amount. He's a good candidate to drop off of the Staircase™ entirely if his efficiency, which he pairs with high volume, doesn't increase.

Summary: Excellent efficiency combined with high volume, Ruland was a sneaky good draft pick by Mike. Turnovers aren't awful for 6.0, especially considering his current usage. I draw the line for "average" rebounding right around 10, so I don't consider him a liability there either. Defense isn't good, but overall, he's a fine second or very good third big.

Summary: Bouie is another player who will probably drop in future updates as his efficiency and rebounding are both likely going to drop a bit in future sims. Turnovers are a bit higher than you'd prefer, but he's showing some defensive chops with 1.7 bleals per game to go along with excellent scoring so far.

Summary: Surprise, surprise! I'm a huge fan of Woodson now that he's received upgrades and is actually playing. Good efficiency, solid rebounding for a shooting guard, very good defense, and no turnovers to speak of. He's solidly above average in every category so far but not spectacular in any. If he keeps this up, he probably gets a bump in future updates.

Summary: Unquestionably the best rebounder in the class, he's averages a full 1.3 rebounds more than Jawann Oldham, who is second in the class on the glass. Efficiency has improved with upgrades and he should be a very good player for the Nets for a long time. Defense and turnovers aren't a huge liability.

Summary: A good scorer and rebounder with positional versatility, decent turnovers, and not much by way of defense. Brooks' strengths outweigh his deficiencies and I expect him to be an excellent player for a very long time. Definitely a max player.

Summary: McHale's overall efficiency should rise and he's appeared to take a step in both defense and rebounding in year two while his turnovers have decreased, though that is surely due in some part to better teammates around him. McHale is a nice building block for Sap and his young Cavs team.

Summary: I have a huge crush on Kiki, whose efficiency I'd call unbelievable if he didn't put up similar numbers as a rookie. Like Brooks, he can also play shooting guard and while his rebounds are lower, his turnovers are half of what Brooks offers, which is a tradeoff I'd take any day of the week. For me, Kiki appears firmly planted in first place, even if the coach keeps him on a minutes restriction for his entire career.

Giving Woodson a top 5 with an extremely small sample size but ignoring Matthews stellar start just triggers me...carry on

Yeah I thought it was also a little inconsistent that Matthews fast start is blown off but Roosevelt and Woodson got ranked for their good starts and got a comment "well this will likely change over time", which is the reason matthews isnt ranked apparently

Bouie's numbers are comparable to last year's except in FT% where he received upgrades, which would indicate that his success is sustainable.

Woodson has been good since he started receiving playing time.

Matthews has been bad for what amounts to essentially 80% of his career.

It's a Lil unfair to talk about his 3pt%. Of course that's not gonna stay. If he shoots 49% as a whole that's really good. For not being fully upgraded he is pretty dam good.

You have to view him in his entirety.

If - and that’s a big if - his FG% stays at 49%, that’s great for him. It wasn’t there last year and it wasn’t there in preseason.

If it doesn’t get there, his rebounding and defense aren’t good and his turnovers are awful.

how you say he is over rated and too high is absolutely beyond me.  PTS #2, REB #3, AST #2, Tied for #1 in steals, #1 in blocks, $5 in TO, #6 in FG%, #1 in PER. He is 1, 2 or 3 in 6 of 11 categories. but you are right he is over rated...GTFO.

Summary: Ransey continues to be a solid but somewhat unspectacular point guard. Turnovers aren't an issue, he's a decent rebounder for the position, and can score when needed. Scarcity at the point guard position gives him the edge over his teammate, Andrew Toney.

Summary: Gminski is coming off the bench this year but scoring like a mad man, ranking second in the class at an impressive 1.189 pts/TSA. He falls short to most of the other big men in the class in rebounding and turns it over more than anyone, but excellent scoring and decent enough defense earn him the 9th spot.

8. Jawann Oldham - Minnesota Timberwolves

Summary: I'm not a huge fan of D/R bigs who don't contribute offensively, but this class gets really crowded right around this spot and Oldham stands out as far and away the best defender in the class and one of the best in the league. He's moved around a bit early in his career but should thrive in the T-Wolves outside-focused offense.

Summary: Matthews' rebounding and handling still leave a lot to be desired, but his scoring has remained good long enough that he earns the 7th spot on the Staircase™. For Matthews, you have to hope his scoring remains good to very good and his final +20 is able to fix his handles.

Summary: It's disappointing that McHale's efficiency hasn't risen after a slow start. His volume, rebounding, and turnovers are all similar to Ruland's but he's a better defender. I still feel like McHale is better than what he's shown this year, but I may feel differently after one or two more updates.

Summary: There's quite a gap between Ruland and those ranking ahead of him. I begrudgingly give him the #5 spot due to the high volume on solid efficiency (7th in the class) and plus rebounding, but he does pair those with poor defense and high turnovers.

Summary: I didn't expect Mahorn to enter the conversation with Larry Smith as the best rebounder in the class, but here we are. Identical efficiency to Brooks and few turnovers for a big man who shoots with some volume. One underrated attribute of Mahorn's is that his coach is actually willing to play him 32+ minutes per game.

Summary: Brooks' hold on #3 is weakening as Mahorn creeps closer and closer to the podium. For now, Brooks outranks him due to his excellent rebounding for the position (only Estes, Wrenn, Cooke, Gates, Drexler, and Witherspoon are comparable) and plus efficiency.

Summary: Larry jumps ahead of teammate Michael Brooks and fellow power forward Kevin McHale for the #2 spot after sim 6. Surprisingly, Mahorn cleans the glass better than Smith, but that may have something to do with their teammates as the Nets feature a stronger group of rebounders. Arguably the best rebounder and an excellent scorer (4th in the class in pts/TSA), Smith looks to solidify himself as the second best player from this class.

Summary: Kiki remains the clear cut number one for me. He's crazy efficient and leads the class in pts/TSA by a significant 0.033 margin and rebounds incredibly well from the shooting guard position, even with Sharrar and Maye - both stud rebounders at their respective positions - also cleaning the glass for the Cougars. His poor defense can easily be ignored when you consider the efficiency, rebounding, and impressive lack of turnovers.

Summary: I'm not sure Gminski has a place on a good team due to his high turnovers and low rebounds. Defense is average and scoring is solid. I retain some hope that his turnovers aren't this awful based on his initial build, but that faith is beginning to fade.

Summary: Efficiency drops once again for Matthews, who has dropped from about 1.24 at the first update to 1.18 at the second and now 1.15, which puts him 6th in the class as of today. His scoring has held up long enough that he's probably an above average point guard in the league with another +20 in his handling.

Summary: Remains the best defender in the class and one of the best defenders in the league as well as a great rebounder, but probably only a desirable piece for about 1/3 of GMs due to the terrible offensive output and bad turnovers, which are a black mark for a guy who shouldn't have much usage.

Summary: Just about everything has dropped ever so slightly for Mahorn since the last update, so he drops ever so slightly in the rankings from 4 to 6. Elite rebounding and turnovers, but he falls just below Bouie due to the significant difference in efficiency.

Summary: Roosevelt has surprisingly improved since the Sonics shifted to an outside offense. Fifth in the class in pts/tsa, decent rebounding, average turnovers, and slightly below average defense. Not really a major liability anywhere.

Summary: I don't think McHale is the best player on a contender, but he's a solid second or third piece. Above average efficiency and rebounding, average defense, bad turnovers.

Summary: There's a pretty big difference between Brooks at 3 and the guys at 1 and 2. He's an excellent rebounder, but everything else is average (efficiency) or worse (defense, turnovers). I didn't expect Brooks to be the worse of the Nets' two first-round rookies, but that looks like it may be the case. He should probably be lower than this honestly, but it's a pretty weak class.

Summary: Huge surprise as I didn't expect to see Kiki dethroned at any point, but he's had a rough few sims that have seen his pts/tsa drop while Larry has continued to excel. He currently has the best efficiency in the class and is right up there as the best rebounder with Rickey Brown and Rick Mahorn. I think Kiki will move back into this spot at the end of the season, but Smith looks great.
